Bought these shoes about 20 days ago and with little wear the rubber is has managed to peel completely off in multiple places. very dissapointing being as my first pair of these were mesh and they lasted FOREVER.

I've had perhaps 6 pairs of - ultra 3 - Gtx and non gtx. Perfect fit, really comfortable. Used for heavy duty walking like Cape Wrath Trail. Kept on buying because of fit and grip - even though they weren't that long lasting - all developed a hole where the fabric meets rubber toe cap at flex point, but usually at same time as sole lost it's grip due to mileage , so I excused that. So I bought the 4 Mids with high expectation. Felt a little cramped, but new boot, not uncommon. Then on long cross Scotland hike my big toe nail went black and painful, and stayed that way for months. Such was my confidence in previous boots that I bought another pair in hope it was a quirk of that particular pair - but same thing happened - another few months of pain. . Really annoying - I'm now back to the drawing board looking for perfect fit and comfort. Would wide fit work - doubt it as toe is problem and it seems to be height rather than a width problem. Other Salomon models - possibly, but I'm going to look at other brands now. It's perplexing - last model clearly had a lot of repeat sales so why spoil it?

I've been wearing the Salomon ultra shoes for probably a decade now. The previous versions were my go to everyday shoe. I've recently had to buy the ultra 4s and they are very disappointing. The shoes feels stiff, tight around the middle but loose around the heel. The design isn't as good and just doesn't feel comfortable. Hopefully the version 5 goes back to the winning formula for the past.

These are my 6th pair of Salomon shoes, the X-Ultra 4. Very disappointed when comparing them to the Ultra 3's. They feel, look and function much "more cheaply" than previous versions. I would never trust these on the trail with a pack. They run more narrow than previous versions. The inside pinches your feet forward of the arch where the material flexes and where the "side coating" comes up. The top down view of these shoes looks like some poorly conceived "old man vs. Frankenstein" shoe.
The good, the heel cup is tight and doesn't slip too much. The laces are good and lock tight and the tongue is well padded. I relegated these to lawn work / taking the dog out.
Bring back the X-Ultra 3 and stop trying to cheapen your brand with a "better version" Salomon.

I have worn Salomon footwear for years, specifically the X Ultra series prior to this 4th edition. I've had these shows about a year and generally use them for light hiking with dog, generally non technical trails and pathways. Previously these shoes would last quite a long time but this new design is terrible. The high back at the ankle rubs quite a bit and the material at the toes has cracked and broken. The sole has held up as usual. I have not experienced problems like this with the previous versions, I literally wore them until the soles wore out. I see these issues on other sellers sites as well, hopefully Salomon will fix these issues!!!

The wide fit is fine for me but every step hurts because the fabric over the forefoot folds and presses downwards. Maybe it will improve with use and wear.

I bought this to replace an existing Solomon which I wore out. It seems like this shoe built on a narrower last than the previous model.

The shoes fit great and I love wearing them, but on my third use, one of the bottom lace eyelets broke. These are probably my 15th pair of Salomon shoes, and I've never had an issue like this. Now my one shoe cannot be laced sufficiently tight.

I love the X ultra 3 but the new 4 is the most uncomfortable shoe. Hopefully Salomon will correct this with the next version.

I own 2 pairs of X Ultra 3 which I find very comfortable. I wear a size 13. I ordered an X Ultra 4 thru REI. I found the 4 uncomfortable. Felt like there was no padding all around. I returned it.

The 3's have been out of stock for a very long time, so I tried these. They are comfortable, but the sole is not nearly as stable as the 3 and the workmanship is not either. The rubber material that is glued to the top was coming loose and gapping after 3 months. Sure hope the X Ultra 3s come back in stock soon. Solomon???

Wife bought these for a birthday present in July mainly where them at weekends, so haven't worn them too much and already they look about 5 yrs old seam at the front appears to be coming apart, and the top appears to look damp as moisture cant escape, currently trying to see if the 2yr warranty will cover the faulty seam, one i can upload the receipt and if possible i would exchange for a darker pair , so it doesn't look like i have sweaty feet, shoes are comfortable had no issues with sole as previous reviews go by overall a good shoe just a shame there not breathable as stated and seam is coming apart. pics attached

Seriously loved these shoes very comfortable. Had to get whole size bigger than the quest 4. So not quite getting the sizing but able to try on in shop.
Foot arch seems a bit too far forward at first but soon mould to foot perfectly.
Didn't have any issue with the heal or rubbing. Sole was great, But.... one month in glue came unstuck at the side where foot bends (same place as other reviews). Would love to get another pair but don't want to risk this happening again. Such a shame.

I've had several pairs of the 3s and seems the Ultra 4 has a higher instep and rigid sides making them less comfortable than my Ultra 3s. I'll keep them to see if they can be broken in but sorry you dropped a proven shoe.

I bought these shoes several months ago and decided to start wearing them. The shoe has great traction like the soles, the only qualm is the shoes are narrow and created a lot of pressure on the side of the feet. Not sure if a break in period will ease the fit.

I bought these for my husband who is size 13.5 with a narrow foot. The shoes fit well but he could not deal with the lacing system and it looked as though the lace holes were too small for regular laces. We returned the shoes. He could not adequately tighten the shoe with the lace system.

The X Ultra series has been my outdoors shoe for many years. The most durable one was the first, which lasted me more than a year - maybe even two - with a fair bit of use. Over the years, the durability of the shoe has gone down, but it has gotten more lightweight and has added some better features.
The x ultra 4 has been reshaped and now causes terrible blisters and chafing in the ankles due to the higher support. I've tried different variations with insoles I have to try and position my foot so that I don't destroy my ankles, but I can't make it work. I'm very disappointed because now I will have to find another shoe for my feet.
From the hiking I did with it, I liked the grippiness of the sole, but would prefer the older materials that were more stiff.
Salomon should have just left it with the original X Ultra.. it was well built and I have noticed poorer construction as the series went on.
It's a shame because it was my favourite shoe.

Bought these online for dog walking and the occasional hike.
The arch of my foot has so much pressure on that it hurts after 10 mins of walking and I can still feel it the next day. It is a real shame as the rest of the shoe felt great and would have made for a good walking shoe.
Replaced them with a Sanford which has an arch support suitable for human feet.

Bought a year ago based on reviews of previous generation and overall quality of all Salomon products. Comfortable and light and ideal for hiking. However as others have noted, the soles do wear out quickly but biggest issue is split in fabric on uppers.
Should be covered by warranty - waiting for a response - but not a failure that I would expect from Salomon or a pair of shoes at such a price

I received a pair as a replacement to my Ultra 3's due to the top fabric perforating after just 9 months but they were otherwise extremely comfortable. The new 4's are nowhere nearly as comfortable, the tongue keeps sliding down the side which drives me mad and there is a horrible rubbery stink which my previous pair didn't have (I never suffer from foot odour, it's definitely a rubber shoe smell). After 2 failed pairs I won't risk buying another pair of Salomons.

I slipped these on and thought I found the perfect shoe, but my insole immediately started hurting my insole once I started walking. No matter what I did to try to adjust, the pain remained. I've always bought Salomon, but for some reason, these just don't fit right. Perhaps I need a wide-fitting version, but I've never worn wide-fit shoes my entire life.

I have been wearing shoes for quite a while and walked at least 100 miles with them. When they break it they provide decent support for the foot in dry and wet conditions.
The worst thing about shoes it does not provide decent breathability for your feet. Even after short distances (even 5K), you will start to notice sweat stains building upon the shoes. I never had any similar issues with hiking shoes before.

I really wanted to like these but there's just not enough shoe here. Foot fatigue ruins trips and I couldn't get through two 7 mile day hikes without noticing the short comings of these shoes. To make a shoe this light they seemingly removed everything but the grip and gore-tex. The features are great but don't sell out for luxuries if you can't stay on your feet.

This is my 6-7 pair of Ultra's. Love, LOVE, this shoe.... and then you changed it. The tongue is too short, makes it a pain to tuck the laces in and you lose the cushion of a larger tongue. The sides are too high and dig into my ankles. They feel clunky. They sound clunky. They just don't have the slipper like comfort all the Ultra predecessors did.
I'm going to try an insert, see if that helps with the ankle dig.
Buy the old model for as loooong as you can!
