I have 50 miles on these shoes and I really like them, BUT the tongue is TOO STIFF. I hoped the tongue would break-in but the tip of the tongue continues to dig into my ankle. I actually broke out the scissors today and trimmed the top of the tongue on both shoes to stop the ankle irritation. My soles are also wearing faster than I would expect. Do better Altra!

I would really like to try Altra again because these have a fantastic, wide toe box and felt really interesting. I can't describe it well, but it was unlike any shoe I'd ever worn and I would have loved to have gone for a run in them. The lack of arch support might be fixable with aftermarket insoles (if they would fit the oddly-shaped footbed) but the killer on this - as has been mentioned in many reviews - is the tongue. The tongue of the shoe is a razor blade. Whomever came up with the design should be forced to wear them. The rubbing was incredibly uncomfortable just trying on and I can't imagine what the top of my ankles would look like after a run. Had to send these back.

Very little arch support and the tongue is an insane razor blade of neoprene. Whom ever designed these shoes should be forced to wear them with low cut socks. Toe box is amazingly wide and I would love to try a pair when the tongue isn’t a sadistic little razor blade.

A few years ago switched from Hokas to Altra as I changed my gait to more forefoot striking. I ran through several pairs of Escalantes. Then I tried Torin 4.5 Plush and loved them. They took impact off my knees, felt better overall, and had more energy return. But my 4.5's are dead now, so I purchased the Torin 5, despite complaints of the tongue digging in and short laces. The complaints were on the money. After a single 5 mile run the tongue dug into my ankle. It gave me a painful reddened area on my ankle (I wear no-show socks). And the laces are too short. My solution is to not use the last eyelet, bend the tongue forward, and tie the laces (now long enough because not all the eyelets are used) over the top of the bent tongue. This worked great. But, really? I otherwise love the shoe. It feels great like the Torin 4.5 Plush. But the tongue issue is too much. Altra should quickly revise this model.

I do not run only walk, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. These shoes lasted all of 65 miles before they started coming apart.

Love the shoe itself. The cushioning is perfect and the toe box fits well. The tongue though drove me insane. I literally couldn't even walk out of the store with them before returning them. Altra - fix this!

I was hoping I'd found a pair of Altra's that work for me. My foot shape looks perfect for their cut/design. This shoe was perfect length, width...but the mid-foot area was so oversized "for" my foot! Too much material even tying the laces closer without cramping the width did not work. I have to return. This is the fourth pair of Altra's I've tried, if I'm going to send $150 for a shoe...it better feel almost perfect out of the box. Zappos is great tho'!

I loved the Torin 4.5 plush, but these just don't stack up. Like every other manufacturer, it seems like Altra has decided to go slightly more narrow in the midfoot for no reason. The cushion "upgrade" isn't the worst, but having come from the 4.5 it absolutely feels different. I did have to go up a full size in order to find a fit that works. And then there's the tongue, that is far too stiff for no reason. If I had not worn the Torin in the past, I may have been a little more lenient.

I have been a fan of these, however with my latest pair the tongue on Torin 5 bothered me from the very beginning. It's almost as if it was not tested. It has actually pushed me over to Topos. Don't buy these unless you like oddly designed tongues that dig into you! And good luck getting anyone in customer service to respond to your issue. When I returned them to the store the sales person said that I was not the first person to return them for the identical reason.

I normally love the Torin but this shoe has really disappointed. The big draw to Altras to me has always been their comfort. The tongue on this shoe has a sharp edge that digs into your leg. I usually wear ankle socks but it is so uncomfortable, I can't wear ankle socks with this shoe.

The tongue is terrible. Left my shoes bloody. Had a race a week after getting these. Cut the tongue off where it was rubbing. Altra wouldn't accept my return. Never buying from Altra again.

Having run in the escalante for years, I thought about giving the torin a shot due to its higher cushion. What an absolute disappointment. The cushion and upper material is actually not bad, but the tongue completely ruins the shoe. I am amazed that it made it through r&d and testing.

I'm a long-time, almost exclusively Altra wearing runner. This sharp/hard tongue design makes running in this shoe feel like you are sawing off your foot at the ankle with a dull blade. I seriously considered Ubering home halfway through my first run. I ended up just taking scissors and cutting the tongue off down to around the first set of laces. They are wearable now, but it's hard to get excited about them.
I wouldn't call this a high cushion shoe, it feels quite firm compared to previous versions. I do like the uppers. Bring back the amazing Plush 4.5! That shoe ruled!!!!

Do. Not. Buy. Torin 5.
I don't understand why shoe companies feel the need to constantly change a loved and proven design. I have been wearing Altra road and trail shoes for 5 years now and the Torin 5 is unwearable.
The tongue is stiff and actually cut into my ankle after just 5km around town.
Took them back to the store and the associate said they have been getting a lot of returns on this shoe.
The Torin Luxe is fine and runnable despite being marketed as a "lifestyle' shoe.
Skip the Torin 5.

I love Altra shoes, I have not run in anything else since finding them several years ago (that is probably ~6 pair now), but this shoe has left me baffled as to what they were thinking. If you don't wear a long sock, the tongue will literally dig into your shin. Come on Altra - you're better than this! Otherwise the shoe sizes maybe just a bit small, but is overall a good shoe. Just the Worst Tongue Design Ever!

I've been running on Torin since the Torin 2.5, and I've been a huge fan of the Torin line up to Torin 4.5, but I've been very disappointed with the Torin 5. Similar to other reviews I've seen, the tongue design is awful and it cut into my skin during my first run. I now have to use extra long, thick socks to run in these. Also, the Torin 5 feels slightly shorter than other Torin versions I've run in as my toes don't experience the same roominess I've grown to love.

I've loved my Altra Torins all the way up to the 4.5's. Logged 500 miles on my 4.0's. Love the open fell of the toe box with the zero drop platform. Unfortunately somehow the toe box got shallower with the 5.0's. I gave them a solid 16 miles of test runs. Each run ended in raw toes from pressing into the top of the toe box fabric. I did try multiple sizes to no avail. Zero other complaints.

These shoes felt incredibly, incomprehensible small relative to other Altra shoes. The tongue was stiff and really felt strange across the top of the foot but, more than anything, these felt narrow and extremely short…as if they were 2 full sizes too small.

First of all I wear nothing but altra now as I am on my feet all day and walk a lot for work. I have 5-6 different pairs of torin and always like the feel until I purchased these. The tongue digs into my skin and feels awful. I've only worn them around the house but unfortunately I'll be returning them. Please change this small but very important detail on these shoes.

I've been running in Altras since Altra started and Torin is my shoe. There have been some great improvements but did anyone test these? That tongue will rub your ankle raw. Absolutely terrible mistake.

Purchased these from Fleet Feet and the customers service was excellent. After a couple of days, I switched to short socks and felt immediate pain from the tongue. The designer of these shoes must not have tested them on humans. Otherwise, these shoes are very comfortable. I will wear them for 25 days with long socks and if they are okay, I will trim off the outer edge of the tongue.

These shoes are extremely comfortable except for the tongue. The tongue cuts into my ankles if I wear short socks. I normally wear compression stockings and the tongue isn't terrible with those. However, when I wear short socks, they cut into my ankle and leave a rash. I'm very sad about this! Maybe if you have very skinny legs it wouldn't be a problem, but I do not. I will likely have to cut the tongues down.
