I bought 1.5 Timps almost two years ago and did a fair amount of trail running in Portland, OR. I stumbled across the brand at Next Adventure in town ... and liked the wide toe box as my Saucony's were killing my right front toe area. The 1.5's worked great ... though they did stretch out a fair amount after a good few months - which was fine but they did get loose. My brother bought the 2.0's this fall in Tahoe ... and my old ones were worn out and I was thinking about a new pair. Started doing research the past week and read all the reviews about too narrow ... though they're on sale and local retails. Went today to try on .... yes, narrower than the 1.5's but .... I like 'em. They fit a bit more snug but I'm fine with that as the other got too loose. I think as the next few weeks go by they'll loosen a bit and be totally groovy. And I like the sole pattern better on these than the 1.5's. My two cents.

I loved these shoes. Just the right amount of stack height and excellent support, plenty of room for my fat toes. Really I have short toes, so my forefoot has to fit up in the 'toe box' and these shoes fit great. I usually size up a full size in other brands from my measured foot length, in these I only had to go up a half. I have read comments that others think there is less room in these, but I think the width is the same, but there may be decreased volume. Wasn't an issue for me. I really didn't have any issues comfort wise on runs less than 100 miles, I did have some bruising on a 100 mile race on the edges of my feet, but I don't really fault the shoes. My biggest complaint is that the uppers started to separate from the soles at 350 miles, but with ALTRA's awesome warranty and customer service they are replacing them with a new pair. So if I get 700 miles total out of one purchase I am a very happy customer as that would be 200 miles more than I normally get. Not every product lasts or performs as expected, but when a company stands by the product and does right by the customer that earns my repeat business. Thank you Altra!

Like MANY others have noted, these felt very tight over the forefoot and stiff in the mid foot straight out of the box. All my other Altras (Torin, Torin knit, Timp 1, 2 pairs of Timp 1.5, and Paradigm 5) were perfect straight out of the box. So when these felt tight and stiff I was worried. But I wanted to love them given my history with Altra so I wore them for a week. They are perfect now. In fact, they may be my favorite Altras yet. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 star was the stiffness at the beginning. I wonder how many of these negative reviews the Timp 2 has received would have been better if the wearers had given some time to break them in.

Almost too narrow, snug, but good. Only one run, but they were excellent. Much better than the old Timps that felt a sloppy in the same size. Cushion and grip was great on wet rocky terrain. Looks like an Altra comeback.

Really really tight just below where I skipped a lace hole. I'm an 11 and these are 12s. Definitely not as roomy as the lone peak 4.5s I returned because they fell apart. I gave 4 stars for now... going on a short day hike this weekend and will update then.

Will you ever fix the problem with tearing on the sides of Timps? I've ran 40-70mpw in multiple versions of the timp for years and they have all torn on the sides after ~400 miles of use. Once they tear my biomechanics get thrown off until I replace the shoes. I am looking at buying other shoes, because of this problem.

I like this shoe for trails. I have road run in them and they work fine too. But hiking/backpacking (in dry conditions) with a light pack was quite comfortable too. For hiking/backpacking the cushioning, snug fit and tread worked well for me. I have not used them in the rain yet. Also the shoe is snug and maybe narrow, but they feel good on slim/skinny feet. The only other altra shoe I've used is the Duo and have not tried the Olympus yet.

I just finished my third run with new Timp 2.0s and have no complaints. I typically wear a 12 and got these in a 12.5 which fit just right. I did not find the toe box too narrow from side to side. Vertically, there could be a little more room but I didn't experience any rubbing or blisters. I have normal width feet so maybe people with wider feet would have more of a problem. I liked the little gravel guard on the rear of the sole of the last model so I hope they put that back in. Got a few pieces thrown into my ankle area during the runs.

They fit good and almost as good of a shoe as the timp 1, but not quite as good a shoe as the timp 1. Wish they would remake the timp1, best shoe ever.
I'd also recommend:

Quite a nice shoe. However, the previous version had a more efficient lacing system, a slightly roomier fit, and better feeling cushioning. To me, those things made that version a 5-star shoe, and put this one at 4 stars. Altra, please bring back the strengths of the previous version!

I loved the 1.5. Used them on the Tahoe rim trail and half of the Colorado trail before they blew out. Super comfortable but I was not a fan of the treading. The exposed foam parts after many miles became very uncomfortable as I could feel every single rock and pebble under my foot. About halfway through the CT I picked up a pair of the timp 2's and really saw a difference. For one, I had to go up a whole size (1.5's I went up a half size) and probably could have gone a whole size and a half up. This shoe is also a lot more narrow than the 1.5, especially the toe box. Besides that I thought this shoe was great. I got about 250 miles on them by the end of the CT and they are still holding up great. No holes or tears. And even though there is no rock plate the updated treading with no exposed foam areas made this shoe very comfortable and I didn't really notice the rocks under my feet. I did slip and slide a bit during the rain in fresh mud but I think that's with any shoe. Overall I loved this shoe and plan on getting another pair after this pair.

This shoe has been such an improvement over the sloppy first 2 versions. Sloppy for my foot....Tread / traction greatly improved over the first 2 versions... Actually the best feeling shoe I have ever run in. There is 1 problem that didnt get fixed from the first 2 versions. the upper still separates from the lower. All 4 pair of my Timp 2s failed in the same spots and all around similar mileage. 225-250 miles. Fix that upper, and this shoe will be 5 stars in my book

I use this shoe on technical mtn trails. Few quick thoughts. 1. This shoe is slicker than the timp 1.5. You have to really watch your step on rocks with any moisture. 2. I would recommend getting a half size up from the timp 1.5 due to this shoe being narrower and that half size up gives you the space your use to in the 1.5. 3. Overall I like the lightweight, sturdy feel on the trail. I would recommend this one.

I trail run in these weekly around 12-20 miles per week and these shoes work very well for that need. When I was deciding whether to purchase these shoes I read quite a few reviews that said the toe box was too small. I do agree that the toe box is a little shy in width and could have a bit more vertical room as well, but I have much more room than comparable shoes from other brands with the added benefit of zero drop and cushion. I know this much cushion is not a true barefoot shoe, but when our ancestors were running around barefoot, they didn't have to contend with miles of pavement. This is something I do contend with when I travel and there are no trails nearby, so the cushioning is much appreciated Altra! If you are on the fence, this is a great all around shoe and will keep you from having to by 2 different pairs of shoes, one for trail and one for pavement. Altra, please don't continue your move to mainstream shoe sizes. You are one of the few manufacturers that create natural foot shaped shoes with zero drop and enough cushion to eat pavement. Thank you!

I purchased the Timp 2 with hesitation. After reading the characteristics of the shoe I felt it might work well for my foot, but reading the reviews made me hesitate a few months before I purchased a pair. The reviews, even the negative ones, are spot on. The shoe is definitely more narrow throughout the entire shoe, front to back. However, this worked to my advantage. I had previously worn a pair of Lone Peak 4. That shoe has a spacious toe box, and is a bit more wide. This made the shoe sloppy on m foot. I had decided if I got another pair I would go a half size down, but I saw the Timp 2 was a bit more narrow, so I went for it. This shoe is great. It fits perfectly.

Feels a hair bigger for size (I also have new Torin). This shoe gets more comfortable for me with use. Tread is excellent for dirt road/trail. I have a little trail system I run /walk and also hit roads too.....Comfortable on both.... The torin is not (for example). Can feel the gravel on torin tread. I am going to buy another pair of Torin because I carry a 25-35 lb pack at times and want to just keep one pair for running without pack. Another great Altra shoe that when I get home from a run/walk I find I am wearing around house because so comfortable.

Very comfy, very grippy, but a wee bit too narrow. The laces should be 4" longer to compensate.

I saw that this shoe got a lot of negative reviews about the narrower mid foot and slick bottom. My two cents for what it is worth... This shoe and the Superior 4 are the best versions of trail shoes that Altra has put out. The LPs are too sloppy and my feet slide around in them - I can't lock them down. The slightly more narrow mid foot of these makes them feel race ready for almost any terrain. I say almost any because, yes, they are slick on wet rocks but so is every other Altra I've worn that doesn't have Vibram outsoles. The Quantic midsole is my favorite that Altra has put out in a road or trail shoe (although I did love the One 2.5 midsole material and original Escalante Ego material). It feels fast enough for a race yet cush enough for a long run. I don't know if I will use LPs any longer - please don't change this model Altra. Don't read the negatives that people wrote! Those people should get LPs if they don't like this model. They probably also wouldn't like the fit of the Superior.

1st Thoughts ...........Outsole is much more stiff than Timp 1.5, and the overlay at the bottom of the tongue /laces is really rigid. It did not cause any pain to the top of my foot, while walking around, however it made me worried for running. I wore them around work / house for a 1 week, before taking them out on the trails.
After a few 2 hr trail runs...... I'm comfortable saying this shoe is definitely going to be another buy for me. Provided you are ok with less volume than the Timp 1.5, which for me, was a little too much volume, and a little too mushy.
The Timp 2 gives a firmer feel and is dialed in for performance and better energy return. I'm more confident with traction in wet conditions and foot placement on technical trails.
Suggested Improvements...........More flexible overlay material around the tongue / laces. Had a small area of outsole catch on a root, and start to peel. Applied some gorilla glue and all will probably be ok, but just something I'll keep a watch on.

so far I've put about 20 miles on the shoe. it been pretty good shoe so far, responsive, and grip is amazing on all terrain (traill, grass, and road). I did have to get a half size larger in shoe size.

This is a great shoe for the masses...you can tell that Altra is now designing shoes for a wider (or not so wide) audience. This shoe is sleeker, slimmer, and shallowerer than any model I've tried from Altra. But, as someone who has been switching from speedgoats to Nike terra kigers, this still feels substantially wider. I can see how this could bother some Altra diehards who seem to only be comfortable in the widest of forefoot, but these are still a very wide shoe compared to ever other top competitor. The midsole is holding up well after 50ish miles of hard AZ mountain running and the outsole is aces in the dry rock desert landscape. The only reason why I shied away from 5 stars is the lack of rock plate or additional protection. But that's more of a personal suggestion for the type of running I do. These have been a pleasure to run in and the ASU colorway has really made a splash down here in Phoenix. Hoping these hold up well, see you on the trails!

This is one of those shoe updates that was completely necessary. I have the 1.5's and didn't love or hate them. They were just so sloppy in the mid-foot that they were almost dangerous on technical trails. Very glad to report that Altra has fixed that issue. Honestly without other reviews I probably wouldn't have tried the Timp line again but since the upper and fit was improved I felt it was worth an attempt since they check off so many of my needs. After my first run I am very happy with them. Fit is dialed in, although I had to return my normal size in favor of a half size up. **I would highly recommend doing so especially if these are being used for longer runs and races unless you enjoy losing your toe nails. For that I had to removed a star but otherwise they are a fantastic shoe in the correct size. Not excessive on the tread which makes them great for almost all surfaces and I can't wait to get them on my feet again for more trial miles. Thank god that rudder is gone too, they feel much more like an extension of my foot now which is all I could ever ask for. Hopefully they will maintain durability and the midsole doesn't flatten prematurely like the Torin's seem to do, that's my only worry.

Firstly, as always, Altra shoes fit a full size off for me. I usually wear a 10.5, but in Altra shoes I wear an 11.5. That said, I'm happy with this shoe overall. I was leery about purchasing when I read all the reviews about the shoe being too narrow, but this fits me the same as every other Altra shoe I've owned (10+ pairs of different models now). The shoe fits a bit lower on my heel than I am used to, but it still holds my foot well with no slippage. My only complaint about this shoe, is that being a trail shoe, I wish it had a bit more cushion than it does. Comparing it to my Lone Peaks, it feels like it's more minimal and firm. Like I said though, I am happy with this one overall. They will become my new go-to for trail running.
