Please read other reviews this model will bruise your ankles. And they no longer stand behind their warranty after a week of back-and-forth they denied a warranty because they claimed this is a comfort issue not manufactured defect. The ankle area is square shaped instead of contoured to the ankle like all the other shoes made.

I've been wearing salomon hiking shoes for 13 years. This is the most uncomfortable one so far. It puts heavy pressure on my toes if I wear them more than half an hour although the size is ok. Though it is because it's new and I have to wear it for a while to get used to it but it's getting worse. Been waiting for it to be available for 3 months. Was so happy to order but right now I am very disappointed.

I have been buying the XUltras since the 2. Have owned multiple pairs of each the 2,3, & 4. Saw that the 4's came out and as my 3's were wearing down, decided to buy a pair. Wow, I regretted the decision immediately. The rubber quality has gone down since the 2'a and seems to wear down wayyyy quick. This design is more stiff, fabric plasticky, and does not 'hug' your foot like the previous. The toe box is super wide in this version which lends to my toes rubbing and not feeling comfortable. Not true to fit, seems like they decided to make this shoe a bit larger. Size 10.5. I refuse to buy this crap shoe again unless I can find the 3's for a reasonable price. Not sure why redesign something that works and doesn't need tweaking. Boo Salomon, boo.

I've had x Ultra 3 for many years and decided to try the new x ultra 4. Unfortunately as others have mentioned, they're super uncomfortable. They are too tight around the arch area. I hoped they might somehow break-in after a few wears but that hasn't happened. They're too uncomfortable to wear, wish I had heeded the reviews here.

I've bought and used Salomon for years and have never had a problem with the break in period and general use. I walk 12 miles a day at my warehouse job so footwear is important, I wanted to try a new design but now that I did I regret it. The shoe has very hard points in places where it needs to bend with the foot and it jams into the side of my foot every time I take a step. The foot bed isn't that great and my feet are generally sore at the end of the day. There are various cosmetic deterioration going on only after a few weeks of use, the shoe lace garage Salomon logo has already fallen off and the threads tend to fray around it. All in all it's a nice looking shoe but for now they will either be thrown away or put into storage.

Not a patch on the X Ultra 3 GTX which were fabulous. The lace keeper was a particularly poor design being trapped by the laces. I understand they were designed to be lighter, but they felt thinner, not as solid or supportive as the 3. The back and sides are slightly higher than the 3 which caught my ankles. And the other reviews are correct, they are a very ugly shoe. Not up to the usual Salomon standard. My advice would be to stick to the X Ultra 3 GTX which are a mastery of design and fit.

Let's just get it out in the open. Can you say Butt ugly? Well, that's what we have with these shoes.

I've been a proud owner of Salomon hiking shoes for over 10 years. After wearing these shoes for 2 days I will not be going back. Hard pinching at the sides of my feet, arches too high and heels loose.

I've been a long time fan of Salomon footwear and had many pairs of the X Ultra 3 GTX. Brought the 4's and so disappointed. Initial thoughts were, felt comfortable but very quickly noticed that my left heel was floating somewhat in the shoe whilst the right foot started to develop a pain midway down the outside of it. I had to cease one walk as the pain in the right foot was bad. Change shoes and no pain. The 4's have a plastic rib on the outside of the shoe and I think this may be the cause. Unwearable. Why change such a brilliant and proven design that was the X Ultra 3.

I'm really disappointed that there are no half sizes above size 12. I need a size 13 1/2, but you don't make them. You only make shoes that fit for people with smaller feet. So I either have to jam my toes into a 13 or I'm swimming in a14. I have worn out 2 pairs over 4 years and I loved them. I'm a trail guide so I basically live in these shoes but my feet have grown a tiny bit, and now i can't replace them. Disappointing

I was excited to buy my first pair of professional hiking shoes but I'm really disappointed in these. They are so narrow they hurt my entire foot and the inside tips of my big toes and there is no way to adjust the laces no help the situation. I compared to all my other hiking shoes and these are by far the narrowest hiking shoes I've ever see. Also they are not waterproof. I walked through some deep water so water got into the shoe and into my socks which is OK but after hiking several miles the outside of the shoe was completely dry but I noticed that water from INSIDE my shoe was leaking out which means water will also leak in from these points. See pics. Will not be buying Salomons again

I bought this shoe as my 2-year old pair of Ultra 3's were by far one of the best hiking shoes I had ever bought. I thought I would splurge this time and buy a gortex pair and upgrade to the new 4's. This was a big mistake. The shoes are great except for one glaring flaw that makes them unwearable for me. The right shoe is perfect, but the left shoe has this hard line, in the fabric, that cuts across my big toe and applies a great deal of pressure on the joint closest to my foot. I thought maybe they just needed to be broken in so I pressed on through the pain for several weeks of steady wear. No change in the pressure and with every step, pain that makes me want to turn around, abandon the hike and go home. Now I'm stuck with practically brand new shoes I can't wear.

Like other reviewers I bought these to replace a pair of Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX which I had found to be a great, snug, comfortable, fit. These are a wider shoe than the Ultra 3 from the toe to the heel so my feet tend to move, especially at the heel. They also have higher, stiffer, sides, particularly around the ankle, which is more of a problem. The material here digs into my outer right ankle and leaves lingering pain to the extent that I am no longer able to comfortably use the shoes. Shoe fit is very personal and for some these will be a great fitting pair of shoes that will serve them well but for me they have been a painful, expensive, disappointment.

These shoes are horrible. They are the most unbreathable shoes I've ever worn. Wearing them for an hour makes my feet sweaty and the shoes damp. Haven't had the shoes fall apart yet after 3 months which Salomon is famous for. Although I rarely wear them anymore.

Finally, Salomon created an X Ultra shoe that is not narrow and has a wider toe box! The Ultra 4's fit amazing on my feet. Shoes are super light, has good support/cushion, and the non-GTX pair I got had great softness/flexibility bending at the toes. Quick lace system worked great. Thought I found the perfect hiking shoes. And then noticed what some other reviewers were saying, that the top outer edges dig into the ankles as they were made too high. That one major flaw made the shoes unusable, so sadly will be returning them and hence the 1 star rating. So close to a 5, yet so far. Hopefully the X Ultra 5 gets it right. But will try the Ultra 4 mids as I'm hoping they will not have the same issue as they should fit above my ankles to not dig in.
