I almost don't know how to describe this shoe. I LOVED the color and the look of the shoe but I was absolutely disappointed in the fit. I usually wear an 8 1/2 to a 9 Wide and almost always have trouble with the big toe on my right (wider)foot because my toes turn up and spread out.
Well with this shoe I put the right shoe on and was beginning to get my hopes up and then I put on the left shoe. YIKES I don't know if I just got a defective pair but where the sole attaches to the upper the inside arch area was like walking on the sharp edge of the sole. I took them off and ran my finger around the insde and sure enough you can feel the rim of the sole all the way around and it was really prominent around the inside arch. I am sending them back but I am really disappointed because I loved the color and the 9D appeared to fit me in length. Even though the 9D didn't feel roomy it was doable.
My advice on these shoes would be that even the wide isn't really wide. It probably wouldn't work for really wide feet. Also err on the side of caution and if you are close to a size I would size up.

This is my 4th pair of Hokas. Love love loved the Clifton 3s so much i had 2 pairs. I tried the 4s, and they were awful. So narrow and uncomfortable. So, that being said I had the Napolis. They were incredibly reminiscent of the Clifton 3s, however after less than 3 months I had to do a warranty exchange due to poor quality of the uppers. Both shoes completely blown out. So, I was excited about the Clifton 5s. I thought well Hoka really missed the boat on the 4s, maybe they listened to the hordes of Clifton fans and go back to the 3 design.
First impression: roomier toe than the 4. However, really lacking in a cushy response. (I understand They aren't classed as "cushy") They are not super comfortable. They are actually more comfy when I put my custom orthotics in. So, I will try them and see if my opinion changes.

I was wearing the Clifton 4 and loved it so I was hopeful for this version. Sadly, the changes they made to this version didn't fit my feel well. The size and width feel the same, but support must have changed because just trying them on around my house gave me some ankle soreness.

I have been running in the Hoka Clifton model for about 8 months now, and am absolutely in love. I don't want to run in any other shoe besides hokas! However - i'm pretty disappointed with these shoes ability to last, especially me most recent pair of Hoka 5's. These shoes split at the seam after wearing them for only 4 weeks. Yes I run every day, but these shoes are made for runners - runners who run A LOT. They should be able to last for the required 500 miles of training usually prescribed for a change of shoes, not after 300 miles. Please make the seam stronger on the inside of the shoe near the big toe!

PLEASE, PLEASE BRING BACK THE Clifton 3. The toe box on 5 is too narrow on the 5. Tired of waiting for a remake of the 3. Might order it in wide and see if that works. I wear a AA by the way.

Even standing in these shoes had me standing on the outside of my feet. I must have ordered the wrong shoe for my problem.

They fit well, but once the feet warm up the toe box is too tight. I love the snugness of the heal and modern look with style and color, but bring back the feel of the Clifton 3 in the toe box area. Please :)

I had such high hopes for the Clifton 5. First, they look amazing. Second, they feel great when you put them on. The toe box is nice and roomy, and it doesn't feel like you'd ever have a problem with hot spots. They feel great walking around and when you start a run--nice and cushioned. But the problem is this model is too soft. The cushioning is great, but the shoe has no zip to it whatsoever. That makes it more difficult to run. You kind of sink into the trail and have to pull yourself out. Ugh. Sorry. I wanted to love them. Clifton 3 is still king.

Very frustrated by lack of room in toe box and across bridge of my foot. I generally have a narrow foot, and the heel is fine, so ordering a wide would not be the solution. Loved the Clifton 3's. Had high hopes for these and was very pleasantly surprised at the new color choices (finally, some Hokas in more muted colors without dayglo accents!).
After all the complaints about the tight/narrow toe box in the previous model you'd think Hoka would have taken that into account for the Clifton 5. Very disappointing.

This is my 5th pair of Hoka shoes and all 5 of them have torn in the exact same place long before the sole wears out. I have been buying running shoes for 30 years and have never had this happen before to any of my Nike or Asics shoes. I don't know how they are making the shoes, but something is wrong as this keeps happening over and over again.

They fit well but offer no support or comfort. I felt no arch support. Definitely not a running sneaker

I really wanted to love these. They were comfortable OOTB. On the first run, they gave me bad blisters in both arches. The insole is really rough & sharp. I thought it would wear down eventually. No luck. Even taping my arches didn't prevent them. Really bummed that they had to go back. I gave them 3 weeks.

I am a marathon and trail runner, I have been using Hoka Clifton for the last 5 years. The Clifton 5 fits terribly compared to the 6. However, the last 2 pairs of cliftons I've purchased have developed a hole near the pinky toe after 2 months.

I did a lot of research before buying these shoes. I returned them.
The right shoe had an a seem under my little toe that made the shoe painful and irritating. I did not notice this when i tried them on, but after going on a long walk my little toe was destroyed and hurt badly.
I bought the shoes looking for arch support to relieve the pain from plantar fasciitis. The arch support was insufficient for my high arches and plantar fasciitis. The shoes were very soft, and this felt great while putting them on, but really exacerbated my pain later.

As these were my first pair of "expensive" tennis shoes, I really hoped for a life-changing experience. I don't use them for running, but rather for walking. I sometimes walk up to 13 miles in one day so I wanted something to keep my feet from aching.
These shoes ended up being the most painful, uncomfortable shoes I've ever owned. After about 6 miles, my little toes both had developed bad corns on them, causing each step being excruciating. This is a problem I've NEVER had before, as my feet are quite narrow. The fabric on the toe box of these shoes is not stretchy or forgiving. Also, the heel doesn't seem to have any padding where the heel rounds out and meets the shoe. There is plenty of padding up by the ankle bone though! But each step was incredibly painful for my heels, leaving them bruised and sore for 2 days afterward.
I'll stick to my $50 Adidas shoes.

A regular exerciser for most of my life, I've recently started having foot problems in my early fifties (metatarsalgia, capsulitis, loss of fat pads, possible neuroma) and I've been searching for a comfortable shoe, which has been a tricky process. I found this shoe to be surprisingly stiff and uncomfortable. The arch area was large, unyielding, and hit my foot in the wrong area and caused pain after several hours. There was a hard ridge along the outer edge of the insole that seemed to encourage overpronation in my foot. (Although, notably, the shoe caused no pain in the metatarsal and toe area at all). I felt like I was walking on stiff planks that my foot was constantly fighting against in order to flex with its natural movement. Disappointing shoe, although I loved the style and thought they looked great (black color option). I am trying other models of Hoka shoes and hope to find one that works.

Returned the shoes. I had Clifton 4's and loved them. These were so uncomfortable just wearing around the house. They changed the arch, the upper and the cushion. Wish I could find a new pair that was just as good as the 4's

I’m very disappointed in this new version of the Clifton’s.
I’ve worn the Clifton 4 and hope the pair I have last a long time.
The Clifton 5, both knit and regular, have a stiffer, more uncomfortable sole, it makes the shoe hard and it hurts my feet.
The Clifton 4 has the perfect combination of support and a cushioned foot bed. Clifton 5, not so much.
Bring back the 4’s!!!

Disappointed in the fit of this shoe. They definitely were not cloud like and felt a half size larger than expected.

I have purchased Hoka shoes in past and loved them. But this pair I had to return. They must have changed the shoe design because these shoes actually hurt my feet. The arch was too high making my stance off & shoe cut into me also putting too much pressure on heels making them terribly sore.

I bought the Clifton 5 (fly knit) in the same size as my previous Clifton 4 (which I loved).
At the same time, I bought the torrent in the same size (which fit).
the Clifton 5 did not fit at all in the toe box- way too wide, and seemingly a size larger than expected. the material in the toe bent in a weird place making them unwearable.
I will exchange them back for the 4's probably, but unfortunately the sizing seemed so off from my other two pairs!

This shoe is a complete departure from my all-time favorite, the Clifton 3. The sole of the Clifton 3 feels soft and molded to my foot; the sole of the Clifton 5, in contrast, feels like that of a rigid surgical boot, which the shape and natural motions of my foot are at odds with. P.S. Please, Hoka. Have mercy on those of us who do not have a narrow forefoot. I am not even especially wide, but most of your shoes are unwearable for me. And the ones that are need to be stretched, stretched and stretched some more in order for my pinkie toes to not be traumatized.

I ran in the Clifton 4 for 400+ miles and loved them. Loved them. I needed new ones so bought the new version, Clifton 5. One run and I had 3 blisters. I thought maybe I just ran too long for a first run in new shoes, so I tried, tried again. They tore my feet up. I was so sad. I bought these from a local running store so cannot return them. I should have bought them online for the 30 day guarantee. I cannot wear the 5s and now I still need new running shoes.
