CHANGED THE TONGUE DESIGN DRASTICALLY!!!! Feels like a razor blade cutting into my ankle. The sides are higher and thicker, In addition on the inside heel the size plasic sticker that cannot be removed is so obnoxious and I can still feel it through thick socks. The forefoot feels hard and strange also. Also heavier. Wow,,,why change a good thing if you just wanted to create a whole new shoe! HATE THEM!!!
Disappointed,

I am on a new foot health journey and this is my first pair of Altra. I knew when trying them on that the tongue may be an issue, but I liked them enough to go for it. It doesn't really bother me unless my sock is too low. I've heard that some are cutting the tongue, but I sewed it instead and it works great (see picture).
I am not a runner, just like walking. Oh and the toe box is great!

These would have been my 3rd pair of Altras and I am so sad I have to send them back. Why they made the tongue of this shoe out of such a hard material is beyond me. It cuts right into my ankle. So sad because the rest of the shoe is great. Altra needs to take another look at their design here because from the reviews Ive read it seems to be a problem a lot of people are complaining about.

I waited forever to get these, even trying trail shoes in between pairs while I waited for the 5 to come out (I've been running in Torins for years, and no other shoes work for me). The tongue issue is real - it is absolutely awful. I had to cut the tongues on expensive brand-new shoes in order to continue wearing them, even with higher socks. I had painful cuts that took forever to heal. The auto-response saying to "lace them up all the way to avoid the tongue issue" is not only insulting, but it's inaccurate; it helps not one iota. Please go back to the old tongue style, or at the very least use a soft material (I've had this type of tongue before from other brands that were not at all a problem with better materials). There's just no good reason for this shoddy design did no one test these?

The tongue edge is sharp and cuts into the ankle :( I have areas of bruising and denuded skin from a short 3 mile break-in run with this new pair. I told the company and they are aware but said it didn't fall under warrantee because it's a design flaw not manufacturing defect. I love Altra! I'm a loyal fan for 5 years but this shoe let me down. The fit is small so had to go up a half size so try them on in a store before assuming that they will fit like past models. The ankle pad is thick and rides up near the lateral ankle a bit. Love that they went back the original upper. The footbed has the right amount of cushion. Company says if I trim the edge of the tongue I will void the warranty. Sigh :( If you buy these- wear high socks!

My previous Altras were Torin 4 plush, and hands down my favorite shoe. When I received my new Torin 5's I was surprised how short the shoe was. I called customer service before exchanging and was told because these are more plush they run small. I went up half a size and they fit perfectly. Next to my old 4's they are practically the same.

My fourth pair of Torins and I am disappointed to reinforce other reviews about the change to the tongue of this shoe. The plastic material is very uncomfortable. You must wear a high sock.

This is easily the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn.
I did feel the tongue was a little stiff at first, but I haven't had any of the issues that I have seen in the other reviews.
I bought these shoes in June, and I have been wearing them every day, and they are going strong. I work 12 hour shifts at work where I am running stock all day, and I impressed with the durability. I actually bought another pair as back up for when these wear out.
The only thing is I dislike the color.
Why on earth can't Altra make a nice black shoe for ladies who don't want pastels or bright colors.
They must think all ladies love teal or various shades thereof.
Note: not all women like teal or rasberry or pastel shades.

I read the bad reviews, and I folded the tongue under immediately when I bought them. I'm over 300 miles in with no issues. The 0 drop and wide toe box are exactly what my 40 year old feet and Morton's Neuroma needed. I love these shoes and I pick them over the row of Saucony's on my shelf. Will be buying again soon.

Read the reviews about the tongue and what a bunch of baloney. Popped my feet into my Torin 5s and ran partly road and partly trail for 5 miles and what a great run! More cushion than the 4.5s and lighter uppers and a tad more toe room makes for a great shoe! Bravo! The tongue molds to your foot and is lightweight so no issue. Especially if you have bunions, the go to shoe!

When I heard Altra was phasing out the Torin, I switched to trying other shoes (alternate brands and alternate models). The Torin plush was not my jam. My shoe journey led to plantar fasciitis. I went to my local running store to exchange a pair of Hoka's that I thought was contributing and behold the sales rep brought out the new Altra Torin for me to try. This was not even on my radar as I assumed they were discontinued.
They are amazing. Everything is better. The only minor thing I would tweak is to add longer laces. I prefer to lace all the way up and triple knot for runs. It is doable with the current laces, but only by a short margin. The shoes also feel 1/2 size small (length) to me so I sized up from a 7 to 7.5 and problem solved.
The shoes are beautiful, I want every color! The cushioning is perfect like a pillow. The toe box is glorious and wide. The width is perfect - unlike the provision which feel quite narrow. I have not tried them in the rain yet, but even the sole grip feels better than the prior models which for me slipped on wet pavement.
Looking forward to many miles in these and hoping to run my first marathon in them.
Thank you, thank you Altra!!!

Bought same brand-Torin- as my first pair years ago. The first pair were excellent with great foot support and arch support and made with good material. I also loved them for the box toe as I have wide feet. The recent Altra sneakers were poor quality. The tongue of the sneaker has no cushioning at all and is made out of very thin plastic. Yes, plastic-that dug into my ankles. Didn't want to bother with returning so cut down top of tongue with scissors (which was very easy to do since material is paper thin) so I can wear them. Altra's are expensive. Will never buy again.

If you don't like these Torins please don't buy them. I will buy them all. I like the lighter tongue. I like the shorter shoelaces. I love the cushioning and the feel of the upper material. Yes it is not as wide as previous Torins but still wider toe box than most brands. I am a women runner since 1975. I can't run like I use to but because of altras I still can. Sometimes you just have to put in longer shoestrings and toe guards!!

Altra sent me a pair of the Torin 5 to test out in exchange for my honest review & I gotta say, I'm really impressed with them. When I first opened the box, I was a little wary. As a minimalist runner, they looked like a whole lot more shoe than I'm used to. But once I took them for a spin I WAS HOOKED. These babies are light & fast! They feel good whether I'm running behind the stroller, cutting through the grass or doing speed work on the track.
Don't let that plush outsole fool you. The Torin's will not weigh you down. Plus, it's so bouncy! The return on each step is wonderful, but I still have plenty of feeling underfoot like a true minimalist shoe. I love the Foot Shape technology, especially as a woman with a narrow heel but wide forefoot. Thank you pregnancy for making my feet wider. I was sizing up in other brands to counter this, since my feet aren't actually wide enough to buy a wide shoe. It's so tricky to find shoes that are the right fit, but the Torin's fit the bill & I didn't have to size up to get the fit I wanted!
Long story short: Torin 5 = excellent road shoe for all you mother runners, especially those who's feet grew a little bit during pregnancy!

I loved my torin 4 and hoping these felt the same way. They don't. I don't have issue in the heel as others said but the toe box upper shoe is looser for me than the 4, and it is 1/2 size shorter. The cushion and run feels similar except in toe area being shorter.
Now the tongue - it comes up to high. Having read the reviews I decided to try but took time to roll tongue away from ankle several times to soften and create a natural curve out - maybe did the trick cause after 3 runs in these no blister or rubbing. But inside the shoe lace cross through the tongue and the laces goes inside and creates a bump that sits in your foot. I have a natural bump right in that spot and a short run rubbed there. I unlaced there and that solved the problem.
I will keep - even with shorter I did 2 hr run and no major issues - just don't like all room above my toes different than Torin 4 and fabric gaps - feels less secure. Not the worst, not the best. Gonna have to find a new favorite shoe

This was my 3rd pair of Altra Torins, I went through two pairs of Torin 4 and wore them out over time so decided to go with the Torin 5s. The 4's had a wider toe box and overall a great running shoe with lots of support and space. The 5's changed alot, more narrow, the tongue is absolutely terrible since it would dig into your foot. I ended up cutting the tongue to try to help, still bad. Laces are oddly short as well. Overall not nearly as comfortable as Torins use to be, dissapointed.

I liked the look of these a lot. However, the tongue is made of a harder material (plastic like) and it rubs into the leg even when just trying them on. It would definitely have been painful to try to run or work out in these.

After owning and running ragged several pairs of the Torin Plush 4, I was forced into the 4.5. Altra went the wrong direction with the Torin Plush 4.5 and has completed ruining the line with the 5. The plush feel is completely absent and it's now just another overpriced shoe with a disaster of a tongue. Weirdly also, my sizing has increased by a half size. I have returned the 5s I just purchased and ran an underwhelming non-cushioned 10k in (the outsole is also showing wear already too). Honestly feels equal to an entry-level hard gel Asics with the cushioning or lack thereof. I'm absolutely gutted this shoe has been ruined. I feel the prices on the internet still listing the 4.5 at full retail back up my review. I did return to the store and tried on all the Altras...only to reluctantly switch back to Hoka. Reluctant because Topos, our only other zero-drop option, are so hard to find (let alone try on). In short Altra, the Torin Plush 4 was already so very close to perfection. Sure the outsole showed wear after just one 5k but it was PLUSH and it did not try to save weight with the sharp tongue. EgoMax is terrible and does not compare to the cush of Quantic. Surely someone tried it on before the green light?

Thoroughly disappointed. I was looking forward to a comparable replacement for my favorite Torin 4.
I have arthritis in my toes/feet and found comfort in Altra's Intuition years ago, which allowed me to run pain free. Unfortunately they were discontinued (probably to satisfy those who complained about shoe's esthetics). I am not into esthetics, as comfort is my only priority. Finally found the ultimate shoe for me, the Torin 4 (not Plush) which met all my needs. Once again Altra discontinue it.
Why is Altra constantly changing a truly good thing? Do you not put any worth into customers comments? Seems your design staff is forgetting why customers purchase Altra. We love the wider toe box. Get back to basics and what customers who buy Altra want and need. Remember your "story" and what made you stand out from your competitors.
Where do I start..the Torin 5 ran much narrower in toe box, extra support piece on front top exterior made for an uncomfortable and tighter fit leaving no room for toes. Also felt 1/2 shorter in length. While just wearing around house for several days experienced many hot spots. Thought about ordering Rivera but worried as some comments stated narrow and not following natural shape of foot. Sorry to say I will have to look elsewhere for my next shoe.

I went through a few pairs of the Torin 5 and just moved on to the Torin 6. My only complaint is the shoe laces are too long. The shoe is great. Minimal but perfect cushion. Great wide toe box. Tan ten miles after trying them on and no blisters or break in necessary.

Worn Torin 5 for 6+ months. They are super. Comfortable, helpful in foot rehab. Wish you didn't discontinue for model 6 - which are unwearable. I walk right out of the lower profile. Disappointed.

I was skeptical bc of the reviews but as someone who has plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon pain, and arthritis that causes inflammation and edema in weird places on my toes
These are my favorite shoes. Normally I need a lot of padding but these are comfortable and I don't have soreness from running.
Con! The tongue cutting you is a thing unfortunately but once they're broken in, it gets fixed. I just wore long socks or sucked it up. I didn't bleed but it did"cut" me

I have arthritic feet with deformation and these shoes have the shape I need the most. I could use a slighter wider toe base but I have three pairs now. I walk and walk and these work best so far.
