I am an Altra fan, and this is about my 6th pair of Torin's, Torin is my favorite running shoe, but this version does have an issue with the tongue. The tongue is too long and is made of a rigid type of material. I typically wear short socks when running, but was not able to with this particular pair of Torins. I've had to cut over 1/2" off of the tongue to keep it from rubbing the front of my ankle area raw when wearing. I would not buy this particular version of Torin again, and I hope the tongue issue gets corrected on the next version.

Love the original Torins (whatever that date is?). Got another pair of Torins a couple years later and not so happy. Then a third pair and these were just as fantastic as the first pair. Now on my fourth pair and back to not so happy. Just wish the construction stayed consistent!

I wear these at work in the operating room on a daily basis. I've had a number of Altras before and absolutely love them. However, I've had issues with the Torin 5 twice now. After only a few weeks the little piece of dark colored tread on the outer front portion of the bottom peels off and starts dangling. Altra customer service is top notch as always, they replaced the first pair right away. Sadly, the same issue has happened again with the replacement pair. I'm moving on to a different model this time. Outside of that, they feel great, fit great, and if it wasn't for that quality control issue they would be awesome. But for the price, they shouldn't start coming apart so quickly.

The Torin 4 was a great running shoe. It had the perfect amount of firmness for any distance run. The Torin 5 seams to be chasing the other shoe manufacturers by going towards the soft cushion running shoe. I have been buying Altra running shoe because they promote forefoot running. Now the shoes are soft high cushioning shoes that do just the opposite. Another problem with this shoe is the tongue is thin on the edge so it cuts into the front of your ankle. Sorry to say but I have switch to a different shoe company.

As an owner of the 4 and 4.5 Plush, I can confirm that these new Torins are very different. They're nowhere near as comfortable. The cushioning is quite a lot harder. It's not necessarily bad, but it is a completely different shoe. The recurring complaint about the abrasive tongue is 100% accurate. Just a few minutes of wear in the store were enough for it to irritate my legs. I ended up buying a second pair of 4.5s instead. If the 4's were great and the 4.5's amazing, then these 5's are okay at best (if you can get past the tongue), or even plain unwearable at worst (if you can't). I'm going to wait for a 5.5 revision and wear my second pair of 4.5's until then.

I normally wear at least a 2E. Escalante 2.5 fit really well with sock like upper. I saw the wide available in new Torin. Shoe fit really well foot wise. The tongue is rigid and cuts into lower shin

Looks fine. Feels fine, except for toe box. I don't think it's as much a length issue as much as it may be a shallow toe box. The overlay on the front of the shoe touches/presses on my toe nails. A half size up would fix this but really shouldn't have to. It would be too much shoe. I wear socks that cover my ankles so no tongue issues. The outer rubber is showing a fair amount of wear and peeling after 7 runs or about 50 miles. The old models had hard, almost plastic like outsoles so I would never recommend going back to that but be ready for regular replacement here. Not sure they will give me much more than. 200 miles.

I really like the new foam: it's springy and comfortable. I also didn't mind the tongue (though I wear socks above the ankle). But the sizing is a bummer. They're at least a half size too small. I've worn a 13 in every other pair of Altras I've worn (including the Torin 4.0 and 4.5). But in the 13 here, my toes jammed into the end of the shoe. I just need another half-size up, but they don't make a 13.5. So I had to go up to the 14, which is a whole lot of shoe for my foot. And, while looks are subjective, this is easily one of the ugliest shoes I've ever worn (especially compared to the 4.5, which was quite elegant).

I've run in this shoe a few times and like how it feels underfoot, however the new tongue just flat out doesn't work. During the summer I prefer run with no show socks and this younger cuts into my ankle no matter how many adjustments I try and make. If I run in these now I have to wear 3/4 ankle socks of full socks and even with this adjustment on my part I won't run longer than 5 or 6 miles in them or risk a significant hit spot of blister

This is quite a but smaller than other Altras I've owned over the last few years. At least 1/2 size smaller than others. They're going back for 1/2 size larger.

I love this shoe. I didn't have a problem with the tongue like others mentioned but I don't wear no-show socks so that may be why it didn't bother me. I was using the Paradigm previously but the last 2 versions have been too rigid for me. I don't need that level of stability so I thought I would try the Torin. The Torin runs a full size smaller than the Paradigm and is also a little narrower. So, I had to go up a full size for the same fit. I also tried it a half-size larger with the wider fit. That was ok but a little gushy in the middle. Hope this is helpful.

Everything about this shoe is incredible except the tongue. I read the reviews and was hoping people were exaggerating about the tongue but before I knew it I felt the hot spots forming from the tongues constant rubbing. I put high socks on to dampen the rubbing but after a long walk with my dog I felt the hot spots coming on again. The lockdown is perfect. The sole is space-age genius material. How can it be so cushioned AND responsive? Amazing. I think the sizing is perfect (I wear all 9.5 Altra men's and this felt right on par) Just that stubborn tongue. Please just modify the tongue next time you manufacture and I'll buy back my return!

TLDR: the tongue sucks, size up.
I loved the Torin 4's and would happily have bought them for the rest of my running life. They redesigned the tongue in the 5's (why?) and now instead of it being a lightly cushioned thing you never think about it, it's a stiff piece of material that constantly nags at you. This combined with the fact that you now have to go up a 1/2 size to get the same length which means you need to cinch the shoes down a bit more to compensate is a bad combination. Still they are better than 90% of the shoes on the market. They did improve on the one flaw of the 4's in that the laces are now the right length. Also the new cushion in the sole is softer and more bouncy than the 4's. If you could combine the upper of the 4's with the sole of the 5's you'd have a perfect shoe.

I really like everything about this shoe except the toe box. The fit is snug, cushioning great, mesh top flexible. I've owned Torin 3.5 and 4, and this is the first time I can say Altra has gotten away from what made them great; the toe box. Too narrow! I am keeping them because the mesh upper allows my toes to expand, but they reach out a little over the base. Please, Altra, go wide again!

I am a huge fan of the Torrin. The 5 is better than the 4.5. I like the upper so much better and the ride for me is better. HOWEVER, the width is definitely an issue and the tongue is knife like. I traditionally wear no shows and that is an issue. I think if you mess with the width and the tongue on this model you will have a fantastic shoe.
I am still a fan but definitely needs some work.

I run a majority of my road runs in Escalante 2.5s. I have multiple pair I rotate out but wanted something more cushioned for longer runs. I chose the Torin model as I wanted to stay in the Altra family. Shipping was super fast! I ordered on a Thursday night and the shoes arrived Saturday morning via the free 3 day shipping. I have only been on one long run since I got these in. I ran a 13 mile run in the heat of the day. The first thing I noticed is that my feet stayed dry longer than normal when running in the Escalantes. The upper is engineered mesh in the Torin and not knit like the Escalante which may be the reason why. The midsole felt great on my feet and my legs felt great during and after my run. I love how soft the midsole yet also has some energy return or bounce. I loved everything about this shoe honestly except for the tongue. I am not sure why Altra designed the tongue the way they did but the tongue is extra long and made of a rigid plastic or rubber like material. I dont see how it could be comfortable for anyone. It was very noticeable on my run for the first 3 or so miles. I could feel the tongue digging into my skin. I stopped noticing this after a while but It was noticeable again during the last few miles of my run and I did manage to get a sore on one ankle even with socks covering the rub spot. I am hoping that the shoes will break in or something as I really want to love this shoe. If the tongue does not break in, I may resort to cutting the tongue shorter myself lol. As it stands, I would not recommend this shoe because of the tongue. If the tongue does break in, I would totally recommend this shoe.

I've had every Torin since the beginning and it seems like they've been getting smaller every time. My first few pairs were 13. I was wearing size 14 until the Torin 4. I still have my Torin 4.5s new in the box because they are a little too tight and less comfy than my Torin 4s. Now the new Torin 5 is way too tight in 14 and I am exchanging it for a 15!
The crazy part is, the whole marketing of Altra shoes relies on two bragging points; more toe room and zero drop. If anything, the toe room should be expanding not contracting. I can get shoes without toe room anywhere.
This is not to say I don't love my Altra shoes, I just find the sizing to be inconsistent and heading in the wrong direction.

This shoe would have been an improved fit over the 4.5, except for one issue: the tongue. The tongue in the 5 has about a 1/2 of an inch more material than the 4.5, and feels incredibly stiff when it digs against my ankle. I kind of dealt with it walking, hoping that I would get use to it. But it's an enormous issue when running. It interferes with ankle mobility/dorsiflexion. That has a ripple effect, and for my finicky ankles, it leads to injury. I think the new Torin looks cool; the mesh upper looks to be strong (which is good bc both of my 4.5's mesh uppers ripped from the sole, before I got to 100 miles of running), and the additional padding in the heel really does secure my feet. Come on Altra, you got this! Fix the tongue and we got a great shoe

They are peeling apart after about a month of use. No running, just daily wear at an average job.

I bought these for the wide toe box and zero drop. I use them for walking. The fabric/mesh is tearing away from sole well within warranty so I've filed a claim.

The tread started pulling apart after 2 months of regular wear on carpeted floors and finished cement floors. I have a pair of Lone Peaks that are still going strong after hiking and wearing on these floors as well. Torin 5 was the first none-hiking sneaker that I have bought from Altra and was less than pleased that they fell apart so quickly. It is difficult to find sneakers for me that fit in woman sizes, let alone men's if they are not a 4E. I would not recommend them for the cost and how well they held up under simple wear.
