Nice jacket, well made, light weight and warm for use in car, shopping, skeet shooting in Minnesota.
Only negative is size runs smaller than several other Bean's jackets/coats that I have. XL is similar in size to other Large coats I have.

I think that the 850 is a great coat. It looks good and is warm. The best part is that it is so lightweight! I would give it five stars but I haven't had a chance to test it in zero weather yet.
The size does run a little small.

It's a great jacket - light, bright, warm - everything it should be.
BUT when I bought it, I thgouht it had a hood or a hood zipped into the collar and it does not.
And on a bright day, the black down shows through the red, making it look speckled or stained. But I am going to keep it.

This coat is so lightweight that i wasn't holding out much hope for it being warm, but I have been more than pleasantly surprised by how it has performed...so far. The only reason for the "so far" caveat (and the 4-stars) is that I havent had an opportunity yet to put it to a sub-zero test...18 is as cold as I have tested the coat at, and it gets 5-stars at that temp. Great protection from the wind, as well.

My son loves this jacket. Hasn't worn it yet in super cold weather, but he thinks it will be warm enough for below freezing temps. Further, he is 6'5" and the back and sleeve length are great.

Greet looking, fits great, the video shows a guy hiking in snow stating how warm it is, well he must be hiking in 70 degree weather with the sun on him wearing thermal underwear. TRUST ME IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A JACTET TO KEEP YOU WARM OUTSIDE THIS IS NOT THE JACKET FOR YOU AND I LIVE IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA .I STILL WILL WEAR MY DARK BLUE WITH THE RED BECAUSE IT LOOKS AND FELLS GOOD ON, THANK YOU.

This 850 down jacket compared with a similiar version purchased several yrs ago ,lacks the density ,loft ,insulating qualifies of the earlier jacket. By labeling it Ultralight it now has the consistency of a 600 down weight and raising the price has made it less of a bargain with diminished quality of the jacket .I haven't tested it in sub freezing weather but with its flimsy "hand"I don't expect any pleasant surprises

jacket is quite warm overall but makes for a great inner layer under a goretex outside layer. Wish the outer material could take more of a beating but understand that this an ULTRALIGHT jacket. This is my 3rd one I have owned and saving it for best right now but still wearing the older one. Old one has a few duct tape patches but still works well to keep me warm.

This is basically the perfectly weighted jacket for most conditions. I'm replacing the older model which lasted about 7 years. It's very comfortable, light and warm. I've worn the older model in temps from about 20 - 50 degrees. It really seems to work with your body to handle any temps in that range. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, is that I'm not thrilled about the red zipper on the navy blue jacket, but that's what it comes with in this color way. But performance-wise, it's the perfect jacket!

Fit was good and true to size but color was not as shown and disliked the cuff elastics that are no where as good as other manufacturers and are loose and let the air up the sleeves. Otherwise I would have rated higher. Pit zips would have been a plus and an inner zip pocket as well.

Seems like a good jacket. I got it for a gift for my husband when it was on a really good sale. Which was the only way I would buy it. He will probably use it to walk the dogs, and to work. The color, however, is pretty ugly. And the trim color is really awful. I am not sure who thought these colors went together, but I can tell you, they do not! I actually told him to send it back, but because of the price, he decided to keep it. It is well made, and fits him very well. But the color combo, holy cow. Though I do see a lot of LLBean clothes with color combinations that are really terrible. Nice looking until you see the trim colors. Not sure what the designers are thinking many times............

Bought for the upcoming Michigan winter but was a little disappointed when putting it on, the down insulation seems very thin especially in the shoulders, and I mean very thin; initial impression? Could have been more generous with the down, have my doubts about it's warmth on frigid days unless layered with something warm underneath ; initial thoughts on the construction is very high quality and well made.

It would help if there was a way of shortening the sleeves

My "L" Ultralight 850 is an excellent fit and flexible, even when wearing a midweight fleece layer. The pocket are spacious and the elastic cuffs work well. However, I found the jacket's windproofing disappointing and expected it to be warmer in sub-freezing temperatures. As a result, I'll use it as a Fall jacket and add a quality shell over it in Winter.

It's a little bit too big for a size "S". Nice color, nice overall feel.
They should offer size XS.

Excellent quality of jacket, but size down!! We measured for a perfect fit according to LLbeans size chart to be size medium in a tall (6'1"/165lbs) and it was HUGE. Too big even with a t-shirt and fleece jacket underneath. Not sure what LLbean is thinking with the sizes, but ended up with a regular small. It's a little short, but it will work. My wife had the same sizing problem with this jacket in women's too.

Light enough to wear under a winter jacket. Effective insulation. Seems well made, but of course only time will tell. The zipper looks especially rugged. An inside zippered breast pocket would have been a nice addition, and isn't too much to ask for in a $200 jacket.

Light and comfortable though not as warm as my LlBean leather bomber jacket with the fleece lining.

I would recommend the jacket to a friend. It fits well - size large, tall. I'm 6'4"tall and weigh around 180 lbs. It keeps me warm on a normal winter day (20-40) and when the temperature drops to near zero I'm comfortable with a fleece vest underneath,
I had one just like this that was torn in an accident. The replacement is still a nice jacket but I liked the old one better. It had two zipped hand pockets outside, a zippered inner pocket on the left and an open pouch inside on the right. The new jacket has just an open, unzipped pocket inside on the left and two zipped outside hand pockets. Both have a zippered chest pocket on the upper left but the new jacket lacks the passthrough for an earphone cord. I assume these changes make it less expensive to manufacture since the price hasn't changed in several years.

Jacket is rather tight. Got 2XLT but feels like XL. Otherwise kept me warm at -10F.
