The edge of the thin, rigid tongue on the Men's Torin 5 cut into the top of my foot after an hour of running. I will be mindful of avoiding any running shoe that has a tongue with a razor-like edge.

The tongue design on this shoe is intolerable, even with quarter high or long socks and not lacing the top grommets it cuts into the front of your ankle. This is a great shoe literally ruined by a long sharp tongue design.

Shoe is comfortable, But is falling apart! I had to return the first pair after a week! The second pair had the same issues and the soles are falling apart! Make sure to wear larger socks because the tongue is painful on ankle!

Love the Torin 4.5 plush. This shoe fails due to the tongue cutting into your ankle. Horrible design. It's also not as soft as the plush but that wasn't the deal breaker, the design flaw in the tongue was. Returned them to my local running store.

Over the years I have owned more than 20 pair of Altra Torin...... The Torin 5 is a big let down. The shoe runs small (1/2 size), the tongue has a sharp edge that has cut my ankle (I had to duct tape it to prevent cutting). and the right shoe came with the foot pad folded over under the tow box (seems like there was a lack of QC). I have loved the Torin, but it is time to break up.

Everything about the shoe is fine except the tongue. The tongue dug into my ankle bad enough that it caused it to bleed. I read another review complaining about the tongue but I didn't heed the warning.

Big, way too long tongue. Hits my ankle as I dorsiflex, painful. C'mon Altra... expect a more worthy successor to the exceptional Torin 4. ps. do not need or desire Plush!

I was excited to buy a pair of Altra's after a friend recommended them to me. I wore them while at work for a month and really liked them. Then I went for a run, took a hard left and the left shoe started to rip along the medial part of the show. By the time I got home there was a nickel sized hold and significant fray along the toe line.

This shoe is paper thin and doesn't feel like it would hold up when trying to walk very far. The price is way to high for such a poorly made shoe.

I love Altra. I've had the Escalante, Escalante Racer, Torin & Paradigm. I have enjoyed the previous versions of the Torin. The Torin 5 is not a good shoe. The tongue is awful. The sizing is different than all other Altras I have worn in the past. It is a least 1/2 size too small. The Ego midsole, which I am generally a huge fan of and is fantastic in the Escalante, does not seem to feel the same in the Torin and is unexpectedly a huge step down from the Quantic midsole in the previous version. Overall, I would not recommend this shoe at all. I don't quite understand how this shoe made it to production. The only improvement compared to the last version of the Torin shoe is the shoelaces. They are shorter. Please consider keeping that for future versions of the shoe and discarding every other change made to make the Torin 5.

I have loved Altra shoes for many years. The perfect width. Size 10 fit me perfectly across more than a half dozen different pairs of Altra shoes, including lifestyel and trail running shoes. So I order the Torin 5 thinking it will be a perfect fit. Guess what? Some genius at Altra decided to futz with the standard sizes. Today customer service says, "Oh, Torin 5 is running a half size small." Well, thanks for telling us, I guess. I can no longer count on ordering Altra shoes online and having them fit perfectly. Why do running shoe companies have to mess with a good thing?

I agree with the rest who reviwed this. The tongue is so rigid that it dug on my skin. I loved the older versions of this and I bought this upgrade. I suffered so much pain and swelling when i used it to run for an ultra as it dug in my skin. Don't buy this shoes.

I like running 1/2 marathons. I am a Torin fan. Had Torin 3s and 4s, loved both shoes. When I looked at the Torin 5 I had no choice because the 4 was no longer available. I read the reviews before buying and read the comments about the tongue. Regardless I bought a Troin 5. The bad reviews are right, the tongue digs into my ankle. On my first run the tongue caused a deep cut. I like wearing ultra light running socks as my feet can get hot. I now have to where socks that cover my ankle to protect my ankle from the tongue. I will most likely continue to buy Torin running shoes because they feel good on my feet.

I bought this shoe for a work shoe. I am a RN and I work every Monday, Wed, and Friday. Less than 2 months into owning them, they started to fall apart. (tread, seam, fabric). Horrible durability!

This is my second pair of Torin's, my 10th pair of Altra's overall, and I have loved every pair until now. I am truly shocked that the tongue on this shoe made it to production. I barley made it 5k before I had raw, bleeding blisters on the top of both ankles. I will happily send you the photos as this just happened yesterday. The tongue is a death trap for anyone pushing big miles. I also completely agree and echo the community that it's a 1/2 size smaller than the last model. I would have simply cut the tongue down myself if it was true to size, but the combination of the two makes this shoe unwearable. It really does suck having to write a review like this but I just can't understand how that tongue made it through testing for anyone who is using this shoe for it's intention. Might get away with it if you're wearing long socks, until it wears a hole on them.. I would honestly suggest that it needs to be recalled strictly to redo the tongue. Really doesn't feel right having to slap a return label on the box. Please, please use a U-cut tongue on the next round... It's like that for good reason.

I use these shoes for trail walking. I've had three or four pairs of Torins in the past, and they usually last me at least a year. These lasted 4 weeks before the sole started delaminating. They'll be going in the trash after 6 weeks. I do not recommend getting these shoes.

This would be a wonderful shoe if it was the correct size. I am always a 13 in every shoe. This is the only shoe i have ever bought that all my toes rub the end. Also the tongue is long and sharp, i took scissors and trimmed it, which looks dumb but solved that part.

I keep coming back to Altra, though I wish you guys would stop "improving" the shoes so darned often. In this case = epic fail. Two reasons: 1) I tripped over an uneven sidewalk on my first run in them, and noticed a couple of days later that the non-reinforced toe area, which is made of the same meshy fabric as the upper, was scuffed up pretty badly on one shoe. I guess I'm grateful it happened during the 30-day free return period. 2) Whatever the stiff material is on the tip of the shoe's tongue, it bites into the front of the ankle uncomfortably. This version of the shoe, in my opinion, sucks. Stop making and selling it.

The tongue on these shoes is absolutely terrible. It digs into my shin, is painful, and anything over 10 minutes gives me blisters. Avoid at all costs.

Too small, too narrow. I don't understand how Altra shoes are so inconsistent when it comes to sizing. Very frustrating.

I've have two pairs of Torin 4s and they are great. Torin 5 have a stiff tongue and it pokes me in the shin when I stride. Even certain positions when sitting the tongue pokes at the shins. Please bring back Torin 4 design

Torins have been my go to road shoe from version 2.5 to 4. Who ever decided the new tongue was a good thing needs to run a few miles in them. Still looking for version 4's to stock up on.

The tongue completely ruins a great shoe otherwise. Cut both my ankles on my first run. If you still decide to purchase, buy mid length socks. Also, I wear a size 9, but in these I had to buy a size 10. But, with ALTRA that is not surprising, they have never got their sizes right.

The nice thing about the shoe is the wider toe box; however, I found the tongue of the shoe to be really cheap. The material is almost like plastic and cut the top of my foot. I tried tape, longer socks and bandages but to no avail. Very disappointed with the shoe. Would not buy again.

the tongue didnt bother me, i wear quarter socks so the tongue didnt make contact with my skin. The tongue does feel stiff so i would definitely not want it making contact with my skin. My big problem for me is the sizing. I wear size 13. The she felt a half size too small. I mean, my big toenail was sore after a 10 mile run. It would definitely cause runners toe if i continued to use the shoe. I didn't have this problem with torin 4.5 plush which felt super comfortable and did not irritate my toes/toenails. You can probably remedy this problem by ordering a half size up. problem is you cannot order half size up once you hit size 13 so my only option would be to order size 14 which would be too big. I also use escalante 2.5 size 13 which fits perfectly. The shoe looks nice and feels otherwise comfortable but it would definitely cause runners toe/toenail which is the reason why i use altra shoes in the first place. Very disappointed.
