I have wide feet and a high instep as well and after years of running in Brooks developed a Morton's neuroma in my right foot. These shoes are incredible. My husband looked at them and asked if they modeled them on my foot.
I wear a 9 wide and experience no compression or nerve tingling during or after running like I do with literally any other shoes. It's as comfortable as walking barefoot. The zero drop also helps as I am not putting additional forward pressure on that nerve when my foot flexes.
The tongue is definitely stiff at first but I folded it down for a week and now it's fine. I'm sure they'll fix that in the next model and these will be five star shoes for me.

I have seen many comments on the tongue for this shoe and I will say out of the box I felt the same way, the top of my foot was very uncomfortable before I made a change with the laces. In fact that is the one issue I have with Altra, they come with terrible laces. I replaced the laces to the Torin 5 with laces from my old Topos, and did not lace them up through the tongue and through the extra holes, as I feel this does nothing more than to make it difficult to get the right feel of lace tightness. Once I did that, the top of my foot where the tongue hits was perfectly fine and the shoe felt great and the tongue doesn't slip. A note to Altra, we spend all this money on your shoes, please invest a little more in better shoelaces. The one you provide are thin and make it hard to get laces adjusted and get a comfortable feel/fit. And those extra holes near the 5th lace hole from front, to me it provides no additional value other than to make it more difficult to lace up/tighten to my comfort. Once that adjustment was made, I was running very comfortably! Attached a photo to help explain.

The only reason that it's not 5 stars is because the tongue definitely needs to be broken in before it's comfortable. On my first run (only 3 miles) it sliced open my left ankle (the right one was fine). That being said, they do break in so don't be scared off by all of these haters! Just massage them a bit and wear some higher socks for your first few runs and you'll be good to go. It will be worth it! The shoe is soft while still feeling fast. It fits well and I genuinely think it assists my running form! Love my Torin!

I've been wearing Escalante for a few years now. The latest 2.5 being my fave (1.5 least). But the soles do not last long. I've tried other Altra lines but nothing feels like the Escalante. Now the Torin to me feels like Escalante just with more cushion and a more "rugged" sole. The Luxe are hot, will be good cold weather shoe. The Torin feel more Escalante outer. My only complaint is the tongue, on the Torin and Torin Luxe. If they could be like the Escalante tongue, I'd be in heaven (particularly the Luxe, the thicker tongue doesn't give which leaves it digging into my foot bend). The true test will be to see how the sole holds up.

Best shoe I've ever worn, unfortunately they're starting to fall apart after just a couple of months.

Yes, I liked older Torin versions better and was surprised at the new tongue, but I did not find the tongue to be a problem. I've done several long runs between 16-19 miles with no rubbing at all.

The size and the fit were fine. This is my third pair of Altras. The other two pairs were Torin 4s. The 5 that I just received was a bit uncomfortable in that the tongue is very rigid and does not bend making it rub against the top of my ankle, digging into my skin. I wanted these so bad and was so sure that they were right that I wore them out on the road for a run before I realized that they were digging into my ankle. One shoe seems worse that the other. They are very comfortable in all other areas. Just wished I’d known about the tongue rub.

I saw reviews of people complaining about the tongue material and I agree that it is way more stiff than the Torin 4.5. However I had no problem on my 17 miler by just hiking my socks up so the tongue didn’t rub my ankle raw like other reviewers. Great fit, great color, looking forward to more miles in them!

Great to have the space! Finally found a shoe I love! Just could be softer at the bottom with cushion but it is comfortable!

I bought these because I loved my 4.5 plush and I wanted to rotate them in my training. They're a good shoe with great cushion, but the tongue on these cut my ankle up. Admittedly a little 2Toms helps, but if I don't remember, I pay!! Also, I love the pink, but it shows dirt way to easy. I take these to a race and they'll be trashed if I step in a portapotty, and these are way too expensive for that. Can we please think about cute darker color ways like the ones the Rivera has out now in the next release please?

These are great shoes, very comfortable, nice wide toe box . But WHY would they design the tongue like that. It's so rough! Hope it softens up.

First pair of altars. Very comfortable, 0 drop prevents me from heel striking. Doesn't squish my entire foot like regular running shoes. Only issue is, like many others have said, the tongue stabs you in the ankle until you break them in.

As a physician in a hospital, when the pandemic started I pulled my old Torins out to start wearing them with my scrubs at work. Now that the second wave is really hitting Oregon hard, I decided that I would rather look less professional and be more comfortable as I ran around. So I bought a new pair! The shoes totally save my back and my feet because the hospital floors are basically cement. I prefer to run in the paradigms but I'm also getting older so I need the cushion.

Just the right amount of toe space I needed coming off an injury. I haven't had any of the tongue issues as other reviewers have. My only complaint is that it feels lower on the cushion amount.

Overall I really like this shoe. I agree with the others about the tongue issue and made the mistake of wearing short socks with them for my first run (it left a painful rub on my ankle). Since then, I am sure to wear taller socks and lube up my ankles for runs with these and have had no issues. Do I think I should have to do that? No. But the shoes are nice enough that I'm willing to do it.

I have owned several pair of Altra Torin over the years. While I still love the fit and comfort of the running shoe, this years model has been my least favorite. The tongue and material is much stiffer than other models. The Torin 4.0 was most comfortable, but it is now discontinued as the new models have come out.

I returned the regular width and purchased the wide width. The wide is extremely comfortable. This is more like the original Altra's. The wider width is more like you would expect for a natural foot shape shoe. Wish it had more cushioning, but this is okay . The grey/coral color is prettier than the picture. I loved the pink, but not available for the wide width. This is my fourth pair of Torin"s. The original was the best for cushioning

Great update on this shoe. I usually have to wear the men's versions of Altras but not with these. The width is spot on and this model has sufficient volume so they accommodate my custom orthotics perfectly with no heel slip. Two negatives - 1. I prefer a more padded tongue that is softer over the top of my foot. Like other reviewers have commented, the rough edge hits my ankles. I cut them so they are below the sock line - that works fine. Still, Altra, bring back a softer, more flexible, and padded tongue. 2. With the exception of the coral colorway, I don't like the other choices. Overall, though this is a great shoe.

I think I like the Plush better, but I'm happy with the 5except for the tongue. Gotta wear higher socks, which I don't prefer but these are just long run shoes, not race shoes. They'll get me through my summer marathon training and then I'll donate. Hope Altra takes heart to these reviews for the next version.

Preparing for a half marathon in November. I'm moving away from buying Nike everything so I decided to try Altra as recommended by a fitness podcast I like listening to.
I'm absolutely obsessed with the width of the toe box. It's a little less cushion than I'm used to, but I think I like it.
The only problem is the tongue. Like other reviews before mine, the tongue digs into my ankle. I will take the advice of one reviewer and sew it down. Definitely a design flaw.

I love these shoes for the style and wide toe box (nothing else seems to accommodate my toes so well); helps with my plantar fasciitis. HOWEVER the tongue is AWFUL! I’m a nurse and the tongue “ate” through the tape within a few hours. No choice but tall socks for these. I still love everything else about these shoes

Altra sent me these to replace a defective pair of the Torin 4.5 that lasted me only a couple months. Good warranty.
The tongue on these is a little high but will break in I assume.

I usually wear a Woman's WIDE New Balance & this Torrin 5 shoe has tons of cushion for the feet & cute style. The only thing is; the size 12 feels more like an 11.5.I'm unable to put my inserts in the shoe. Will test the shoe out w/o inserts for a week

This is my first pair of Altra and after running in them a few times I have enjoyed running in them on my short runs. The toe width is great and will definitely keep running in them. Good color too
