Whether watching a soccer tournament on a wet chilly day, or walking Dottie the Lab in the single digit temperatures we've been having in Virginia, this coat has kept me warm and dry. In the cold windy weather, I have added several layers underneath which expanded the comfort range. It's so light and squooshes down into a small ball to fit in a small locker at the gym.
I'm 5'3 and wear a size 14. The petite large is the perfect size for me with room for previous mentioned layering.

I love this coat! I hadn't planned on buying a coat when I headed to the LLBean store a while back, but when I saw this on the rack it said, "Pick me! Pick me!" I'm so glad I did! It's light but warm and an absolute godsend with the single digit temps we're having right now. The hood is perfect, not too small, but not too large either. Many jackets with a built in hood poke me under the chin because they do not lie flat when they're not totally zipped up. This one is comfortable, and the lining at the chin is soft when fully zipped.
I'm 5'3", 160#, and the Petite Large is a good fit. The blue is a beautiful, subtle color. I can't imagine being without this coat!

This coat has been all I expected it to be. I first purchased it without the hood and soon realized that was a mistake, so I returned it and got this version. It has been extremely cold and windy in the east for a couple of weeks, but I have never been cold with this coat and layers under it. In normal Mid-Atlantic winters, the most I would need is a sweater under this coat, but I've added long John's and my LLB down vest so dog walks are still a joy.
I'm 5'3" and wear a size 14, so the large petite is a perfect fit.

This is a wonderful long down coat! It comes down to my mid calf so covers well and is very warm. It has a great zipper that zips both directions so you can zip it open some from the bottom to give you more leg room if you need it. It is VERY light weight but extremely warm. I was comfortable in -17 degree weather. Great coat!

So glad you asked me to review this coat.
I live in Chicago, which means I wear a coat 8 months out of the year. I actually have separate coats for business, and for leisure. This year, I needed to upgrade my "work" coat. It had to be warm enough so I could walk from the train station to my office, to other events in the business district. Did I say that I like to walk outside in the freezing cold? It has to be warm AND chic. 850 Fill seemed like it would be warmer than the 550's I've been wearing the last few years, so I gave this a try.
I am so glad I bought this coat! The color is an upscale gray/taupe color, which stands out from the sea of black, yet sophisticated. It is nipped in slightly at the waist, which not only prevents updrafts, but also looks more feminine. The hood is filled with the same special down and can be adjusted to fit more closely to the head.
I am 5' tall, 118 pounds, 34-28-36 with an athletic build. I ordered the XS petite, which turned out perfect. I can wear this over 3 lightweight and close fitting layers, as well as a thick college sweatshirt, while still being able to move around comfortably. I can wear a thin wool beanie or balaclava under the hood. The coat is insulated, but it is not puffy. Worn, it has a relatively slim profile, which was important for me.
The last week has been brutally cold, with wind chills at or below zero. Layered in this way, this coat kept me comfortably warm enough to walk several blocks outside. My arms, body and head stayed warm. Highly recommend this coat!

Love, love, love this long jacket! I have worn it just about every day since it arrived! I am about 5'2", 145 pounds and the medium petite fit perfectly and there is room for a sweater. I ordered the blue and am very happy with the color. I highly recommend this jacket for it's light weight warmth and comfort!

This coat is extremely warm, light and I like having the hood. I like it so much I also purchased the shorter version of this coat for warmer winter days.

It was as late as it was warm, or perhaps the other way round, but it certainly served well this wicked winter.

I really liked that this coat was so warm while being deceptively lightweight. It worked great being stuffed here and there on the airplane that had no spare room. I especially appreciate the sturdy 2 way zipper that does not snag going up or down. I am very pleased that I bought this coat.

This coat is very comfortable and warm. I ordered the Dark Plum, which is a really pretty color. My measurements: 5'7", chest 34, 130-135 lbs. I initially ordered the Medium, however, it was way too big, even with layering. I exchanged for the Small, which fits perfectly with a layer. An additional interior pocket would be nice in the coat. In the past, I've had issues with Bean coats and the zippers. Fortunately, the zipper on this Ultralight Down works well.
Bean needs to definitely work on an improved return process. There was utter confusion with how I was billed and credited with the exchange process. Also, it would be nice to see the prices of items on the packaging slips once again.

When this coat first arrived I thought it would not be warm because it is so light. It has gotten colder and I'm quite comfy!
The style and fit, M-Petite, are spot on. I bought it in black can be used in the city or around town.

I am very pleased with this coat. I can't believe how warm it is while being so lightweight as well. It is very comfortable and allows me to easily move around in it, unlike some bulkier coats I've owned that have restricted my movement to some extent. I've already machine washed and dried it twice and it has held up perfectly. I only wish there were an interior cord to cinch the waist a bit more. Other than that, it's perfect!

The coat is very warm and lightweight. I had ordered two other name brand coats of this quality, but She-who-must-Be-obeyed liked this one the best.

Super warm and very lightweight. As I do with most things at bean, I had to size down (normally a S but needed an XS).

I spent a lot of time online looking for a winter coat. When I found this one, it had everything on my checklist. When I received the coat it exceeded all of my expectations! The fit is perfect, as is the quality. I highly recommend this coat!

My original order was for a very similar coat that had no hood. I soon found that in cold wet weather I needed the hood and have replaced the original coat with this one. This coat is perfect in every way. I wear a 12-14 petite and it fits like it was made for me, with room for layering if needed. It's light and warm and protects from all kinds of weather. The mariner blue is beautiful. I can see this coat being a mainstay of my winter outdoor wardrobe for many years.

This coat fits perfectly! I'm 5'2" and usually have a problem with arm length (even in petite sizes). In previous years, I was unable to purchase a size petite coat from LL Bean because the arms were still too long. So happy that LL Bean has adjusted the petite sizing to their outerwear. I typically do not like wearing long, bulky coats while driving, but this coat is so light and comfortable and the perfect length. My new "go to" coat for any occasion! Thanks LL Bean and also a big thanks to your Product Development Team!

I looked at too many longer coats for some time since I'm always cold. I chose this one based on the style, 850 down fill, and water resistant material. Living in the Chicagoland area requires warm winter gear, especially when walking the dog, going to outdoor sports, or spending any length of time outside. I was skeptical since I first wore the coat on a 50 degree windy day and didn't feel it was particularly warm. I also noticed I wasn't overheating in the car with it zipped up. I'm glad I wasn't hasty and remembered down can keep you cool or warm. I waited to write this review until I could test the coat in the midwest elements and had the perfect opportunity this past weekend when I stood outside for 1.5 hours at a soccer game in the pouring rain, with ridiculous winds and 35 degree temps. The coat held up beautifully. I only had an umbrella for half the time and stayed dry. The hood is designed very well- it stayed held snug around my head and zipped up easily on my neck unlike others. I stayed warm! I forgot boots and my feet were drenched, but the rest of me was toasty. I also had a regular long sleeve shirt on underneath and didn't feel the howling wind through the coat. In addition, this coat traveled well; it's so compact and easily scrunched into a bag filled with all sorts of outerwear in my trunk.
Negatives: I went with an extra small which is a bit tight around my small chest but quite baggy in the waist. The arm cuffs tend to ride up and allow wind to hit the skin between your gloves and coat arms. I would have preferred a longer layered fleece cuff underneath or even better, a thumbhole fleece cuff. Overall, still a great coat and I appreciate the simple, sleek design.

With the colder temperatures of 30's and 40's and gusty winds we now have in upstate NY this Nov., I've been happily wearing my Ultralight 850 down coat in warmth and comfort. The large size is great with room for another warm layer of a sweater or fleece beneath this coat. I take size 10/12 and have large shoulders and long arms and the fit is good. I love having the warm hood, which stays up well and keeps my head warm even without a hat underneath. Without the middle layer, the coat is not warm enough for me in temperatures below 45 to 50. Living where I do, I also have a coat for below zero temperatures, so the Ultralight 850 is a great addition to my winter coat wardrobe. It will also be excellent for my travels to foreign countries with cold temperatures since it packs down really well.

Other reviews weren't so good but for me this coat works well. It's not overly warm but I wanted a light down and I stay warm for the many times I use it for running all over. It is fitted on me for a medium but I also like that about it. I normally would have ordered a large but thought I'd try a medium and it works out well as I don't wear anything bulky underneath. If you are looking for a well made and nice looking coat with moderate warmth I recommend this. I love the longer length for keeping your
legs warmer also.

My husband bought me this coat as an early Christmas present. I've been wanting a longer coat to keep me warmer in the winter. The added hood was perfect! The fit is excellent - I bought a medium and that is my usual size. This coat is lightweight and seems pretty warm. I'm not a cold weather lover so this should be perfect for me. I can't wait to start wearing it!

I love this coat- have it without the hood, ordered one with the hood as soon as it was available. Size fits as well as my older one- I wear a 6-8, bought a small in this down coat and it's a perfect fit. If winter ever comes I will be ready.

I bought this coat last year I love the coat fit and warmth, but there is no hood does not really adjust and stay adjusted there is nothing to hold it in place. I am a hood person but want it snug this is not that way.

What a great three-quarter coat. So light to the touch and yet really warm which has been especially needed this very cold winter. The only reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars is because it doesn't have a detachable hood. I am a very tall woman who appreciates the generous arm length, but the hood is too short in height. I would welcome your outerwear in tall sizes.

Foreign made. If I had known LL Bean products are no longer all made in the great USA I would have looked at the tag to ensure this was. I didnt though and I dont like that I now need to so I prob wont be shopping there anymore.
