I have wide Donald Duck feet and Altras in wide are the only shoes that fit comfortably. I can definitely understand the complaint about the tongue. But it doesn't bother me much as I like thick socks with ankles.

Have 4 pairs & have loved them all, this pair however the sole is coming off. I see it pulling each day that I wear them (I alternate these & a plush pair) None of the other 3 have done this.

I gave this shoe 4 stars for feeling slightly less friendly when trying on and concern about the tongue rubbing and durability which will be revealed with time. The Altra Torin 4 Plush got a 5 from me. I have used running shoes for walking for years (best shock absorption/cushioning). I discovered Altras a few years ago. I loved my Torin 4 Plushes ALOT! I was hoping for the same all around cushy feel in the collar, tongue, and outsole of the old shoes. Not quite the same but close. I have concerns about the thinness of the upper over the toes as I tend to wear a hole around the big toe historically. (Yes, I trim my nails). The first pair of running shoes I didn't wear a hole in big toe area was the Torin 4 Plushes which I have been wearing for nearly 3 years. Took the Torin 5's for a 5 miler the day after i received them as I was concerned about comments I had read in reviews of the Torin 5's tongue cutting into the front of the ankle. I had no issue fortunately. They performed well. No blisters or chaffing. Might be sock choice? I do miss the more padded, soft tongue of the 'old rides'. Laces seem a bit short. Also, I wear Dirty Girl gaiters when I walk to keep sand and debris out of my shoes and socks. Unlike trail runners that have gaiter traps the road runners do not. I wish they did. Getting grit in your socks and shoes when walking/running even on paved roads and trails is an issue and an irritant. The new outsole shape does not allow me to place the adhesive velcro patch (the retrofit for shoes with no gaiter traps) on the shoes on the upper part of the outsole at the back as I had on my previous pair. I hope the new shoes wear as well as the previous pair. I really like Altra's wide foot shape toe box. Where I live there are no places near by to go and try on Altra's with the exception of Altra's trail runners. So...I am forced to do business by mail. Some times it takes a couple tries to get a shoe that fits right.

To fix the Tongue issue of this shoe, simply TIE THE BOW OF THE LACE BEHIND THE TONGUE, but first insert the lace inward into the absolute last (auxiliary) hole, then tie as usual.

Size and width true to size. However, the tongue poked into the front of my ankle and so I returned the shoe. For its price, the tongue should be shorter, softer, and not do this.

I was a little concerned when I read the reviews about the tongue BUT I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't an issue! I did lace them differently than normal (looped through the tops) and that made sure they didn't slide around and now they're perfect! I love them - definitely recommend!

I love Altras and this WOULD be the perfect shoe if it weren't for a very strange design flaw...the shoe tongue below the laces has a flat sharp edge that digs into the front of my ankle. I'm sorry to say I need to return these.

I love the feel of them over all!!! The tongue is too long and sharp though. It cut into my ankle on my second run. I need to wear longer socks or cut the tongue down to make it feel better. However, after the runs I have completed in them my body feels great!!

I broke a cardinal rule, not to take new shoes on a trip. I did and I walked a lot and they were great. About 8 miles a day, to be specific, in Mexico City. I do have experience with Altra, especially with Paradigm. I have a set of shoe stretchers for width because I have special paddles, I meant feet, and I stretched them out before the trip. These are just thin. The tongue is so thin, the sole is thin. They are very comfortable but I am not sure they will last very long. I don't know why a person with special feet can't buy a plain white or cute gold or stylish comfort shoes. Shoe companies need to figure this out.

I owe Altra a huge apology for my harsh past comments. I ran in the 5's today but this time in a Balega blister resistant sock which is very heavy cushioning as well as a 1/2 size down (which is truer to my size) and it was a game changer! Altra is truly the only shoe that make my feet smile. I have been running in the Lone Peak 6 and it felt so much like the Torin I decided to give it another try and I'm really glad I did. That being said and I'd like to believe that Altra reads these reviews, I still stand on my complete dislike regarding the tongue. I just don't understand why they would release a great shoe with such a horribly cheap and awful part of the shoe. I really hope they can one day return to some basics that brought them to where they once were.

I was looking for a shoe with a wide toe box due to my bunion. I was beginning to have pain on the top of my foot and really didn’t want to give up running. This shoe was perfect! The only negative I have, is the tongue of the shoe rubbed sores on my ankles. I had to switch from my no show ankle socks to something taller.

Altra customer service recommended I try the Torin when I didn't like the Escalante 2.5 (loved the 2). At first the tongue cut into my ankles and my left foot toes kept hitting the front, so that wasn't fun but eventually my skin developed scars that kind of act like a buffer for the tongues, so no longer an issue. I was able to train for and run my first ultra, a 50k, in these. Overall I'm happy with the ride, they still feel good at 400 miles. The tread has held up better than any former shoe! Uncertain if I'll stick with these or try a new model for 2022 training.

This shoe fits perfect to size, perfect width, and very comfortable. It also provides great support and traction. I would have given a 5 star if there was a finger loop to help get them on. In order to get them on you need to loosen the shoe every time. The heal backing falls easily under your foot and makes it very difficult to get on in a hurry.

Unfortunately had to return these, they fit great and felt good except for the edge of the tongue. The rubber tip just kept digging into my leg which was annoying. I hope they can design the next shoe with a softer tongue.

I just switched to Altra shoes for marathon training and love the feel of the entire shoe EXCEPT the aggressive, hard tongue. Everything about the shoe is great aside from this one, very important aspect. I've ran in the shoes for a week and after running 10 miles two days ago I noticed my ankles bruised and hurt. I went to run 4 miles today and ultimately had to cut off the tip of the tongue for better comfort-that really helped. Please think about redesigning only the tongue of the shoe because it's too hard and there's no give which leaves your ankles bruised and cut. I don't want to keep cutting off the tongue when paying good money for the shoe. Thanks!!

The tongue of the shoe is made out of a material that is uncomfortable at my ankle. Doesn't bend or conform to my ankle properly. And hard to get on, need a shoe horn to get into it.

Great for running and prevents knee pain. However the tongue is sharp and cut into my leg and I later used scissors to cut the tongue down. Otherwise great shoe for long runs. May try the paradigm next.

Wish the shoe tongue was softer, my other pair grew softer but it took a while. Also wish more colors were available,

I transitioned from wearing the Escalante for the past year to the Torin 5 and love the extra support in the sole. My only gripe is the tongue presses into my ankle with short socks, so long socks it is!

I don't like the thin tongue. Rubs on top of ankle and actually hurts. Other than that great. Have had 4 pairs of similar shoe but tongue had padding. Work in healthcare with arthritis in feet and work well for me.

Love the shoe but wish the tongue wasn't so sharp. It has made my ankles bleed in the break in process.

This is my third pair. They are great for working on my feet all day. The only issue is that the tongue is way too stiff. I had to cut half of the tongue off to keep it from cutting into my skin. Please change to a softer material for the tongue.

In the new Torin I need a wide width. This fits well and I'm glad to have a new color in the wide option. Tongue is thin, stiff and uncomfortable. I bought thin girls crew socks and rolled down cuff.

This was the second pair I had purchased and these didn't seem to have as much cushioning as the previous pair. Not sure why. The only difference was that there was a 5 after Torin on the newer pair.
