I have owned 3 pairs of the Salomon Quest Goretex hiking boot. The first 2 pairs developed leaks around the join of the footbed after 2 years. My current third pair has started to leak and today the whole sole has come completely apart. I really like the fit and comfort of these boots but am now very concerned about the reviews I am reading of the latest Quest 4 version and need to break them in and uncomfortable around the heel area. I wish these boots did not always start to leak and separate around the joins after 1-2 years moderate use.

After having gone through three pairs of the Quest 3 and many other Salomon shoes over the last two decades, I was really hopeful for the new shoe but it has been disappointing both in durability and comfort. These required a break-in time in the heel area for me which resulted in some significant hot spots and blisters. I did not need any break in time with the Quest 3. I've already broken one of the plastic lace holders eyelets. The toebox is starting to peel (which happened on the Quest 3 but not as soon as it has with the 4). Sadly, this will be my last pair of Salomon Quest boots after having quite a long run with them. Primary use is on and off trail search and rescue in southern Arizona.

These dont stay dry in snow or in rain. Like all of my four pots of Salomon boots theyre comfortable on trail. These breathe pretty well despite staying fairly warm down to 30F not moving or 15F if Im moving. But since I live in California in a wet winter environment, it really limits the use that it wont even stay dry for 15 minutes of rain. Disappointed

Had these for close to a year. I find them mostly comfortable but the cushioning seems to push my foot forward and squish my toes against the toe of the boot, I've seen others having sizing issues so it my be that. I found them to be pretty water proof when I was hosing the blood off, but I have not done more than that or walk through puddles. The grip is not great. I have not used them to the fullest extent as advertised as I have been less active lately but they seem to be doin pretty good for one of my daily shoes. Still probably better options for the price.

I've been a religious wearer of the Solomon Quest 4 GTX for the past 4 years since first discovering them. I've hiked hundreds of mountains in the Northeastern US, and usually go through a pair of these every 18 months or so. I'm on my 3rd pair in the past few years, and have had nothing but good things to say about them through the hundreds of mountains they've helped me climb. Something however changed with this most recent generation of boot. I purchased my most recent pair (newest gen) in the spring of 2022 from REI, and instantly noticed out on the trail that they were very prone to slipping. At first, I thought that maybe it was a break-in issue with the newly redesigned generation, so gave it some time. In the first half of the summer I spent most of my time hiking the VT Long Trail and so had a good mix of dirt & rock to hike on - so slipping wasn't as big of a concern. As I transitioned back to the White Mountains of NH with their much rockier terrain, my confidence in the boots decreased significantly. At that point, with over 150 miles on them, they were well broken in, yet I had frequent slips when crossing rocks (even when not wet). Again, having wore several prior generations of this model for well over 1,000 miles and a couple hundred mountains ascended, I never had slipping problems. This leads me to believe that there was some change in the Contragrip rubber and how its manufactured with the new model. The grip is nowhere near as good as it used to be, and is very slick. After multiple slips and falls, I finally returned my boots to REI due to safety concerns with their continued use. I really hope that Solomon pays attention to this feedback, as other wearers have also noted the poor grip with these soles on the latest model. I LOVE the comfort and support of this boot, so hope that with the next generation, Solomon will improve the grip performance of the soles or move to a different type of rubber. I don't want to have to switch to a different brand, but will if there is no other option.

I've had two pairs of these boots and there is no way they should get 5 star ratings unless you figure in a two to three year lifespan before they start falling apart. Guys, just wait till the honeymoon is over before you start throwing five star ratings on these boots. When they are new, they are the most comfortable and rugged feeling boot I've even owned, I swore by them. I thought that for the price they would last forever and I liked them so much that I bought a second pair when the first one started self destructing. Well, same thing with the second pair, I got 2-3 yrs before they looked like they went through WW2. I live in SW Utah, desert climate so the waterproofing wasn't an issue, just the seams and soles separating. I'm in my 60's and retired and I'm a fitness hiker, not climbing mountains and such. If money wasn't an issue I'd just buy a new pair every 2 yrs and be a happy hiker but I'll try another brand next time. I've heard that this is one of the boots that the Navy Seals use, I believe it because they are so darn comfortable!

Bought these for September elk hunting in Colorado. First time these saw wet weather was walking through wet grass for maybe 1-2 miles with some light rain while wearing tall gaiters. Both boots leaked badly and my feet got soaked. Like most synthetic/leather boots I expected them to develop leaks after a year or two of use but not when they were brand new.

My experience has been similar to the others regarding waterproofness and separation of the toe rubber left boot, left side. The Gore-tex doesn't seem to work; no surprise there.

I bought the Quest 4 on recommendation from friends I hike with. The 2 year warranty gave me confidence that the boots would be durable. I use the boots for fell walking and some scrambling. The boots were extremely comfortable straight away and performed very well. I have owned the boots for 4 months now and used them on 10 hikes about 10 miles each time. However on my last hike I noticed water getting into the left boot. On inspection I found a split in the contagrip outsole. This was oy 2 miles into a 10 mile hike so I had to carry on in the damaged boot.

This is my 3rd Salmon boot , so I know exactly what expect as far as the comfort and the features which enables me to backpack unfriendly terrain.
That's why I was surprised that after only 3 mild backpacking trips (3-4night) the boot is starting break. My last Salmon GTX pair had taken so much abuse and lasted 5 years with numerous backpacking trips, but those one 3 backpacking trip and I am staring to send the end

Happy Quest 4D 3 owner here. I have exceptionally tough feet to fit (10.5 A/B and 9.5+ B with an 11 arch) and require sturdy boots for solo backpacks in off trail rugged alpine terrain. Failure of boots in the field is a safety issue. The Quest 4D 3 was the only boot that did not have significant heel lift on the smaller foot even with size 11 to ensure proper forefoot flex. Narrow enough not to be swimming but still required 2 heavy socks on the smaller foot. After 2 years and 300 miles, the boots are near their end.
They were good in most conditions EXCEPT wet rock. Having to cross a boulder field and down steep slabs caused several slips. Rarely had those with various Vibram soles. Many have had similar experiences with Contagrip so it is not isolated. Even so, I was willing to look at Quest 4 due to the comfortable fit. But, it's clear from the reviews that quality has declined.
Salomon has been known for quality for decades. That is now in question. One only has to read through reviews of current offerings. Some claim that the critical review expect too much or are using the product in a manner it was not intended. From Salomon's own description of the Quest 4: "Designed for long expeditions and tough conditions, the QUEST is grippy and supportive."
The last thing most people want is failure in the field. Warranties don't save a long planned trip.

I was going to try these out but I'm seeing a lot of the same reviewed issues as the xultra4 and speedX5. The REdesign being a poor design. Shoe is longer than previous generation. Uncomfortable. Painful. ill fitting. I can live with the short lived usage as the other reviewers seem to use their footwear a lot more frequently but I can't get around the poor fitting/redesign. At least the previous generations of my favorite shows are still being produced and sold.

These are just too narrow. Much less comfortable than my 2015 pair. Not enough space in the toe box. The midfoot is tight on me and I am female, so usually my feet are on the narrow side of a men's size 10.5. If you are looking to replace an old pair I would not assume they will fit the same.

Boots are comfortable but undoing the laces on the last hook is a battle. I would not recommend the boots. It is sad how LLBean quality has gone down for the price you pay.

I like these boots but if you think you're getting a like for like replacement for your Quest 3D's then think again.
The Quest 4D is significantly less robust than the outgoing model and, as mentioned by others, the sole is much thinner. This is fine on easy ground but push them a little across more rocky terrain and you're going to feel it. Any distance above 10 miles and these boots are noticeably more fatiguing.
The 4D also loses the plastic heel cup which added a great deal of stability to the 3D and made uneven ground a breeze.
There is more room in the forefoot which is great on downhill sections.
The materials are lighter than the 3D and seem less robust and in addition the tongue isn't very well shaped leading to it bunching up.
Fear not though...! Salomon have released a Quest 4D advanced which appears to be a refresh of the (better in my opinion) Quest 3D design for only a 20% hike in price (see what I did there...).
In conclusion I'd buy the advanced if you don't want a downgrade but wait until black Friday or you get a voucher...

I bought my first pair a little over 6 years ago and they held up very well, the perfect boot. 5 stars comfort, zero blisters out of the box on a 12 mile same day ridge hike. 5 stars traction, never slipped off anything. Plenty warm, wear through interior Alaska winters, never have cold feet (one half size up!) Lasted a few years.
They changed the formula when I eventually got a replacement, and Now it's 1/5 stars for durability. I've gone through 6 pairs and they are falling apart within 3 months. Why 6 pairs? Because they have a very good warranty policy so I just keep getting a free replacement. My latest was the 2021 update and a month in, it's about at the same point.
So would I recommend it? Yes, it does what it says it does very well, just not for long. So buy from a place that has a solid return policy and enjoy amazing boots.

I bought these boots at the beginning of June, and have been using them on and off since then. They are very comfortable and my feet don't feel like they get hot in them. They are definitely lighter than my other pair of boots. I bought them because they claimed to be waterproof, but one step through ankle deep, at most, water soaked the interior of the boot and since then I haven't touched them for almost two weeks, and have been looking into another boot that might do a better job.

These boots have fantastic support. I have only worn them twice, so I cannot provide a full review. Unfortunately my right boot seems to be lower in the forefoot on the right boot, which is pressing down on my foot. This could be just a problem with the manufacture on my boots. The bottom line. If you're looking for a very supportive boot, look no further. If you need a boot for long treks with more cushioning, then these might not be for you.
