I've had at least 6 pairs of X-Ultra (original, 2, 3, and now 4) over the years. They've been my go-to shoe for everyday wear and light hiking. The 4 has taken a big step in the wrong direction. As some other reviews have commented, the pocket for stashing the lace pull is harder to use; the super tall piece sticking strangely up from the heel is uncomfortable and constantly interferes with pant cuffs. And most importantly, something about the black plastic-y pieces on the sides and the way the laces tighten has changed the overall feel & comfort for the worse.
I should have just returned them but wore them for a while in the hopes they'd get better over time. I ended up donating them to Goodwill and tracking down a pair of X-Ultra 3 instead. But soon there won't be any 3s left to find and then...not sure what I'll do but the 4s are not an option.
Solomon if you're listening please go back to the drawing board and make the "5" version of this shoe a winner again, thanks!!! :)

This isn't the first time buying this shoe but this pair felt like there was a defect in right shoe. The arch felt very stiff and was uncomfortable. Returning for another pair and hoping I don't have the same problem.

I echo other reviews about the ultra 4 is a disappointment when compared to the 3. I also agree with the 4 being too narrow. I cant wear the 4s due to the tightness of the shoe at the toes. You lost a very loyal customer.

These shoes run extremely narrow, a trend i have seen solomon applying fairly universally over the last three years. For the first time in 6 years I had to buy a wide. Initial try on felt good, but after walking in them for a while, there is clearly a flex point just in front of the arch, about where your toes start. There is a lump of material where the shoe tongue starts that presses down on the top of your foot when the shoe flexes. This is because they changed the way the membrane is laid out, where the old stiffer material held the membrane in place, it now can move a little.and bunch up. Fighting with the fit, you can resolve this, but the last thing you want to do is fight your shoes while hiking. I loved my x ultra 3s (although my 2021s were also too narrow) and still enjoy my full hikers, these have me questioning my commitment.

I bought these for The Camino de Santiago in Spain. They were great at first but after hiking 100 miles, the sole started to fall apart and the top of the shoe where the Goretex meets the toe started to tear.

I have owned three pair of ultra X shoes, the predecessor to the ultra 4X. Not nearly as good as its predecessor. Its hard to put on as its tongue slips down as you can see in other reviews. In addition, the extra lip on the back requires one to use a shoehorn to slip it on. Perfect example of too much innovation. I could not be more disappointed. I would never buy this shoe again go back to the original and Ill buy it again. The ultra X was a great shoe. The ultra 4X is it innovation gone wrong.

Looks like whoever designed this thought lighter was always better. The changes from the 3 detract from the use. The material is thin and feel cheap, the strapping on the sides is thin and cheap (detached on one side in less than a month) and WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE TONGUE! It used to be attached to the body, which made it easy to put on, but now it's detached and floppy. Maybe that saves .0001 grams, but is indicative of the poor changes from the 3. Bring back the 3!

I bought these about a month ago and I find them incredibly comfortable and sturdy. Like all my other Salomons they are made perfectly.

I have been looking for this light weight, water proof shoe for some time. I bought mens because Im a size 12 - I like the color and fit. I have narrow feet. I put them on and they were immediately comfortable and supported Ny high arch well. Then there is the tread! Walking on my ice covered driveway, they gripped and didnt slip. Salomon will always be my go to.

I've had these for about 2 weeks now and I am very disappointed! I have had Salomon shoes for the last 20 years and the last 2/3 years the quality seems to have gone down and down. The right shoe started collapsing on the inside arch from day one with the stitched material pinching my foot quite severely, I continued using them and have done about 90 miles hoping they would break in, they have only gotten worse, it almost appears like the material was warped before it was stitched, I'm currently awaiting a response to my warranty claim, previously the customer service has been excellent as these were a warranty replacement for a pair that the waterproofing failed(lack of quality again!).

Overall, I liked the shoe. It fit well although the shoe felt a little narrow and tight around my toes. There needs to be a touch more space here, especially since the feet swell up from long hikes. The arch support initially felt like it pushed up uncomfortably against the arch of my foot. But, I got used to it and my feet felt well protected and supported on my many challenging hikes on rugged and hilly Scottish trails. First time using a shoe with a lace such as this one had. It was easy to tighten and loosen, but the lace-end hung awkwardly and scraped the floor. I had to tuck it into the tongue when using public bathrooms, so it didn't scrape the floor. I did read that in a couple of other reviews before I bought it - so, caveat emptor, etc.

I purchased these a while ago wore for dog walks to test and wear in. I then took them on a week long hiking trip 70 miles in one started to split down side the next day I noticed same had happened on other by end of trip they had lost there water resistance. The warranty department have been very helpful and even gave voucher of equal cost so not all bad my opinion of these shoes not as durable compared to ultra 3 very comfortable I must admit tho and they look like amazing but must admit if they still sold ultra 3 I'd be using voucher on them

The right shoe tongue is starting to press on the top of my foot and the outside strap in the shoe is pressing on the outside of my foot near the toes. The discomfort does subside after a few miles. The tongue on the shoes is quite padded, but because it's only attached near to the front of the shoelaces and is loose on the sides, I think it has a tendency to ruckle up.
I'm having to wear the right shoe relatively loosely as a result. That's okay since I tend to use the shoes for light walking and my boots for sterner stuff, but it shouldn't be that way. Left shoe is fine, so I know it's the shape of my right foot, but other shoes don't cause this pressure.

I've had the shoes for just over a year. They've had a lot of use. The logos came off the tongue of both shoes after about a week. Not that important though. They have been comfortable and have great support and grip. A few months ago both shoes started to let water in, even when walking through dew covered grass. These shoes were awesome, until they started to fall apart.

I can't remember the last time I had to 'break' a shoe in. But, the high back on my new Ultra 4's is proving a tough one to crack. Only had them a few days and will continue breaking through the sore heels, praying that they'll shape properly soon??? Other than this point (that didn't exist in the previous 5x Salamon trainers I've owned) they're great qualtiy. Fingers crossed they break soon!?

As a long term regular user, along with my family, I have always found the X Ultra to be superbly comfortable. Bought three pairs to replace three pairs for family. The three reviews below sum up the problems I am having; too narrow in the base, uncomfortable heel cup and sole, tongue disappears and they are more difficult to get on as a result. Have sent in a contact form, as I am generally a big fan of this shoe.
I have just noticed that the advice now is to buy a size bigger than your normal Salomon shoe, maybe this is the issue?

Having had two pairs of these shoes and found them to be very comfortable, I ordered another two pairs as replacements. What I have discovered is that shoe tongue is separate and nor an integral part of the shoe - so when I am putting them on the tongue disappears into the shoe with my foot. The shoes are not as wide as my previous pairs and are difficult to put on. There is no way I could wear a pair of 'boot' socks - I would never get my feet into them! Once I have my feet in the shoe, they are very comfortable! I should have sent them back, but it is quite a fuss to do this.

Purchased about month ago. Have work almost every day to work. Not super impressed with the comfort level of the shoes. Very stiff sole and lacing support system seems to be off in some way. I have had these systems in prior shoes, but something isn't right with these

Bought these some time ago, had nothing but issues with the fit. The ankle support digs in really bad and was quite stiff causing quite some discomfort. However Salomon we're really helpful and their customer service was 10/10. Really great company, couldn't recommend more as far as service goes.

Pros - good support, good heal lock, relatively light weight, great sole and grip in a variety of conditions with self cleaning lugs, quick lacing system very convenient.
Cons - build quality not up to the mark, outer fabric developed a whole after 5/6 weeks of use along the flexing point, gore-tex not that breathable during spring walks, some water ingress after walking through wet grass, the housing to store the lacing system on the tongue needs to be better design to make more useful with less conflict with the laces when the shoe is in use.
Overall - Could be a great shoe but build quality and design improvements requirement.

The shoes themselves aren't hurrendous but, S other reviewers have said, the 3s are much better. I wish companies would resist tinkering with great shoes and, more often that not, making them worse. It's like Facebook. Used to be great. But they keep messing around with it to make it better, but they change things that don't need changing, and just make it worse. These feel plasticky, the fit has changed, and it's not that they're bad - they're just now where near as good as previous versions.
I definitely wouldn't recommend white. They look good initially but, the second they get muddy, they just look rubbish from then on and the cross hatched area just looks filthy forevermore.
