Very warm and light. I like the comfort and the versatility of this garment

Nice lightweight jacket, feels warm but almost too light, feels a bit flimsy, need more time to assess durability

I have an older version of the 850 which is a great jacket so I ordered a new one.
I miss the fleece lined outer pockets and the fleece collar and the inside zippered pocket.
I ordered the same size as before, the jacket by design is more fitted and the arm holes are tighter. It is still my go to jacket even though I am not able to layer.
I live in the NW where there are lots of great brands to compare and I think the LL Bean 850 down is the best all around jacket.

Weather hasn't been below 30 since I got the coat so hard to tell just how warm it will be. But it's well made with quality zippers and cuts the wind well. Fit is true to size. The one thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is the pockets are not lined.

I purchased a 850 jacket in 2011 and it is much thicker than my new one. Like my 2011 jacket much better.

I appreciate the warmth and light weight of this jacket but note that the fabric is a bit fragile. It tears rather easily so any rough treatment is out. I normally wear a large in Bean size but had to reorder an X large in this particular style as Large was a bit small. The X large is a bit too large but wearable.

Attractive, well made, but not as warm as I had hoped. I'm sure if you're skiing the expert slopes while wearing this jacket it's plenty warm. However , standing still on a windy train platform in the Northeast in January this jacket doesn't cut it.

I bought this jacket wanting it to be red..instead it is closer to orange despite the description describing it as red?? Otherwise, a nice and warm jacket.

It's warm but a little big. If I thought it was going to be that big I would have gotten a large size.

This jacket does an excellent job of cutting the wind, nearly impervious to it. I am 5' 9" and 157 lbs. Medium fit me well with room for a vest as well. I do wish it had a bit more insulation though. Some other reviewers have commented on it looking stained due to down being able to be seen thru the shell. This is absolutely true for the red color, the shell should have been a bit more substantial. Now a comment regarding LL Beans shipping method. This jacket arrived in a plastic bag! Really! A $250 jacket mailed in a bag to be abused by 30+ lb boxes smashing it through out the mailing process. I expect better from LL Bean.

Its an improvement that its more water resistant .but do we really need a large logo on the back as well as the front of the jacket.

Seems fine for warmth, but temps not very cold yet. Sleeves very long for a 5'8" male. Had to get them shortened 2" which is annoying!

Overall is OK. Not quite the quality I'd expect from Bean for the price.

Good length, well constructed jacket. It is a bit on the pricey side, but we expect the jacket to last a long time. It's another LLBean classic!

Extremely light weight and comfortable. Not sure how well it keep you warm? It's not for ultra or even semi ultra cold weather

First some background. I bought a Ultralight 850 hoodie (1" baffle) in 2017. I never considered it a very warm jacket and LL Bean apparently agreed with me as they added 15% more down in 2018. With only a t-shirt on I feel the cold once the temperature is into the 50s for low activity wear. (I'm a desert dweller so I don't handle cold very well.) In 2019 I bought the matching vest and considered it as warm as the jacket due to the additional down that was added in 2018.
Now this jacket stays warm in low activity and only a t-shirt down into the 30s and is very comfortable in the 40s which makes it a good 10-15 degree warmer than my older ultralight. This does make it a bit warm for the 60s though.
I'm on the borderline between a Large Tall and a X-Large Regular but since I'm getting heavier in my old age I went with the XL Regular. The Fit is comfortable with enough extra to allow layering without getting tight. Having dual adjustment on the
The drawcord hem has two adjustment points which makes it easier to get to adjust than with a single point.
My older jacket stuff pocket is on the inside of the jacket were this one uses the left hand pocket. Since the stuff pocket zipper is a double sided this results in a second tab on the left hand. It hasn't been a issue but it is a difference. Would probably be more of an issue if the pockets zipped down to close.
So why only 4 stars. I consider the fact that the hand pockets zip closed from bottom to top to be a bad design. This design prevents you from using the pockets partially closed to reduce heat loss around your wrists. In fairness a lot of brands use the same design though.

Good quality, warm, looks good. However, they run small. All my LL Bean shirts are medium with plenty of room. A medium in this jacket means I can barely zip it at the waist.

I purchased a new Ultralight 850 jacket to replace on old 850 that got ripped. The new 850 is manufactured a little differently and I'm not sure it's quite as good as the old one. The baffles seem bigger, maybe not as warm? Also I was disappointed to see the jacket no longer has an inner pocket to self store the jacket in for packing to travel etc, a good feature that is now left out....

Nice jacket, well made, light weight and warm for use in car, shopping, skeet shooting in Minnesota.
Only negative is size runs smaller than several other Bean's jackets/coats that I have. XL is similar in size to other Large coats I have.

I think that the 850 is a great coat. It looks good and is warm. The best part is that it is so lightweight! I would give it five stars but I haven't had a chance to test it in zero weather yet.
The size does run a little small.

It's a great jacket - light, bright, warm - everything it should be.
BUT when I bought it, I thgouht it had a hood or a hood zipped into the collar and it does not.
And on a bright day, the black down shows through the red, making it look speckled or stained. But I am going to keep it.

This coat is so lightweight that i wasn't holding out much hope for it being warm, but I have been more than pleasantly surprised by how it has performed...so far. The only reason for the "so far" caveat (and the 4-stars) is that I havent had an opportunity yet to put it to a sub-zero test...18 is as cold as I have tested the coat at, and it gets 5-stars at that temp. Great protection from the wind, as well.
