I got this for my son last year when he started kinder. Everything about it good except one of the straps. It gets loose even when used as normal and I'm having to adjust it for him every other day. And no, this isn't happening because it's old. It's been happening since the beginning. Because of this, he generally puts the back back on over just one shoulder. Really annoying. Looking into buying him another backpack.

Honestly it is very uncomfortable. The straps on this bag are super stiff and keep giving my son red marks on this neck. Every other backpack we have had in the past 40 + years of our lives has never done this. Even when I wear it, same marks on my neck. Bean doesn't have any other color/options my son likes so we are just dealing with it.

We've owned LLBean backpacks for years, but have been sorely disappointed with the one we purchased this year. Our son has literally carried the backpack 4 times and now there's a hole on the front compartment. Customer service has been of little assistance. I requested to send them photos to determine whether the issue would be covered under warranty or not and they want the entire backpack back before making a decision, which would leave my son without a backpack (or me to purchase a second one elsewhere) for an indeterminate amount of time. Very disappointed with LLBean.

The embroidery was very disappointing and small. I expected my daughter's name to be larger than the "LL Bean".

My son has only been using the book bag for a week and his reflective strip is already damaged. I'd expect better quality from a bag at this price. Overall, the quality of the bag seems to be good it just looks cheap with the damage.

I purchased this backpack for my son. The backpack itself is of good quality, and what you would expect from LL Bean. The personalization though, is absolutely terrible! I went with the recommended thread color of black in the blue camo...and his name is embroidered on the same color of the backpack so you cannot see anything but the last few letters. Why recommend a thread color if someone isn't going to take a look at the actual backpack when doing the embroidering?! Not to mention the embroidery is way too small so it looks very cheaply done. Thanks for sending me a ruined backpack

Love the product itself but the personalization was a major flop. It's so small that I honestly thought they forgot to stitch our piece. We had to buy a personalized keychain to label our daughter's backpack.

I'm giving an updated review after a year of use. For context, I bought my older daughter an LL Bean backpack when she started school 4 years ago. I had to patch one spot b/c she's a backpack dragger, but otherwise it has held up great and the design of it works well. Now last year I bought one for my youngest to start school with and I couldn't find the same one, so I settled on this. Side by side, you can just tell the quality and details are not there. It's very boxy so it just looks larger than our other one and it always looked like the bag was going to swallow our kindergartener. My biggest complaint comes with the straps. They are straight and stiff and don't conform to her little body at all so it always looks uncomfortably just from the weight of her lunch box in there. The webbing is so stiff and slick that it was constantly sliding through the adjuster which then makes the back back drag and be even more uncomfortable. At least weekly we had to tighten the straps. It's been washed a few times and hasn't softened. I was hoping to have backpack that would last years, but we will be on the hunt for a new one again this year.

I bought this backpack for my 5 year old and he was o excited about it. He used this past year for kindergarten to carry a water bottle, a book and a folder, in other words, the load carried was very light. However, I noticed the strap is already half way ripped and I'm afraid it won't last him through first grade. Everything else on the backpack is still in great shape, but what's the point if the strap snaps. Very disappointed.

I bought this backpack for my daughter less than two years ago. She wore it for kindergarten and first grade, so never had anything heavy to carry. Today the strap snapped right where it attaches to the bottom and I can see that the other side is starting to fray as well. This seems like a design flaw.

Didn't last for the full year of pre-K. Disappointed. I expected LL Bean quality to at least get 2-3 years out of backpack.

My little boy has only had this backpack a few years, and it is already time to throw it away. The side pocket where one stores a sippy cup or water bottle has busted open, with the stitching having separated from the fabric. I still have my own LL Bean backpack from high school 30+ years ago, so this is surprising and disappointing. To top it off, I have zero recourse, ever since LL Bean changed their guarantee several years ago...when the Lifetime Warranty went out the window, so did the quality.

The strap frayed completely off within 2 months. The other strap also began to fray. Bought this to last several school years. What a waste of money.

Bought this as a Christmas gift and it lasted 9 months for our elementary child. The zippers on the medium pocket just wore out and could not be repaired. Wanted to love this backpack but it just didn't last. Returning it for poor quality. We really try to take good care of our things/make them last and don't want to buy a new backpack every year. This backpack makes lots of top reviews but it didn't make the cut.

I bought this for my then 3rd grade daughter. After 11 months of use, one strap tore completely off today. She has not carried heavy things, usually just a light folder and maybe a jacket. She wears the bag using both straps, so there hasn't been an unbalanced use on that one strap either. My son has had the LL Bean Explorer backpack for over 2 years and that one is holding up very well. Spend a few more bucks and get that one instead. In my photos you can see that the straps are sewn in better on this model.

I had the bigger version of this backpack as a kid and it lasted me all through high school and college. So for my own kids I figured we'd get one backpack and at least make it to middle school. The zipper on ours broke after year 2, so it's out of the 1-year window and I was told it is considered normal wear and tear and they couldn't do anything about it. Nothing happened to damage the zipper, it started to just open up spontaneously in the middle. I'm just disappointed to not have even gotten even 3 years out of it when these bags used to last forever. Otherwise the size and features are perfect.

There isn't a separate compartment for a laptop computer. Students are now issued laptops in kindergarten they must be brought home and returned everyday. The separate compartment should be a standard feature on all book bags for school use.
