The shoe has a horrible flaw. The tongue is too long and too sharp. I was so disappointed. I have cuts on both feet in front at the ankle. Broke the skin on my right foot. This was a 5 mile run. I came home and read the reviews. I saw where many people cut the tongue. I folded it over and sewed it ( Not easy) That worked this morning for my 11 mile- though I wore a higher sock and put a bandaid over the cut. What a terrible thing to do to a good shoe.

As mentioned by many others - the tongue is too stiff and sharp. The tongue on the 4.5 was also annoying, but it was thin enough that after breaking it in for a while it no longer bothered me. Although I did have to wear higher socks. But the 5 - OMG it's longer and thicker. Why?? I would have returned them, but I need the cushioned mid foot for the bone spur in my toe. So I've cut the tongues. They're still annoying, but I think with thicker socks they'll work. But I don't like having to cut my brand new running shoes. Did anyone test run in these??Please go back to the tongue on any of the previous Altra Torins. Please. Otherwise this is my last pair of Altras. I'll have to find another brand.

I immediately noticed the sharp tongue, but decided buying higher socks took care of that issue. The other issue i have is that I had to go up 1/2 size in order to fit and the fit seems narrower than the previous version. I had 3 pairs of the 4.5's and loved them, only bought these when I could not get the 4.5's anymore.

This model does not have enough cushioning for me. The front of my foot hurt after wearing these.

I was hoping that the reviews regarding the tongue were not true but I ran 10 miles in them today and have a blister on the anterior ankle from the sharp stiff tongue. this irritated my extensor tendon and caused me pain over the top of my foot. I am returning them as they won’t work for me.

I have Altra trail running shoes that I love and when my local running store stopped carrying my usual running shoe brand, I found that the Torin 5 was the best comparable shoe with a lot of things I like (not much drop, wide toe box, etc.). I cannot understand the tongue material and am super disappointed. I ended up with a bloody ankle after my first run. I like so many other aspects of how they felt while running that I plan to just cut the tongue and hope it doesn't lead to other issues. I do not like the peach color but it was the only color available at the store. If Altra were to fix the tongue and keep everything else the same (and maybe have a better color choice) I'd likely buy another pair but I will never buy another pair of shoes with that stiff, thin material.

So I would agree with many others here as someone who is a big Altra fanthe 5s are not as good as the 4.5s that's for sure. I really loved the 4.5s and was hopeful for the 5. Really wanted to love them, but not so much. Would love to see a return to the 4.5!! The tongue issue resolved pretty quickly for me and I do remember that a bit with the 4.5, but overall the 5s don't stack up as well.

I was a loyal Paradigm runner for years, but the 5 has an awful fit this year, so I tried the Torin 5. There are many reasons to love this shoe: fantastic forefoot room, vibrant colors, skinny laces, perfect amount of cushion. But that TONGUE! Ran a total of 16 miles over two runs. First 8 miles and I got blisters where the tongue rubbed my ankle. By the time I drove home, my ankles hurt so bad it hurt to stand in the shoe. I did wear low profile socks. Second run I wore higher socks (which I hate) and still got rubbing, though not as bad. Still bad enough to feel through the sock. I've read where some people are cutting the tongue down. I just can't see doing that on a brand new pair of shoes with the price being what it is. I really wanted to love them. I love Altra shoes. I had to return them. On the plus side, Altra customer service is absolutely first rate!

I liked the torin 4.5 so much better. These run small and the tongue is like glass. Not as comfortable as the 4.5 and I have had at least 5 pair!

I love how these shoes feel when I run very comfortable in the foot. But the tongue is so rough and uncomfortable, I have to higher socks to keep the tongue from rubbing my ankles raw! Please redesign the tongue!

Wish they wouldn't have changed the style. The tongue on the shoe rubs the bottom of my leg raw while running.

I bought these shoes because they had a wide option. The end of the tongue is very sharp and digs into my skin. I can't wear them without socks or even with short socks. I had to cut the tongue off.

Like other reviewers, the tongue SUCKS. Ran only 3 miles and it cut into my ankle causing a scab and now scar. Tongue is 1 star, comfort is 5 stars. You shouldn't have to wear bandaids or tall socks to prevent rubbing and chafing. After 2 months of running, the tongue has softened, but not really ideal or worth it. * They got the color schemes right love my dusty pinks!

To keep this brief, I love these shoes except for the tongue on this version is horrendous. I actually have a cut on my left ankle from where it has cut me. That is my only complaint but it is major. Did anyone test these?

Trust the younger comments! The shoe is comfortable, it's adorable (pink w/orange laces). The youngest appears flexible. It cuts into your ankle.

I have been wearing the 4.5 Torins and absolutely love them. I ordered 2 pair of the 5.0 because of the great colors. They fit completely different. I wore one pair and now I am stuck with them. Sent other back. Wish is had never ordered them and that 4.5 was still available.

I read the reviews, but wanted to try anyway. The tongue rubbed my right ankle raw on a 2.5 mile run. Left is fine. Not sure what that's all about, but I came back to the reviews to see what others are doing about the tongue. Come on Altra... let us test your prototypes next time. It's a shame to have such a glaring issue in such an otherwise great shoe. Now what am I going to do?!?!

I love altra torin I have several pair. I love this color and of course they are super comfortable but I had to return them because the tongue is so stiff after walking in the hospital for 12 hrs I had raw places on the top of both feet where the tongue rubbed. I hope next version is better. I will definitely buy them if the tongue is fixed. Altria's are the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn.

Love the shoe except the tongue too stiff digs into your ankle and hurts. I pinned the tongue back with a safety pin so I could wear them because everything else about them feels great.

Run about 45-50 miles a week. Love the torin 4. The Torin 4.5 is ok. Not as comfortable as the 4. Tongue bothers my foot. Not even going to try the 5 because of the reviews I've been reading about the tongue. Also the price is more than the torin 4.5

I love Altra shoes and recommend them to everyone, but the Torin 5 is a let-down. The previous versions of Torin and Torin Plush are my favorite Altra shoes ever, and I've owned over 12 different pairs of Altras. These Torin 5's seemed to fit well, but the volume of the toe box was a problem for me. Particularly the height of the toe box. The ridge of the toe cap was putting pressure on my big toes. I literally put these shoes on, took two steps, and immediately took them back off because I knew they wouldn't work. I didn't even notice the rigid tongue, because I was so bothered by hard ridge created by the toe cap. It was almost like my toe nail was catching on it as I walked. Maybe jumping up another half size would help, but I had already sized up a half size from my regular size. I liked the feel of the shoe otherwise. The heel seemed to be a better fit than the 4.5s, less sloppy.

The shoe itself is great. Very supportive and comfortable. But the tongue is hard and stiff. Trying to see if it can be broken in. Not sure why Altra did this to the tongue.

I'm a very big Altra fan and loved my Torin 4. But I feel compelled to warn people that for some reason on the 5s, they changed the tongue into a stiff, almost plastic feeling material that cut into the front of my ankle leaving a sore. On my second outing, I thought putting a band-aid on might help, but the tongue took that off within the first .1 mile. So I was stopping every minute to tuck the tongue into the laces. I have no idea why this was thought of as a good material for a shoe. I'll keep trying to figure out a workaround as the Torin has just the right amount of padding that I need for a good run, but I sure hope they change this up for the next model.

Ah, Altra, how you trick me yet again. This new iteration of the Torin is even worse than the last. It is narrower, tighter across the top of the foot, and the tongue is awful. I have to wear quarter crew socks to keep the weird length and plasticky tongue from rubbing my ankle raw. The forefoot is without a doubt narrower or lower, as my feet felt the pressure in about 3 miles. No new shoe that claims to be a cushioned model should have that happen, tbh.

I was so excited about this shoe until I ran in it. I loved the Torin 4 and went through several pairs. It was a lovely shoe. My only complaint was that it only lasted at best 300 miles for me. The new 5 fits great in the heel but is bulkier in the toe box. I'm ok with the non- padded tongue it actually makes the shoe cooler and being a southerner that is a plus - however it could be shorter so I don't have to wear the quarter height socks or put glide on my ankles. The cushion in the forefoot area seems to be missing. One of the nice features of the 4 was the ribbon on the tongue that the laces wove through. I never had to worry about the tongue sliding to one side. That was a great feature and I even wrote Altra customer service to compliment it - so the shoe engineers removed it. Here's a thought guys: Webster's is full of words when you redesign a shoe don't try to sucker us in by giving it the same name use a different name and keep making the old shoe. Runners are suckers to try new shoes if we like the new ones we will quit buying the old and then if you see the demand dry up you can discontinue the old model. I'm a loyal Altra wearer. I've had the Paradigm, the Duo, the Torin and I've returned the Torin plush and the Riviera. The Riviera was the only Altra to give me a blister. So, stop, think and refocus.
