The tongue is unforgivably bad. Cut both my ankles on the first 3 mile run. Don't want to see what would happen on a 10 miler. I don't understand how this is on store shelves.

I've been running in Altra shoes for quite a few years. I saw the negative reviews but thought "hey, they can't be that bad". I don't like changing shoes and generally stick with what works. I was wrong. They are that bad. An earlier review wondered if anyone at Altra had actually run in these shoes and I think that's a pretty legitimate question. The design of the tongue is awful. It bites, hard, into the front of your shin. I could find no way to avoid this issue. I could barely walk around the house without pain, running was out of the question. Please Altra, go back to the drawing board.

I don't know how this shoe made it into production. It's obvious that no one who works there ever tried them on and walked around in them for more than 20 minutes. If they had, they would have noticed that the tongue gradually begins to but into your skin on the front of your ankle. They are ridiculously uncomfortable, even painful. Luckily I was able to sit for long stretches, otherwise there would have been blood. Hey Altra - how about a little padding on the tongue?

First time wearing these was in the operating room and after 9 hours, I had to cut the tongue down. Now I can't return them. They were so painful. A huge waste of money.

This shoe has the foot fit and comfort I love and have come to expect from Altra, but the tongue design is mind boggling. It's hard to figure out how they got to this point without some sort of quality control kicking in. Didn't anyone try the shoes on? Super disappointed in this shoe and will definitely return.

I've worn Torins for years. The change in the tongue material was a poor decision. It cuts into the top of my foot at my ankle. I had to return them. I much prefer previous designs.

These feel like they would be great shoes if not for the thin, plastic tongue. Never have I seen such a thing on a shoe. Even with a sock underneath it, it is uncomfortable just walking around the house, no matter how the shoe is laced. Put a regular, cushioned tongue on this shoe, like any of the earlier Torins had, and I am buying them. As for this pair, they are getting returned. Altra's failing on these shoes raises serious questions about their designing and testing process.

Why is there no way to leave no stars? I had to return the first pair because they were a 1/2 size too small (even though I have several other pairs of Altra shoes in the correct size). After wearing these for two hours, the pain from the tongue digging into the front of my ankle is ridiculous. Unfortunately, I didn't bring a spare pair of shoes with me. These are terrible. Obviously no one at Altra ever tired them out. I'm just hoping they don't draw blood before I get a chance to change out of them.

I like the style and color, but holy cow the tongue is ridiculously uncomfortable. I've had them on for two hours now and the tongue is really digging into the front of my ankles. There is ZERO cushion and for some reason they put a sharp edge on the tongue. Unfortunately, I'm stuck wearing these for another couple hours until I can change shoes. Ridiculous - obviously no one at Altra ever wore them before releasing the design for manufacture. These will be returned ASAP!

I was a believer in the Altra Torin and promoted the shoe to my running friends. I noticed a difference in the 4.0 model, especially in the shoe's lacing system (plastic straps?). Regardless, I pressed on and finally invested in the 5.0. Immediately out of the box I was disappointed... did I just buy a pair of Adidas?! I tried on the shoe -- too narrow, too small and what's up with the tongue and its material. I am sending them back for a full return. What happened Altra??

If you have wide feet go for the Olympus 4. I tried both and the Torin is just not wide enough to accommodate my 4E foot.

This shoe has a lot of great points. It's light, and airy feeling, good cushion (little firm, my preference) and looks sweet. For me I found the sizing a half size too small, I've worn previous iterations of the torin. However, the tongue is very abrassive made of some rubbery vinal type material and sharp. Some reviewers have had no issue with this, but for me it makes the shoe unwarable. It created abrasion and broken skin on the top part of my ankle. If they can fix I would absolutely love this shoe.

The shoe is everything I could ever ask for, except for the tongue. I'm happy for the people that haven't experienced any issues with it, but their dismissiveness is condescending and entirely misguided. I went for a 5 mile run with normal, ankle-heigh running socks. Within the first mile my ankle started to feel raw, but by the end of 5 miles it was slightly bloody and oozing pus. It's not going to be the same for everyone, but at least be aware of the risk. I personally would stay away until the tongue is changed.

The fit feels like the old Torin 4s that were tough but these started to come apart before my first run. They didn't stand up to normal walking. Pretty disappointing from my favorite shoe company

Fit is ok. Not great. The tongue is straight ignorant though. Idk who you have designing and testing the shoes but all these shoes you currently are making are horrible. Obviously aren't listening to the customers.

Altra has betrayed their roots. All recent Altra shoes are egregiously narrow (although this narrowing trend started years ago). Altra shoes are now no different from traditional brands that smash the toes. Yet Altra still lauds their "wide" toe-box and "foot shape". Completely ludicrous. Altra, you've lost a customer for life.

I've had multiple pair of Torin, The last three styles have been a real disappointment. My normal size is an 11. The 4 was way too narrow in the toe box and had very little volume. The 4.0 was no better. tried 11,11.5 and even a 12, ridiculous sizing. I had such positive expectations for the 5. The sizing is still incorrect, same issues as the the 4.5, and now the design is even worse. I have three pair of the Olympus and they have worked well for any surface. The new wide versions only become way too sloppy, unless you have a very high volume foot.

Ive done about 5 runs with these shoes so far and there is clearly a FATAL FLAW. The bare semi-rigid rubber material used for the tongue digs into your skin. The way it is cut and rests into the foot has left me bleeding, slowly rubbing, digging, and slicing the skin away while you run - even with quarter length socks on. I'm only running 3.5 - 5 miles and there is no denying the issue, after just these short runs, I have now have an annoying slice across to front/top of my ankle, where the tongue of the shoe meets the foot. I was hoping the material would soften up after a couple runs, but alas, no luck with that. I'm actually shocked that Altra stuck with this semi-rigid, non-padded rubber material while designing the shoe. My Altra Lone Peak 2.5 shoes are perfect, with a big soft tongue. If the tongue of the Tourin 5 was made of a cushioned, not abrasive material, it would be close to perfect.

I absolutely love the Torin 4s, probably my favorite shoes! I have bunions and they were the best shows for my bunions. Now the 5s are way more narrow and even feel about a half size smaller. I will be returning:( Why do good running shoes always get updates and then suck?

Did anyone actually run in these before they were released? The tongue is stiff, digs into your skin, and makes the shoe unusable. Loved the prior version. This one is going back. What a shame. Nice looking shoe. But not a nice feeling one.

First off, I love Altras and the Torin specifically. I've run in Altras for over 8 years now. So I was thoroughly saddened by this Torin. The big issue? The shoe tongue is awful: too long and ends with a stiff plastic coating, which dug into my skin and rubbed it raw in short order on my first run. Why on earth did Altra do this to such an amazing shoe? I love the rest of the shoe, but it doesn't matter because of the shoe tongue. I hope Altra returns to the old style of the shorter cloth tongue. If I want to keep running in this shoe, I'll have to cut off the end of the tongue.

After buying size 10.5 in Torins since the Torin 2, as well as size 10.5 in King Mtn, Olympus, and Escalante Racer, I got these and my toes are hanging out over edge of the front sole. I need a bigger size now?!? Why would you make this shoe smaller? Also, the long tongue is digging into the skin at the front of my ankle. Sometimes I try a product and I think "Did this company produce this product without actually testing it out first?" This is one of those products. I am an Altra loyalist, so I'm not sure what my new road shoe is going to be. Super disappointed here.

Blisters on blisters. The heel rubbed my feet raw ... they are now over padded. They feel way too snug. The tongue is worse than the 4.5 plush if you can imagine. Gave me blisters on my ankle/ shin area. It's stuff and scratchy ... not at all what you would expect for a distance shoe. Sadly I have tried all the "improvements" since cancelling the Torin 4 and these are also lacking. ....save your money.
