The Rivera 2's are my favorite road shoe to run in, I find myself running in these on the road more than any other pair of altra's that I owe and I have an extensive collection with multiple pairs of each model (Rivera 1, Torin 4.5, Torin 5, Paradigm). The 2's are an improvement on the first generation Rivera's, they are a smoother run, minimal, and have a barely there feel. I can run upwards of 20 miles in these shoes and I have no issue. The Rivera's are a great versatile shoe, I live really close to my local trails and I run to the trail heads from home; I can run with my Rivera 1's and 2's on the road and on the trails with enough traction to descend on technically trail terrain.
These shoes do run a bit more narrow than Torins and the Paradigm, so sizing up might bean issue for some. I find that these shoes being more narrow helps with descending on steep hills as my feet do not slip and slide within the shoe.
If you're looking for a great all around shoe for short speedy runs, longer runs, and varying terrain these are the shoes for you!

The Rivera 2 surpassed my expectations. It's LIGHT, but not with any sacrifice for support underfoot in longer runs. I found the shoe to be a little smaller than my sizing in other trainers, but was still able to run comfortably with my ordered size! I didn't realize how badly my feet needed a toebox like these. Highly recommend!

This is the most breathable shoe I've ever worn. It gets HOT where I live so shoes that don't make my feet sweat are super important. Only four stars because the green color stains way too easily.

I thought I had found the perfect shoe for walking the dog and doing errands: I have arthritis and Morton's Neuroma and can use my custom orthotics in these. It's hot where I live, and these shoes are breathable and fairly cool. As a bonus, they look better than most shoes with a wide toe box. Sadly, they are not durable. After only two months of wearing them for several hours a day, my left shoe developed a hole in the toe where the fabric meets the rubber toe guard. For the price, I would have expected them to last longer.

I purchased the Rivera 2 to try to change things up a bit. For roads I typically run in Escalantes or the Escalante Racer depending on the day. These have been my absolute favorite for the road but I'm really working on trying to rotate my shoes more! Out of the box these were nice. Things I liked they had quite a bit of cushion. I will say that this took some getting used to for me as I typically run in something a bit more firm and lightweight. However, this is my 'go-to' shoe after a long run day or just if I want to feel some gentle support. I now find myself gravitating towards these. There isn't really anything I don't like about these shoes at this time. I will say this is my first time trying out Rivera's and I am fairly impressed!

I love my Altra Gaitor Trap shoes, but Altra stopped making them. I’ve been trying to find a shoe that will fit as well and offer great arch support. I love the look of this new style, but the shoes aren’t as supportive. They are just a bit too big, so I am wearing them with thicker socks. I already sent back a pair that were too small. I’ll keep looking for a more supportive walking shoe.

These shoes are like walking on clouds. I bought these to wear to the gym on lifting days because my On Clouds make my feet rock. These are more flat on the bottom and feel like I am standing on a ortho mat in my bare feet. Very breathable and comfortable. My feet feel secure while squatting, etc. I don't have to wear my custom insoles in these because the arch support is sufficient. I have a narrow heel and my foot doesn't slip out of these like other athletic shoes. I hate when my toes are scrunched up and love that my toes have plenty of room in these. I normally order a 8-8.5 in athletic shoes and an 8.5 fit perfectly.

Altra shoes have always captured my eye so I was excited to get to try these out and I love them! Nice and wide for my feet and reminded me of being barefoot almost. Great support for any distance!

These are my favorite shoes for running, walking and every day comfort. I got my first pair over a year ago and loved them so much I ordered four more, but three of my new ones are coming unglued on the bottom after very little wear. I have already returned one, but would really like to find a glue to fix the others. I'm so disappointed in the quality of these shoes.

I bought the Rivera 2s in black (we don't have other colours in Canada) and fell in love instantly: comfortable right out of the box, felt like walking on clouds and just amazing every way. I loved them so much I ordered the light green from the US. I don't know why (when I emailed customer service I was told different colours have different soles) but the light green ones have a hardened cushion; my foot soles noticed immediately and after trying them on my treadmill I went to bed with sore knees. I'm so disappointed because I loved the black ones so much and because it is a gamble for us Canadians to order from the US with longer timelines and duty to pay.

This is one of the more stylish shoes I've seen from Altra. I love their foot shaped toe box. But, they've never been fashionable or pretty shoes. Sadly. But, this one is much too short. I have no experience with Rivera. So I don't know if this is a change. Why are all shoe manufacturers making their shoes shorter and more complicated?!?!

Love the wide toe box. As someone with "normal" width feet, I never knew how big a difference having an extra roomy toe box could be! Zero-drop takes a bit to get used to, but definitely comfy and supportive

I own several pairs of the Rivera 2 (black, light blue, white, white/yellow and orange). My favorite ones are the light blue and white ones because the shoe laces are flat and easier to marathon tie. However, a small increase in lace length would be super appreciated. I keep two shoes in rotation for running and retire them at about 350 miles. They still feel okay, but I'm old and don't want to risk it, so they become walking shoes for a few months. For my feet, the width is perfect. I have a couple of toes that have been broken repeatedly and never healed to their original state. So the extra width at the toes is wonderful and I'm able to use my whole foot especially when doing balance exercises.

When the escalante changed for the worse and I was unable to run in it I found the Rivera 2 and I am loving them. They are responsive and flexible with just the right cushioning. I was able to run and love it again. Unfortunately, version 3 is out and the shoe is going the way of the escalante, heavier, stiffer, thicker bottom. Altra please leave one shoe that is more minimal and flexible because that is what makes your company unique. Also please keep the larger toebed for toes to naturally splay when running. I sized up a half size in these.

They take a little getting used to, but I absolutely love these. So much that this is my second pair. Keep in mind that if you wear dark socks, you may see the details through the cloth (depends on the chosen color). These are very breathable shoes. I typically wear a size 8, but I prefer an 8.5 to make sure there's extra room for my toes. I have Morton's Neuroma and these shoes really lessen the issues! I will forever buy this brand.

So sad this color was discontinued. Love these and the color. I would buy them all over. Not a fan of the new release colorsdarker than I prefer. But great shoes! So I bought the dusty teal in the discontinued rivera2.

I did not follow recommendation to go up a half size and regretted it. Sent back for a larger size and it’s perfect.

I normally either wear the torrins or solstice shoes, but decided to try the Rivera 's because they were on sale. I REALLY like these shoes!!!! They feel very comfortable for an everyday shoe. I'm not a runner, I do HIIT a few times a week and strength training the rest on the week. I'm a fitness coach and I'm on my feet for 3-4 hours a day and these shoes are great, enough support and cushion. Would highly recommend!!!

LOVE my 1st Gen Riveras but was hesitant to try these due to the slim shape. Shouldn't have waited so long--these are even better! Yes they hug your feet but it's like being hugged by a cloud. So light and comfy.

These are perfect. Zero drop, but with a little cushion. I have painful arthritis in my toes, and these make walking less painful and aren't funny looking like a lot of the minimalist shoes. I got the Loyaks which are super cute and comfy, but I spend a lot of time pounding the pavement, and it's nice to have the cushion the Rivera offers. Thanks Altra and Zappos for tolerating my never-ending quest for shoes that can keep me walking.
