In a lot of ways this is really the perfect Altra trail shoe. The Vibram outsole is probably the best all arounder that Altra has ever offered. The cushioning is absolutely perfect. Doesn't feel excessively hard or pancake like Lone Peaks, but also doesn't feel clunky or unstable like the Olympus. Absolutely perfect. It's light, fast, well cushioned, grippy, the flex is perfect too. Not super flexible like the lone peak or previous Timp, but not stiff like the Olympus either. Just enough flex to give you some ground feel and articulation, but also offers a touch of support for big mile days. Unfortunately it has some bizarre fit issues. I don't have particularly wide feet, that's not why I got into Altra's, and I've never had any toe rub issues... except on these. My pinky toe is slammed up against the outside of the shoe, while I have a thumb width gap on the inside. If I stand on the shoe without putting my foot inside, I can see the heel is straight but the forefoot is angled to the inside. I've had other Altra's with the same foot shape and never had this issue. Also talked to a woman on one of our local trails that had the exact same issue except worse, the whole side of her foot was hanging over the edge of the midsoles because of the weird angled forefoot. Not sure is this is an intentional (terrible) design decision or some kind of production issue, but it's an absolute shame because it ruined what is probably Altras best trail shoe in years.

This is the first pair of Altras I wouldn't buy again. I mean they're fine, and ill run in them a few more months. They don't seem to have the same "Foot Shape" as other Altra models. My toes are square, so the Timp 5s pinch my little toes. I didn't experience that with Torin 5s or Lone Peaks I've owned before.

Great for long runs. Recommend going up half a size if coming from Lone Peak.

Not quite sure what's going on with the poor reviews and the apparent quality control issues, but these are by far my favorite pair of ultra shoes I've ever had. I've run in three different types of road running shoes on both a half marathon and a 25k and I've bought in pairs just to walk around in at my daily wear and I've had one other pair of trail shoes from these guys and this outsole is so sticky. It makes me want to jump from rock to rock even when I don't have to. Even if the rocks are wet, I have literally never slipped on anything since I've purchased these shoes. I've gone through Creeks. I've gone through Rivers. I've gone through streams purposely gone through puddles, run up mountains and I've run down mountains in Michigan, Idaho, Arkansas, and Utah and I've never had a problem. In fact, I'm thinking about buying one or two extra pair just so I have them. Because the ones I have now are only going to last so long before they have too many miles to use effectively.

I loved these shoes for my 50k Ultra marathon. They were good on the hard pack and sidewalk sections as well as the sloppy muddy sections we had. They are supportive for long runs, yet light agile for technical single tracks. I never owned a prior generation of Timps, but I really liked these. I thought these fit better than the Olympus' too.

All time favorite shoes (so far). Extremely comfortable, supportive, and lightweight. I wear these as my go-to daily shoe and have another dedicated pair for hiking. As someone with a narrow ankle and wide forefoot, these shoes provide the right amount ankle stability while still giving my foot the space to spread out comfortably. I love the sensation of flying down a mountain trail on these shoes.

I have four pairs of the Timp 5, two are goretex with no leaks. I have extensive backpacking and hiking with no issues. They are comfortable and very grippy.

I wear these shoes hiking in the mountains around Phoenix Arizona. I am recovering from a bad case of plantar fasiitis. I bought these shoes because I wanted a shoe with a wide toe box and zero drop.

This is a rough trail running shoe. It isn't intended for casual use or road running. On rough trails you typically want a shoe with a thinner stack height like the Loan Peak models made by Altra. However, on surfaces with extreme variations, this often will result in foot pain which can last for months. So runners will sacrifice the safety of a thinner stack height for the added cushion of a thicker stack. These shoes are intentionally designed to fit a bit tighter. This is to minimize the odds of turning ones ankle when running. The thicker the stack height, the higher the odds of turning ones ankle and the magnitude of damage increases as well. It is common for a person to have some degree of movement inside a shoe. This movement which is relatively safe on flat running conditions, becomes a safety hazard on rough trails. If you own a comfortable fitting pair of Loan Peaks, do not upsize the Timp 5's to have a similar fit. Otherwise your compromising what this shoe fixes, compared to other thick stack height shoes. I use these in winter running conditions, where the trails are mainly ice. The trails are covered in shoe imprints frozen solid, varying normally 1 to 4 inches in depth. I outfit the shoes with spiked ice cleats, equivalent to the 'Gear Spike X Ice Cleats'. The combination of the Timp 5's and spiked ice cleats are miles better than anything I have used before. For winter trail running. Missing the ease of summer trail running in the Lone Peaks.

I normally wear a Size 10 but ordered a 10 1/2 and it fits perfectly. There's a ton of room for my toes to spread out and really connect with the ground. There is also plenty of cushion in the soles and great traction for all types of terrain. I recently ran my first 10k Trail Run (Mammoth Race in Texas) and it was awesome! My feet felt great and I ran about 7.2 miles in around 1hr 20mins. I highly recommend these shoes. I'm looking forward to my next trail race.

This shoe fixed my hip and forefoot issues. I'm on my 3rd pair and constantly on the lookout for more. Love that they provide high cushioning without looking like you're walking on foam yoga blocks. I always buy men's sizes now because they feel slightly roomier in the toe box.

I'm a very fit 67 yr old male that power walks all the time and the open toe box is critical for comfort and steady movement. I've tried a few of the Altra types and the Timp 5 is just right for me. Thank you Altra team!!

I have 1,100 miles on these shoes. They have held up beyond expectations. They are comfortable, and I have run 50ks and 50 milers in them. I've run on pavement, sand, dirt, gravel, rocky Shenandoah National Park, and more in them. They have worn out well. I will get another pair.

This shoe is a WORKHORSE! Coming from other barefoot shoes, (vibram five fingers, softstar, and vivo), I have to say I have found my perfect shoe. Who ever designed this and came up wit the 0 MM drop, wide to extra wide toe box and the durable products used in this shoe knows exactly how a shoe should be! Im a size 9 extra wide in a Nike so I was tentative on buying the Timp 5 because I didn't know the toe box would fit my wide to extra wide feet, well they fit perfect. Its a secure toe box that keeps your foot locked in when sprinting up and down hills, especially in rocky terrain. I was reccomended by Altra "Whats my size" feature to go with a size 9.5 and they were spot on, these fit like a 9 would. Ive tested out the Loan Peak 9+ and these feel and perform much better IMO because of the durability in the forefoot and mid foot, the material feels like it doesn't flex as much as the Loan Peak does which I prefer. Im going to test the durability of these shoes with the type of training I do and im also a heavier person 230 lbs so we will see in time if these hold up with my sprints on rocky, dirt, sand terrain thats met with steep hills. This shoe keeps your foot locked in, the side walls of the shoe are sturdy and strong, the outsole has the perfect bounce to it with its cushioning, all around a workhorse of a shoe. Coming fro barefoot running the only thing I regret is not putting these on 13 years ago when I started. Im glad I made the change to be a part of the Altra family! As far as trail running, if you want a more secure, locked down fit, with a bit more protection on the outsole, then go with the Timp 5, they will fit snug around your wide to extra wide foot. As far as the Vibram outsole, as everyone knows it performed an A+, and thats one of the main reasons why I purchased these, because of the Vibram Megagrip. I can tell these will perform very well even in the case which im going to put lots of pressure on these by running, sprinting, and lateral movements, through snowy conditions, rain, and dry. These are listed as "standard fit", but these will fit a wide to extra wide foot, my foot is very wide so they will fit you snug just like a trail running shoe should fit!

I have been a dedicated Lone Peak loyalist from the beginning but decided to give the Timp a try. The Vibram sole that is new to this year's Timp 5 and the desire for more cushion on long hikes and runs is what convinced me to compare to my Lone Peaks. I couldn't be more happy that I did because I will now be wearing the Timp trail runners full time and have officially converted. I still keep a pair of the Lone Peaks because they are lighter weight and easier to fit into a roller bag for business travel so I can exercise but I don't use them at home any more. For those interested in my comparison/experience between the two shoes, here's a rundown: I have a wider forefoot and that's why I first fell in love with the Lone Peak. I did try the wide size in the Lone Peaks but they were way too wide for me so I only wear the regular width. The fit between the two is very similar but the Timp is slightly more narrow in the forefoot width. I actually like the fit better because my foot can still splay out with plenty of space but it feels a little more supportive - particularly when side-hilling. The cushion is the biggest and most noticeable feature in the Timp but I will gush on the spring too. The Lone Peak doesn't have the same responsiveness and spring and the Timp does this beautifully. One thing that disappointed me with the Lone Peak series is that they eliminated the d-ring for gaiters several iterations ago. Not a deal breaker but I loved that feature a lot and hate having to clip the gaiters onto my laces. Timp to the rescue on that front, however! That was yet another reason that I was excited to try them out. I will nitpick here though and share that they put the d-ring too far back from the toe. It should be closer to the toe and further from the laces but it's still mostly functional - I just can't get a tight fit with my Altra gaiters any more. Maybe the lacing used to go closer to the toe? The Lone Peak 5 was the last version to carry the d-ring on that model and I feel like the Lone Peak 4 and 5 perfected the location of that gaiter clip point. I've got about 60 miles in the Timp 5s now and I couldn't be happier. My feet, legs, and back feel less fatigued, my running cadence is dialed with a nice spring, and they absorb rocks, roots, and trail bumps like a champ. I also love that they don't look or feel to clunky and chunky. Altra really crushed this one and the Vibram sole is excellent. I can already tell these are the most durable Altras I've ever had and will last a lot longer than my beloved Lone Peaks.
