I have had several pairs of Salomon walking shoes in the past, all amazing and some continue to perform after 8 hours hiking. However the fit on these are very poor, very narrow and sides are too stiff for flexibility. I got the size I have had for the past 4/5 years, including the same size from a pair of Ultra 3's last autumn, however these are not good.

Why do companies take a shoe that people love, and then change it to be something they do not like? People depend on the shoes they love.

Very disappointed in the medium width, which is what I had ordered from LLBean previously. It is definitely not a medium width. I will be returning this product. Cannot comment on anything but the fit at this point.
Disappointed,

I had better luck with the older models of this shoe. The latter iterations of this shoe just doesn't hold up. It's alot of money for a so-so nothing special pair of shoes. I'm actually back to wearing the Brooks beast for walking. I bought a heavier walking shoe for tougher terrain but I probably haven't worn them enough to plug them either way.
XULTRA still a comfortable shoe but newer models just doesn't hold up.

I don't know why, but this pair I bought kinda sucks compared to the ones I bought last time and they are the exact same shoe! I remember these things being comfortable, but they are not at all anymore They rub against my ankle and after being in them all day my feet were sore and that's not just because they are "new." On the positive they are durable as can be, tough as nails and they are in fact completely waterproof, which is crucial for me. That's why I bought them again, but I have to admit, these things are bugging my feet this time and I am disappointed.

I have had 4 pairs of these and was looking to get a new pair. They have been great over the years - comfortable, durable, sturdy hikers. However, for whatever reason Salomon decided to reduce the material around the toe box which make a scrunched fit for your toes which is not conducive to hiking up and down trails. I tried to size up but it did not fix the issue.
The reduced narrower toe box is a non starter for me so after 4 pairs of these I have to move on. Sad to see you go Salomon. I don't understand the rationale for this redesign other than saving you a few pennies.

I bought the shoes 7 months ago and I have walked around 70-80km. They are quite comfortable but the outer lining has worn out very fast. This is a bit disappointing. I noticed that it has already started tearing apart on the other side of the shoe. This makes it not very waterproof.

This is my second pair of Ultra 4 GTX. First was with suede/nubuck upper and was almost perfect. This pair is with synthetic upper, green color. After first hike material had bad stains from sweat. I managed to clean them. But several hikes further if the shoes becomes damp due to water or sweat it stays stained. I did not experienced anything similar with any other shoe (also with Salomon Quest 4). It seems materials or glue used decreased in quality significantly.

The shoe was comfortable at first. After several miles I was getting hot spots. This is my 13th pair of Solomon trail running shoes and the first pair to give me blisters.
And the fabric is delaminating after 25 miles of hiking.
I'm going to try to get the previous versions that have worked so incredible well for me.

They seem to have changed these since the last 10 pairs I've bought of various models. They are much wider and the top fabric gets bunchy when you cinche them down for narrow feet. Also the tongue was slightly too short to be able to stuff the buckle into the tongue like before.

Like many others on here, my experience with these has been disappointing. The inner lining of the shoes has blown at the heel, leading to blisters each time I wear them. Previous Salomon shoes lasted me for years - these have been rendered useless within months.
Definitely not up to the usual quality I would expect from Salomon. I strongly recommend avoiding these.

Hi,
I wanted to complain about the Salomon's X ultra 4 gtx.
I've had them for only four months now and the bottom of the heal is bald and the fabric is falling apart I have been taking very good care of them as if I'll do anything rough at all I'll swap shoes I haven't gone into water in them climbing or running not even approaches.
I can't wear them anymore due to the inside of the heel is torn up and peeling the skin on my Achilles heel I'm very disappointed with this as there flagship hiking shoe.
It works very well now the gortex walking in wet grass but rain or more it'll come in but it does better then most but a normal leather la sportiva will do better against the rain. Quicklace is nice but half the time I have to readjust them not as quick as u think. They are comfy but a problem is u can stand on a ledge easily with the side as the foot as the shoe wants to give and mould around it instead of support you. I have found the grip of the shoe to be lacking to as if u only have half of the sole on a rock it won't have a good enough contact patch and it will slip normally u can use half a sole but with these at an angle u need about 80% contact. The tread also looks like it will do really good in light mud but it doesn't at all light gravel and dry dirt is all and not the best still.
I will attach the photo of the shoes.

I've had these shoes for over a year now but hardly wear them, the main reason is they smell. I never have a problem with any other shoes or boots, or indeed the previous model 3 which I used until they fell apart after about two years.
Also anyone who had the 3 will tell you they are a lot comfier.
Another issue I have is the plastic lace re enforcement down the side of the shoes creat pinch points that eventually compromise the gortex liner.
Moved onto Scarpa.

I bought these as my new primary shoe and ordered 1/2 size up from my normal size as advised by Salomon. Too bad I didnt recieve the same advice last year when I bought my normal size shoe. I now have a small sized back-up that I jam my toes into.
Other than this sizing issue, these are some great shoes that provide great support and long waterproof wear for "hard use".

Firstly i really like the design. They are easy to put on and take off, look nice, and feel sturdy when walking. The waterproof is pretty perfect so far (surprising as Goretex is really hit and miss). The issue is that the shoes - on the side - doesnt have the structural integrity to hold its shape, and it folds in and creates a sharp edge into my foot. I have tried everything - more tight laces, less tight, manually moving it to try and flatten the inward crease, etc, but every time I wear them it hurts my feet. I should have sent them back immediately but I thought over time it would sort itself out. Would not recommend, as I'm sure this can happen in other shoes with this design.

I loved all other boots from here, but not these sneakers. feel like a longer fit and flat. total opposite from the boot version. from best boot i ever put my foot in, to worst shoe. Dont like them at all. From fit, to laces, to total comfort. I will try to return if that is a real thing after wearing them two days...?
Also, loved the boots but they just seem to last me 9 months as I use them every day for landscape work. they are shot at the end of the season.

so many great thing about this shoe but the height of the heal compared to the toe is not good. would be nice is salomon made a boot with a lower heel for mountain athletes.

Bought this hiking boot (Wide version) for Patagonia trip. But after only 2 days and 40 km, there are 2 cracks on the left front side (inside, right near where the front upper sheet joins the side wall), and the cracks getting deeper quickly. After only 80 km ,there are a few places where the threads broke. Luckly there is no rain in the first few days. After a week when hike in light rain, water begin to seep in after about one hour.
The quality of this boot is very disappointing.

Bought some of ultra 4s as I could no longer find any 3s. The 3 were amazing they were at one with my feet! I have been wearing the ultra 3s for years and many pairs.
The 4s are not as comfortable in fact not very comfortable at all. I am struggling with them I will have to try another make.

I have used Salomon shoes for years and have been through loads of pairs for hiking, road running, trail running and every-day use. I have this model in a boot and bought the shoe version in exactly the same size, width and model as a second pair for a two month hike but I'm going to need to hope the boots last as I couldn't walk more than a mile in these, they crease across the top of the shoe when they bend and press down onto the top of your foot whenever you walk. As the foot bends the shoe doesn't bend with it, it just creases on the top and is really uncomfortable to walk in. It's very disappointing as I have had loads of Salomon shoes that have been super comfortable and lasted well.

Have the previous version and it fit great. This new model is different. Stiff. The toe box buckels and presses on the top of my foot. Could not wear had to return. Hope they work this kink out loved the older version.
