The Lone Peak has been my go-to trail shoe since the very first version. But now I need more cushioning, so I decided to give the Timp a try, and I'm glad I did. Very comfortable, and I like the bright color choices in version 5. Seems very lightweight, which I appreciate. The toe box is a bit smaller than I'm used to with the LP, both side to side and top to bottom. In fact, it reminds me of the toe box in the LP 7, which was smaller than any other version of LP that I've owned. Having said that, it didn't cause issues while I'm running, so it is not a deal breaker, but I hope Altra makes it a bit roomier in the next version of the Timp. The Vibram sole is great, but I think I would prefer if it covered the entire bottom of the shoe. I haven't put enough miles on these shoes yet to know whether this will be an issue, but based on past experiences with trail shoes, I don't think having the midsole material exposed on the bottom of the shoe is a good idea. I also wish the laces were a bit longer- using the extra eyelets to lock down the the shoe doesn't leave me enough lace to tie a double not. Hopefully this also gets fixed with the next version. I can't comment on durability yet, as I haven't put enough miles on them to test the durability. I will continue to use my Lone Peaks for hiking, as I like a little more ground feel when I'm carrying a pack, but the Timp is now my first choice for trail running.

Will start by saying I'm a big fan of these and find myself grabbing them for runs more often than not. I have hundreds of miles on them in the mountains. They are light, stable, and have great grip. They feel pretty agile on trail and inspire confidence on technical terrain to pick up the pace. Upper could be improved comfort wise, it is pretty rigid and stiff but does ok for me.. It has broken in some over time. Durability has been good but overlays started to delaminate very soon which has been disappointing. Think the shoe could be improved by incorporating some supercritical foam to the midsole for a little more response (nitrogen, etc.), more comfortable upper that doesn't delaminate, and increasing lug depth just a little. Please stick with the vibram, it's been awesome! I have to size up 1/2 in this shoe for thumbs width and they fit perfect. Would also love the option of a low drop (4-6mm) version of the Timp!

I wore two pairs of Timp 5s while thru hiking this year, and while mostly a good shoe they did have one problem. After about 400 miles the discontinuous outsole would cause the midsole to pack out asymmetrically. I pronate my feet slightly and the inside edge of the shoe compressed much quicker to the point that I had to replace them after 600-ish miles despite the rest of the shoe still being in good shape. The exposed foam also tended to entrain rocks after a while. With a full rubber outsole I think this would be the perfect shoe for me. I very much like the level of cushion and switched to the Timps from Lone Peaks due to some plantar fasciitis issues.

Long time Altra wearer, mainly Lone Peaks for hiking. I've been disappointed with the Lone Peak cushioning and durability since the LP 6s. The Timp 5's were my first venture outside of Lone Peak land. First, they fit a whole size too small from my LPs. I think this is because the Timps are very narrow (even more narrow than my Hokka Bondi 6 and way more narrow than the LP 8). At a whole size bigger, the narrowness goes away and the shoe is a joy...great cushioning and very grippy Vibram sole. We'll see how the laminate toebox holds up. If this shoe had an original Altra toe box (why is doesn't is a mystery) and better color options, it would be my go to hiking shoe for years to come.

I love the fit of the Lone Peak. These seem to be more narror and snug. The soles are super comfortable and grippy. When active, the snug fit can be beneficial, but for daily comfort I prefer the fit of the Lone Peak.

I wore the Timp 5 on the John Muir Trail and although the shoe came apart after 222 miles and 12 days of very demanding terrain, they did manage to get me home though. Im not completely dissapointed as 20 mile days can be hard on any shoe. I wanted a soft shoe that would flex under foot against the uneven terrain and provide stability and they did just that. They also carried the extra weight from my backpack well.

Great shoe but a bit narrow in the toe box for those with a wider foot. Grippy, comfortable, and stylish.

Have bought Altra for several years now because of the larger toe box which were great for my bunions. First couple of pairs were awesome. Last two pairs seem like the toe box has been shrinking.

After a few years trail running in the superior 5's I added this to my rotation (still using the superiors). Coming from a lower stack shoe, this feels cushiony but still responsive enough. I'm curious how long before the midsole starts to feel "flat" and loses its springy-ness. My only complaint is I find it hard to get a good heel lock. I've tried a runners loop, it seems to work if I really tighten the laces, but there seems to be a very small "sweet spot" between tight enough to secure my heel and not so tight that the laces are digging into the top of my feet.

Altra has made some great improvements over the Timp 4. Durable materials, incredible base soles, a more comfortable fit. QA issues exist, we received the wrong size in the labelled box, the inner soles are molded incorrectly. The rubber base lugs are soft but they are wearing out quickly with street use. For trail use the base soles will last longer.

Miles after miles go by with very few issues of discomfort. After a very brief, getting worn in, period the shoes work like a dream. A dream, because it feels like I'm running on clouds. Stick to the pavement and keep going. The soles reroute your step to center and bounce you right off. Distance and proper gait, with very little pain. I feel like I could run forever.

I purchased a pair in early August 2025 before a trip to Montana that included a few day hikes. They have been a daily shoe since. The soles are completely worn out 3 months later.

I love the altar brand. Is the only brand I use on my hiking adventures. They need to make a wider size. There are hot spots that form on the foot after about 10 miles of breaking the issue in and the wider size would've prevented that. Still the best shoe for hiking on the market.

Nice looking shoe, but narrower than all the other Altra shoes I’ve tried (Olympus, Lone Peak, Torin and Paradigm). Wish I knew that before wearing them, as now I can’t return them. Guess, I need to shop at REI for their return policy.

There are many things I loved about this shoe. The wide toe box, the stability they provide, and the grip I felt on the trail. However, there was one deal breaker that I could not get past. The problem is the edge of the durable toe protection at the front of the shoe. This dug into the top of my toes on trail decents no matter what I tried. And I tried many things, including tightening my laces, thicker socks, silicone toe caps under my sox, and adding a rock plate under the insoles to take up space. None of these solutions were able to help the pressure on the tops of my toes in decents. So unfortunately, I am unable to run trails in these shoes.

I was looking forward to these having Vibram soles and an upgrade to the 3 pair of Timp 4s I have. Sadly these fit much tighter in width and over the top of my foot than the 4s did. The Timp 4 really brought my attention to Altra, but this fit was disappointing. I had to get Olympus to get similar feel, but I was hoping for the comfort that I still get with my 4s. They went from the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn to feeling like everything else. They used to go into more detail on their "roomy toe box" options too. Seems like that was left behind for a generic statement.

Not super impressed with the timp 5's they are already coming apart after only a few months of trail runs, less than 100 miles in them. My og outroads are better imo. The right shoe feels off from the left shoe giving me knee pain. I feel like the quality should be a lot better for an expensive shoe like this. I love Altra but these have missed the mark for me.

Brought these to go on a trip to do some light hiking this week. Was really looking forward to these shoes thinking they would be like most Altra's with a wide toe box. After all, that was kind of what they were known for that separated them from other similar shoe brands at least in my mind. Super disappointed how narrow it is and how narrow the midsection is. It pushes your toes together and the angle of the midsection makes your toes point wired and pushes the pinky toe into the side and crutches it against the rest of your toes. Then you have a wide gap on the big toe side. If I hadn't already worn them for the last few days I would return them. I loved my old torrins. I bought two pair this time and the other was the paradigm wide. Not as great looking of a shoe kind of old man looking but a much, much more comfortable fit I can wear. I like how the temp 5 hides the height of the sole with a cool color pattern that camouflages its high cushion. It would be nice to see that some of the other high cushion shoes. Anyhow, that's my input.

My first trail run I only tested these Loan Peak 5's out for a half mile and I thought these were perfect. I was wrong so let me explain after actually running average 7 miles each day on the trail. After 2 trail runs around 7 miles each day, Both of pinky toes were throbbing because of how tight the toe box was. The mid foot is perfect width but the toe box is basically wearing a pair of medium width shoes. So I was let down big time because of this because everything else with this shoe is great. The cushion, durability of the upper holding your foot in and the vibram soles are why I bought this shoe. I am a true 9.5 and I bought a 9.5 and these were squeezing my toes together. Then I went to the shop up the block from me and tried the size 10, and the toe box fit better, but the heel felt loose, I couldn't imagine down trekking or up trekking a steep hill or mountain because of the heel. So I have to return these and get the Loan Peak 9 plus is 9.5 because I also tried these on in the shop and they fit the width of my wide foot. I don't know why the timps are so narrow, instead of advertising the "roomy toe box" in this Timp 5, Altra some advertise it as "medium width", now I have to decrease the stack height and go with the Loan Peak even though I really loved these Timp 5s. If you have a truly wide foot, save yourself time and get a pair of Altra's that would fit your toe box. Hopefully they make the toe box roomier in the Timp 5 because I have no other complains other then the width.

I usually don't leave reviews, but I figured I'd share my experience to help others as (indecisive) as myself! I wear a 10.5 in every Altra I've owned. In these, my toes are at the very end with the 10.5 but have a full thumb and a half left on the 11's (slightly more room than I'm comfortable with). In both, the mid-foot is extremely narrow, which I don't mind as much (I like a snug fit to prevent sliding). This very well could be that my foot is just unique enough to need a (non-existent) 10.75! Ultimately, I ended up going with the 11. But, because of the excessive toe room, it creases in an unusual spot, which has caused some unfortunate cutting into my top foot. As mentioned, this could very well be just the shape of my foot, BUT - I haven't had this issue with any other Altra model. Again, just sharing so it hopefully helps others decide on sizing/models!

Feel great and have relieved toe pinching on long runs however the shoes started delaminating on my first walk of 6 miles and has got a bit worse over the last 30 miles. Disappointed.
