The new Torin 5’s are unfortunately not an improvement over the 4.5. For some strange reason Altra redesigned the tongue to make it dig into the front of your ankle. (See picture). I’m keeping them because they’re still incredibly cushioned - but that tongue is getting the scissor treatment. Also, the 5’s run 1/2 size shorter.

First off I really like this shoe. I have to admit that comments on the stiffness of the tongue are not exaggerated. I can'f fathom why the didn't give it a more sensible tongue like the lone pine.
For me, the tongue is not a deal breaker... but that is because I have run shoes with stiff tongues before and I have learned to deal with it. Very annoying though to be sure.
I would recommend this shoe for runners looking for a zero drop minimalist shoe.

The tongue is ridiculously stiff. I love every other aspect of the shoes. I am not sure if I am keeping or returning.

I love this band of sneaker and wore my previous Torin sneaker out. This pair is a good replacement but the top of the tongue is very stiff and when I wear ankle socks, it cuts into my foot. I hope it will eventually will soften up but my prior pair did not have this issue. No complaints except the tongue - the neutral sneaker works great for feeling stable when walking or running.

I just wish that Altra knew that Torin is still their staple instead of throwing so much attention to its Escalante sibling. Hands down, the Torin is the best of multiple worlds for a running shoe (lightweight + cushion + neutral + foot shape). Anyhow, the tongue is stiff like others have mentioned, but not totally unbearable. It eventually breaks in, but isn't exactly comfortable even after breaking in. It is definitely something that Altra should fix in future versions of the Torin. Side note: I really wish Altra would re-introduce the racing versions of the Torin (the NYC one was still the best shoe ever made. Please, please, please throw some love on your eldest of shoes :)

Enjoyed everything about this shoe except that the toe box is shorter than anticipated. I am a normal 13 in all my other running shoes but had to go up to a 14 for the Torin. Fixed the problem and road running with no problem.

This might be the most comfortable running shoe I've ever worn! Unfortunately, the right shoe developed a tear after the first run.

Comfy but a bit tight. i normally wear a 9 in the line peaks, but this size 9 is definitely smaller.

I have always love this shoe. This one is the best one yet for comfort and feel. The only issue is after a couple wears on the treadmill part of the sole fell off and I had to glue it back on. Hopefully I wont have anymore issues.

This is my favorite iteration of the Torin so far. The previous regular (not "plush") Torin was good for up tempo running but was too firm/hard for me for daily use. The Torin Plush, however, was far too squishy for me and something about its shape and softness seemed to force me to underpronate in a way that I usually don't. I have no such complaints about this model - it's pretty much perfect. The cushioning is more like the the previous Torin Plush than like the previous regular non-plush Torin, but the EgoMax is nice and bouncy and doesn't make me feel like I'm losing energy sinking into the shoe. The last doesn't force me to underpronate like the previous model Torin Plush did. I understand why others complain about the tongue, but it doesn't bother me. I wear regular men's quarter-height socks (not the "no show" kind) - I could feel the tongue biting into the front of my ankle a tiny bit on my first couple of runs, but now that it's broken in I no longer notice it. My only complaint is the outsole durability. The rubber is very thin and very soft, and the full-width flex grooves result in the rubber having extra edges that make it wear faster. At this point I've run 170 miles in them and the forefoot outsole is already nearly worn through in several places; I usually run about 400 miles before I see this much wear. (I have 100 miles on a pair of Paradigm 6's and the outsole still looks basically new.) The EgoMax midsole still feels nice and bouncy; I expect the outsole to render the shoe unusable long before the midsole would. I also had another pair on which the outsole began to peel off of the midsole after ~60 miles, which is ridiculous - I returned them to the place of purchase and exchanged them for the pair on which I'm basing my review comments. If these had a more durable outsole like the previous model of Torin or like the Paradigm 6, l'd give them 5 stars; I love everything else about them. For what it's worth I'm a 180 pound male who runs 30-40 miles/week at 7:30-8:00 mile pace mostly on concrete sidewalks.

I love this shoe, but from my first run I was left with a cut on my right ankle. The tongue is sharp to the bare skin. I currently have 5 pair of Altras, and love all of them, including this pair. However, I can't wear ankle socks unfortunately. Please fix the tongue on the next version. I've owned the last several versions of the Torin specifically and haven't had tongue issues before.
I had to order a half size bigger than my last model of Torin.

Love the feel of the new shoe... nicely cushioned. I would only comment on the shoe tongue- I don't particularly like the sharp ends, I prefer the soft fabric ends that don't feel as if they are cutting into your ankle.

I love Altras. I found them in the Torin 4.5 plush and ran almost 1,000 miles across two pair. I'd buy them again and again. Bought Lone Peak 4 mid mesh for hiking and they've been great. A pair of Vihos for shorter runs that have been surprisingly good for the price point.
The Torin 5's however, are just OK. The outsole is nice and sticky, the midsole is comfy, the upper breathes well, and the quality is great, but the tongue is not good at all. It's too long and rigid, and while it has indents for lower leg/ ankle anatomy, they're nowhere near where they should be and I have to push the tongue all the way to one side or another to keep them from blistering the front of my ankle. It's terrible and the reason I won't buy another pair. The laces, while not a show stopper, feel light and cheap also.
I've worn them for about 50 miles, including through 2 half marathons, and provided I work around the tongue, they're OK. I'll wear them out, but I'm hoping Altra will be on to a Torin 5.5 with an improved tongue by then; otherwise I'll have to find a new shoe.

I like the ride of this shoe, which feels very similar to the 4. Never tried the Plush model, so I can't compare to those iterations. They are more narrow in the mid foot, which is consistent throughout their newer trail shoe models as well (feels similar in width to the Timp, for example). However, the toe box is roomy enough while also feeling more snug around the mid and top of the foot. This change doesn't bother me at all, and I really liked the feel of the 4's.
It seems some customers are having problems with the new tongue design, but if you don't wear short, ankle socks this design isn't a problem at all.
My only complaint is that the new shoe strings are significantly shorter and didn't allow me to utilize the last eyelet at the top of the shoe - if you like to lace using a runners loop, I can't imagine you'd be able to with the laces they come with. I had to swap them out for the previous 4 model laces in order to use the last eyelet and get the locked in feel I wanted around the heel. This is the only reason I've given the shoe 4 out of 5 stars, and really the only reason I'm writing the review - if I didn't have the previous model, I'd I have to buy different laces, so just wanted to give a heads up.

Been an Altra fanatic ever since I was introduced the Torrin line. The Torrin 5, now in terms of the shoe itself Altra delivered yet again but failed miserably with the introduction of this new tongue. It really hurts to run, and cuts into your ankle. Thought of cutting it, but I have had to fold it over to be able to enjoy my run. Saw many other reviews stating the same, but thought maybe it was a preference thing - they were right. Altra, please plan to update by either coming up wtih something better or go back to the tongue that worked so well for so long.

The fit of the Torin 5 is perfect for my foot. Finally a Torin model that is not super wide and sloppy through the midfoot. The wide roomy toebox is so nice! The flexibility mixed with the plush cushion provides for wonderful long slow stroll! Unfortunately, they are wearing out fast. At 81 miles, I noticed that the upper is starting to tear in the same spot on both shoes I don't think they are going to make it to more than 120-130 miles. It's breaking my heart because I love the orange color and these shoe are so comfy. I want another pair but can't justify it if the upper is tearing at 80 miles. Please fix this quality problem in the next Torin and don't change anything else.

As a woman with a really wide forefoot I find it very difficult to find a shoe that is not a toe pinching nightmare. These Torin 5 shoes in a mens 7 extra wide are a blessing, very happy feet when recently traveling. I only wish they came in more colors in the extra wide width.
I would love, love it if Altra offered this same shoe in their womens shoes and in more colors.
I typically wear an 8 XW - 8 1/2 W in a womens shoe and I strive for a rounded, not pointed, toe design.

With the Footshape my feet/toes feels less tension. I expected more of a rebound from the Ego Max midsole but I think that is from not changing the way I land on the zero drop. It's hard to change old habits but committing to it. Like most reviews the tongue needs to be fixed. I just trimmed it down with scissors and that stopped the rubbing. Overall love the look and feel of the shoes.

A consistent issue I've had with altra running shoes is how quickly they wear out. I have a pair of these and I plan to buy another ( or a pair of escalates, which by far lasted the longest).
The issue is that all their shoes tear along the outside edge, center-front. Just outside the balls of my feet. Same spot on every shoe. Now, I have wide feet and I supinate so that's probably contributing, and I continue to buy altras because the zero drop is great and they are otherwise super comfy.
I just wish they didn't split along the seam after 100 miles.

Love Altra's design, and the foam for the new Torin seems to be more responsive than the previous model. The shape of the shoe does what it is designed to do: actually fit the shape of my foot. Finally, such a shoe! My one big gripe, however, is the tongue. It's just some fused synthetic material, no nice comfy tongue to make the top of your foot comfortable. And the tongue and it's top edge was/is so stiff out of the box that it literally rubbed and cut into my skin on my very first runI was bleeding! I now must wear socks that come up past my ankle to protect my skin from the rubbing and slicing that the tongue's sharp edge does to me. I'm hoping the tongue will soften up such that there is no rubbing in the future. I do think Altra should address this design element.

This is my 3rd pair of Torins. I love this shoe, it provides enough cushion for longer distance but is lightweight and let's the foot do its job.
Some issues that I have with this model are:
- change in size (all my previous models were 10, I had to switch to 10.5)
- the upper of the shoe is stiffer than usual and I have to tie it very carefully to avoid getting a pain at the top of my foot
On the plus side, compared to Torin 4.5 - the shoe feels lighter and laces are less likely to untie themselves during a run.

This is my 4th pair of Altra road shoes and my first pair of Torins. I love these shoes more than any other Altra road shoe I've owned other than the tongue. I now have scabs on the front of my ankles from the tongue rubbing. I don't have any issue when I wear at least length socks.
I really hope Altra fixes the tongue on the next version of these. It looks like they already did on the luxe and leather versions. This tongue is terrible though. It's almost as if no one even tested running any kind of distance in these with no show socks.

I use these as daily road runners. Nice but I prefer more structure in the upper (I do like the tongue) and less knit which feels like wearing a sock with a sole, and a firmer outer sole.

I'm really enjoying this shoe. The fit is almost perfect for me. The right amount of responsive cushion and support. The tongue cut my ankle so that's not awesome. I have to wear calf socks with these. I wish they would offer the Wide in more then one color. I mean who wants two or three pairs of the exact same shoes? If you go in knowing the tongue will make you bleed you won't be disappointed.
