Generally I like the shoe. I have a different model of Hokas and the width fit is different. I do have a bit of a wide foot and should have opted for a wider size than the standard “D” but hoping they will break in to something more tolerable.

This was my third pair. Previous ones were in the laid back grey color. The run narrow so I have been buying wide. No break in needed. They are the ultimate for fast trail walking and running. You feel as sure footed as a goat. This colorful pair was different somehow. Maybe a different kind of fabric? I got hot spots immediately and had to return them. I will wear my old grey ones a while longer.

Recently upgraded to these from Altra Lonepeak 4.5s for 10-15 mile trailruns and don't regret it a bit.

Only reason for the 4 star review is because one of the laces was bad. Called customer service and they wanted me to ship the shoe backs or buy new laces. I decided to just live with it. Shoes are awesome though and I will purchase again.

Nice trail runner. A bit more narrow for the size using same size Clifton as comparator.

Pros:
*Tread is not too extreme, yet gives plenty of traction to a wide variety of surfaces.
*Cushioning is excellent for longer miles and avoiding joint problems.
*Cushioning on the front of the foot is reduced and I think it allows for increased footwork for technical terrain.
Cons:
*You have to find a color scheme that works for you. Many are... strange.
*The material covering the top of the toe box is resistant to stretch and takes some getting used to. For runners looking for a wider toe-box that allows for toes to spread out, look elsewhere. Having said that, it's always a trade-off between the room for toes and the ability to run on technical trails.

It took 3 tries. Speedgoat mid GTX (way too hard to just get them on & narrow)), Speedgoat 4 GTX ( still too narrow), Speedgoat 4 WIDE ! Nice fit, nice shoe, the only downside is they don't come in GTX (gore-tex). I'm glad to have a trail Hoka that has a Vibram soles. The Stinson's are my favorite, but wearing out the soles on a $150+ shoe in 6 months just sucks! Fingers crossed the Speedgoats will last a year !

This is my 2nd pair of the Hoka Speedgoats wide. So my review will be based off the first pair.
Pros: The shoes broke down/wore out slowly but yet remained nearly the same in comfort, stability and responsiveness from the first mile to nearly 450 miles! Break-in period was about 25 miles which is to be expected and understood. The control from the grib of the shoes on uphills or downhills was great! No foot slide inside the shoes at all! A can't go wrong purchase!
Cons: The internal heel wore out around mile 400, if you can consider that a bad thing! With the higher platform I experienced more ankle rollovers than normal.

I really like how these fit and feel. I moved to these from Altra Paradigm looking for more traction -- which I got in spades. The gait and modest drop also seem more natural. Tried these and Challenger, both in wides. I can feel more "cush" in the SG than the Challenger, and the SG's are stiffer/more supportive -- both things I was looking for. But...I have wide feet and the SG forefoot is still not quite right. Shoe comes to a point more than the rounder profile of the Challenger, so wide is just barely wide enough. AND...most importantly, plastic-y overlay on forefoot interferes with the natural fold of the shoe. As a result, forefoot folds down onto little toe, causing pain. I'm taking advantage of tryout period to see if this will resolve, but why, oh why did Hoka add this stupid overlay in the first place?

The only negative I have about these shoes, is the same that I have for a lot of the more recent Hoka products, and that is that I have to order a wide because their toe boxes seem to be getting more and more narrow and shallow.
Having said that, everything else is great. The shoe has great comfort, but is a bit more responsive than some of the other "squishy" models. The tread is great. I recently ran 41 miles is them on some pretty rough terrain in Bandera. They held up great, and I would definitely select them again for this course, and most others.

To run in these are AMAZING. Grip, comfort, that's all there is. I love the Orange color to.... ONE thing though : I know there is a Gore-Tex version, but, for any trail shoe one would expect them to be a little more waterproof than these are. Even a drop of water and your feet are soaked. Seriously, they are like wearing tissues on your feet. Very comfy tissues. Tissues that are such amazing, coomfortable shoes that when it's not raining you forget, totally, that they are tissues.

For longer training runs and races I really love this shoe however, if there could be a version with a wider toe box I would totally welcome it. In the longer miles I get pressure points and blisters between my pinky and next toe!

I wear both SPG 4 and the Altra Lone Peak 4.5. The SPG 4 has a ton of cushioning which is a blessing and curse. The extra cushioning lacks the stability one might need on technical trails. I find the Lone Peak, being built closer to the ground is superior in stability. I'm able to hike much further in the Lone Peak 4.5 without any nerve numbness in the forefoot. Not sure if it's because of the much wider toe box (allowing my toes to move freely) or the zero drop that allows me to hike pain free. SPG 4 is good for 4 miles before I feel pain. Doesn't mean this is a bad shoe, just doesn't fit my foot as well as the Altra LP 4.5.

I'm a trail runner in Marin. I like these shoes a lot, this is my 4th pair. They are really great on the trials. However, I do have an issue with the design of the heels. There is a "soft" bit in the middle surrounded by grip. Yesterday I was running and a stone pierced this area and punctured my heel. It was incredibly painful, but luckily not too bad an injury. It did make me question if I will continue using these shoes. Hopefully you might be able to modify the design to fix this flaw.
thank you.

The tongue is not as padded and comfortable as the Speedgoat 3’s that these shoes replaced, but other than that, they are very comfortable.

3 mile runs 3 to 4 times a week on moderately challenging trail. Vibram sole is awesome. A bit more cushion/padding in tongue would be nice.
