I am a huge Torin fan. Until now. I don't understand how anyone could have thought a sharp hard plastic tongue was a good idea. Even with higher socks and trimming the tongue down, my ankle is still rubbed raw. I really shouldn't have to bandage my ankle in order to run comfortably. Please change the tongue so I can get my favorite running shoes back.

The shoe is very comfortable but the new tongue design is terrible. Too sharp

I have loved the Torin for years wearing it through many half and full marathons. First, the tongue is AWFUL - it slices into my ankles and I have to make sure my socks protect my skin. I cut it down a bit which helps, but I shouldn't have to. PLEASE fix the design flaw and give us a new model to love again. Second, the Torin 5 is a little tighter across the toe box. Not the inside but rather the tightness of the fabric over my toes. I've had a lot more issues bumping my toes against the top of the shoes causing black toenails.

I love my Altra's! I have the Loan Peak for work and trail running and bought the Torin for road running. They are extremely comfortable and give me the perfect amount of support! The only downfall is the tongue of the shoe. It dig into my ankle and has caused me to bleed. I'm trying to just hold up and hope my ankle forms a callous there. Otherwise I highly recommend the brand and the Torin for road running!

I always order 1 size bigger than my normal shoe size. That part is fine, but something about the materials used to make this shoe is a little too soft in the toe box area where the toe bumper is. I can feel it during all of my runs and it’s incredibly annoying. The rest of the shoe is comfortable, so I’m just dealing with it. The Altra Torin 4 was the best shoe. Why did they change it ? The photo I included shows how the toe bumper is so apparent compared to the rest of the shoe.

I wish the tongue on these did not cut into my ankle! Within the first 5 steps I had to take them off! Come on, Altra. You had a good thing going, don't ruin it!

This is my fourth pair of Torins. Like many other reviewers, I found that the latest changes to the Torin are largely negative. With prior Torins, I was able to size up and comfortably fit my orthotics into the shoe. With this version, however, the top of the shoe feels a lot tighter, and the compression makes my foot problems (I'm a former dancer so Morton's neuroma plus some other issues) really flare. To be clear, it's not that the toe box is too narrow, or that I've got the wrong size. Rather the uppers seem much more snug. Like others, I wish Torin 4.5 plush were still available. Looking forward to seeing these issues remedied in the next version.

Love the shoe- hate the tongue. Too thin, hard, and sharp. Looks like this is the majority rule. Bring back the padded tongue.

I have worn Altra Torin exclusively for the last few years. These are not as cushioned as the 4.5, and the tongue is awful. I'm looking for a new shoe.

Loved the feel of my foot in the shoe but when I walked, the shoe came up too high on my ankles and rubbed them. Very uncomfortable and I don't think it would go away. I have wanted this shoe for a long time and hoping next edition will fit my foot better. I'm sticking with Brooks Ghost, my go to shoe.

I have run in Altras for many years and many models. The tongue on the Torin 5 is horrid. I did a break in run and made sure to have quarter crew socks on as I had read the reviews. Had no problems. Wore this morning with shorter running socks and came back with bloody ankles! I normally run in ankle socks - and have many pairs of good running socks all ankle that I don't want to have to switch just for one poor product design. Altra! What can be done??
Also to note, I've had a similar tongue on other altras but never had this issue present so badly!

Have returned this style because I mistook the "w" in my older pair for wide, when it meant women's. So selecting wide in this was too wide. Spot at the outside close to ankle felt a tiny bit tight. I have two pair from the past, different styles and have really liked them. Am purchasing another pair.

After years of searching for comfortable shoes, I was introduced to Torin for women. It was terrific and I felt like I was walking on comfortable pillows. I recently bought the Women's Torin 5. It fits but the soft cushioning is gone. I may need to buy insoles to make them as comfortable as they used to be. For the price, I should not need to buy insoles. Bring back the soft cushioning!

I love the Torins I bought in 2020. And the new pair seems the same in every respects except 1: The tongue is SO STIFF that it cuts into the top of my foot/ankle. I have to wrap the edge of my ankle sock around it to keep it from rubbing a blister. Let's go back to the soft tongue, Altra! And while we're at it, what about a fixed tongue that doesn't slide right or left all the time? Just a thought.

Although these shoes fit great, the tongue is stiff and pokes into the upper foot causing discomfort. Also, the picture makes these shoes look almost white, when in fact they are not even gray. They are more of a light sage green color that doesn't go with anything.

So, I read the reviews and decided to buy anyway because I lived the 4.5. The reviews are real! The soles feel great but who on earth designed these shoe tongues! They literally cut my skin after a 3 mile run the soles feel good so I might get a pair of scissors and modify them. Leopards ate my face = read the reviews and thought I knew better

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the majority of the other reviews. I sadly had to return these because of the uncomfortable tongue. It’s really a shame, too, because in every other aspect, I suspect these would’ve been the best running shoes I’ve ever owned. Hopefully Altra will take into consideration the info provided by these reviews and make some changes to the tongue design.

The black and orange part of the sole started to peel from the shoe, which causes it to catch on items. Potential fall hazard. I purchased it on June 12th and at the beginning of September the sole started to catch on the floor mats at work. I only wear these at walk work, not in the garden or to run outdoors. Shoes should have lasted much longer for the cost of the shoe.

Picked these up at my local running store to replace my Torin Plushs (which I really miss!). The shoe is good and I've had some good runs in them, but even after hours of running THE TONGUE IS AWFUL!!! I'm not sure why Altra made this change, but please don't make a model with this tongue again. Before every run I have to fold it over on itself and tuck it under my shoe laces so it doesn't rub against my ankle. On one run it popped up on one side and I ended up with an inch long gash from the tongue rubbing my ankle.
Other than the tongue, I love the shoe. But I'm not jumping around to recommend this model to people.

The tongue is just as the other reviewers have mentioned: super uncomfortable and stiff. In trying the shoes on and walking for a couple minutes around my house, they left marks on my ankles.
I loved every other aspect of this shoe, but just couldn’t make them work.

Ouch... that's one nasty tongue. The shoe feels nice on step in, but the upper is too loose around the midfoot. The fabric folds and there is very little support in the upper to keep the foot stable on the platform. Fix the tongue, tighten up the midfoot fit and make it a little more supportive, and it would be a really nice shoe.

After being a Mizuno running shoe loyalist for over 10 years, I wanted to try a shoe with a bigger toe box. The Torin 5 was a great fit in the store for me. They felt a bit less shock absorbent than I was used to, but was willing to give it a try.
Unfortunately, after just 2-3 weeks of running in them, the soles are already separating from the shoe which has never happened to me with Mizuno. Considering this shoe was significantly more expensive and began breaking down within 50 miles of taking them out of the box, I can't say they are worth it. Such a shame since the fit of the shoe was excellent for me.

I really wanted to love this shoe, as I loved the Torin 4.5 Plush, and thought this would be perfect now that it comes in wide. However, the cushion is not as good as the Plush, and these don't last nearly as long. The Plush lasted a solid 6 months (running about 35 miles a week), and this one lasted barely even two months. Basically, make the 4.5 plush in a wide and I'd be thrilled.
