Mine got like 450 miles on them and they still look not half bad.
Good lacing design.

These are great. First Altras wide enough for my feet. Shaved seconds off my pace! Only downside is the rigid tongue hurts with low-cut socks.

This is my first Altra athletic shoe and I'm not disappointed. Overall the shoe fits well and is comfortable. I wear them as a daily work shoe not as a running shoe although I do jog in them occasionally. The only concern I have is they feel a bit short in the same size I order in other brands and the tongue can irritate your ankle. Fix the tongue and order a 1/2 size up and you're Golden!

I love this shoe, it is perfect in every aspect besides its durability. Two weeks after use and the soles start peeling off. So unfortunate for such a forward thinking idea.

This is my second pair of Altra shoes. My first pair were the lone peak 5s for the trails. After trying the Lone Peaks out I was intrigued to try an Altra road shoe. I think these Torin 5s feel great. I currently have a little over 50 miles on my pair, and the outsole and mid sole seem to be holding up pretty well for me. For reference, I am 5'9" and 170lb. There is no creasing in the midsole and the outsole has barely any noticeable wear so far. The midsole feels comfortable, well cushioned and resilient. These shoes are also reasonably light for the amount of cushion we are getting. The tongue of the shoe has not been much of an issue for me. I wear short socks and, I just pull my socks up a little bit above where the tongue lies on my ankle so the tongue is not rubbing on my skin. Everyone seems to really complain about the tongue, and all you have to do is pull your socks up a little bit, and problem solved. Personally I like a stripped back light weight tongue so the shoe is lighter in weight. I also really like the upper material. The upper is very comfortable and light. I also, really like how the heel counter does not have much structure and is pliable. In the past I have had problems with other shoes brands that have ridged heel counters giving me heal pain. I love the extra space in the toe box compared to pretty much every other shoe company. I run a lot and my toes have been getting really wrecked from my previous shoes not giving my toes enough space. But, with these Torins, my toes are feeling much better, and my toe nails are finally healing. I have been adjusting to the zero drop, and I am really starting to enjoy the feeling of a zero drop shoe. The zero drop is making me really focus on my form and is making me a better, stronger runner, which is something I think all runners are striving for. As I mentioned this shoe is reasonably light, so when I want I can pick up the pace with ease. But when I am feeling beat up I can also run at an easy pace in this shoe no problem. Bottom line is, I think this is a great shoe so far.

This is probably my 7th pair of Altras and this is the first time that size 13 is way off on size. After my first short run I have a hot spot on top of my little toe due to being crowded in the toe box. Since there are no half sizes after 12.5 I am going to try the 14s and hope it does not feel like running in clown shoes.
The tongue of the shoe feels like its made of a soft but stiff plastic and it rubbed a small spot on my ankle raw. I am sure that will break in or can be trimmed, so not a big deal, just something to account for on initial break in time.
Ultimately if you were a Torin 4 fan then this is the shoe for you. The run feel is exactly what I expected and what I want and need. I am a larger runner and like the extra cushion and cannot find any other shoe to fit my Flintstone foot build.
Recommendation: Sell shoes, Left & Right, individually. My left foot is 1/2 size larger and my arch is also a half or more size forward compared to my right foot, thus causing me to purchase a shoe a half size larger to accommodate. Now I am going to go up one size to fit my left foot, while i suspect my right shoe will need some creative lacing to keep my foot in place.
I would love to buy, in this case, a size 14 for left and 13 for right.

Ilikethe new Torin. I don't know why Altra keeps changing this shoe every year. I want a familiar shoe I can rely on year after year. I loved the 3.0 and the 4.5. I wish you guys would stay with something like that.

Love that this shoe now comes in a wide width. This shoe would have been perfect if not for the tongue. Upon ankle flex, the fairly rigid tongue digs in and breaks the skin. Hoping a quarter or crew sock will alleviate the issue. Also hoping that the next iteration features a traditional tongue or one more flexible.

the shoe is similar to the old version. the new tongue is a big step back. had to trim the top back to avoid cutting into my ankle.

I love the way this shoe fits. However, the front toe should be reinforced inside the shoe. I have had two pairs of them and both times my toe had come through the woven toe area. Altra should consider putting a strip of material inside so the look of the sneaker isn't changed but the durability of the shoe is better.

I used to be a long time Altra dude, but recently switched to Topo, since Altra seemed to be falling behind in terms of innovation. At any rate, a fellow runner recommended the Torin 5, and I decided to give it a try. For the record, I run more than 1,000 miles a year, and I easily burn through 3 or 4 pairs of sneakers a year.
The Torin 5 is definitely an improvement compared to my last pair of Altras (Escalante racer). It's plush, but at the same time responsive, which was a bit of a surprise to me. After reading several reviews, I ended up sizing half a size up, and that was the right thing to do.
The shoe has an ample toebox, but not as ample as the Altras of yore. Still, there is plenty of room for the toes to spread. The heel construction locks your foot in place, it's nicely done.
The shoe is very light, which is nice, and the upper provides good ventilation even during the Texas summer. I can't speak for durability, since I only have 50 miles on the shoe, but everything seems to be holding up with no problems. I'm anticipating to get 400 to 500 miles on them before they go to shoe heaven (walking duty).
Now the negatives: minor one, the shoelaces are short; major one, the tongue design sucks. You can't wear them with no-show socks, the tongue will do quite a bit of damage to your skin. Even with socks, I had to fold and hold the tongue in place for a couple of days with a clothespin to "break" it before I could run on those shoes. I heard of people who fold and stitch the tongue or even cut it, but the fold-and-hold trick + socks did it for me.
It's a nice shoe, but I'm not sure I would buy it again. I think I like the one I had before (Topo Cyclone) better.
I'd also recommend:

Great shoe. But cut the tongue off and sew it shut. Yes, Altra should have done this for you. But they didn't. Maybe on the Torin 5.5. Altra: just make it like the Paradigm's tongue. Otherwise, awesome shoe. Love it.

I previously gave 5 stars on this shoe because along with the Lone Peak 5, it's a great fit in a Men's 10 wide for a WOMEN'S WIDE FOOT. After wearing it for a half day I realized it's not the same fit as the 10 wide Lone Peak 5. After speaking with customer service I was informed that these run a 1/2 size small. I will be exchanging for the 10.5 wide size. Thank you Altra for your awesome customer service.

Shoes feel good and do everything the 4.5's do. There is a cushion on the bottom of the tongue, I trimmed the edge of the tongue just to the cushion seam, about 1/4", no problems now.

Wide sizes!!!! Finally.after a few years of narrower and narrower shoes from Altra.
The Torin 5 wide is close to perfection. The only quibble I have is the cushioning. It's a bit on the firm side, almost like a racing flat. The cushioning in the old Torins felt way more plush for long mileage.

In a lot of ways this is the Altra I've been waiting for. My feet are very wide but not flat, very hard to fit, and I've always liked Altra's toe box...but the mid-foot of many models tended to be too low-volume for me. As others have noted, the fit of newer Altras have been trending towards less width and volume. The wide width fixes that problem, and these felt like a dream right out of the box. I haven't run any significant distance in these yet, but on the short runs I've done they feel both perfectly natural and gloriously cushioned. Yay!
But. What the heck is up with that tongue? That thin, rigid edge is a serious irritant. Yeah, if you wear higher socks its less of an issue, although I can still feel it poking me. But for people that prefer low or no-show socks - what, are they supposed to buy a whole new set of socks to accommodate the ridiculous design flaw of their otherwise awesome new shoes? Love the shoes, but minus a star for that dumb tongue.

To get the most out of this shoe, you may want to size up 1/2 a size. Aside from that, you can expect the same amount of roomy comfort you'd expect from an Altra toe box. I see a lot of reviews about the tongue causing issues, and yea when I first put the shoe on it was one of the first things I noticed. But after locking the shoe down, the tongue laid flat on the top of my foot and I didn't give it a second thought. Running still felt pretty snappy and responsive and after my stride opened up after the first couple miles in them they just became more and more comfortable. I can't wait to take them out again!

I wore normal socks (not cut off at ankle) and the tongue was fine. Shoe feels great, the extra bit of stack height from the Torin 4 makes easy days a lot more comfortable. Can't give a 5 since I've only run once in them and I don't know how durable they will be.

These shoes in a D width fit better than the 4E width I normally buy in other brands. Great fit and outstanding cushioning.
I knocked off one star due to the unconventional tongue having a stiff sharp edge that bites into the top front of my
foot. I had to wrap it in foam, and it's fine now. But don't let that scare you away from otherwise perfect shoes.

I'm not runner, I'm a walker so the tongue does not bother me but I could see how it could bother a runner. My toes go all the way to the end of the shoe, I usually have about 1/2in at the end so that's a little weird. But I LOVE this shoe! SO comfortable!

Run roads. Very comfy shoe for a zero drop. Some getting used to. Love wide toe box for sure. Tongue rubs but getting used to that too. First run blistered my heel but no more. Light, good looking shoe. I got blue. Good cushion.

I've been running exclusively in Torins for the last ~5 years, and often recommended them, but this is the first version I have felt compelled to review. What I am most impressed by is the ride. They are super comfortable, but still responsive: on my very first run, with no break-in time, my feet and legs felt great the entire time, even though I've been having a rough summer, frankly, with foot / leg pain on my old Torin 4s at not even 200 miles.
I'm just amazed by the new sole. The only reason I gave it a 4, and not a 5, is a) the sharp tongue is, as others have written, a weird choice (my socks are just high enough to not be affected, but it is weird), b) they do seem to run a little smaller than past torins, and c) I think the colorways are mediocre at best.
But in terms of the way it felt when I ran? The best ever by far.

This new Torin comes in two widths, normal and wide. I needed to go half size up and the Wide size to be comfortable with the "old Altra" feel. My little toes were painful after running in the Normal width. The tongue issue is a non-issue if you lace up all the way, but the laces are a tad short when you do that. A good shoe but need to go half-size up and get the Wide if you want the "old Altra" feel.
