I've owned the previous two versions of the Clifton and I'm least happy with these of all of them. The front toe area is much smaller - even going up half a size from my last pair and in general not as cushioning. I wish I could find an older generation. I'd return them if I hadnt tried running in them. Why hoka do you keep changing this shoe? If its not broke....

So the shoe felt alright on my foot. I can easily walk in them and not experience any problems. My husband who "sold" me on buying this show as a shoe salesman thought it would help my feet issues. I honestly never had my legs cramp up so badly. I am a minimalist shoe lover and these shoes had my calves cramped, my thighs screaming in pain, and by the end of the two attempts at using them my back and hips hurt. Just wasn't the right shoe for me and my foot strike pattern.

Unfortunately, Hoka has narrowed the toe box in this new version of the Clifton running shoe. As a result my usual size is now too short. I can't go up because the next size will be far too wide. Why tinker with success, Hoka? As a result I must return these.

Have to return these. Cushioning is nice but the shoe is just too stiff overall. I need something with a low drop that is also flexible. This shoe creates soreness in the back of my arches, burning in the bottom of my feet, and my feet just feel sore. Darn, really wish these would have worked. Order a half size up if you are going to try them.

I mostly used the shoe for work, as I'm a nurse and on my feet a lot. After a few months a hole appeared over each big toe. The hole is now so big I can't use the any more- waste of money

Width almost too wide for a regular fit. I'm borderline regular/wide and like a bigger toe box but this one is almost too big. Cushion is firmer than pervious versions.

For me, the Clifton 4 is a disappointment. I loved the older Cliftons ( 2 or 3) because of the cushioning. The thickness offered me a level of rebound that helped my feet. The level of cushioning in this shoe feels different. As someone else said, I heard it was redesigned to be less cushioned so it could be more responsive. My feet liked the old version better. I too am searching for Clifton 3s to stock up on.

The shoe is suppose to be neutral but the toe box is curved. The Clifton 4's would be a much better shoe like the Clifton 3's if they had not curved the toe box. The width of the shoe felt ok to me, but with the curve of the toe box they were rubbing my outer toe and foot. The cushion in the Clifton 4's are better than the Clifton 3's. Please start making this type of shoe that are neutral and without the curved toe box and the offset of the toe box because they way more comfortable made that way.
I had to return these shoes.

I have nothing but frustration with this brand of shoe. I LOVE the cushioning, and ever so much want these shoes to work, but Hoka One One's fit runs NARROW in the toebox. I DO NOT by any means have a wide foot. I have NEVER bought wide's and always have worn an 8 regular in running shoes. I have a normal, if not narrower foot. Every pair of 8 I try on pinches me on my pinky toe (even the wide toebox Bondie style); just enough to be frustrating. And it is also just ever so slightly short, but tolerable. When I go a half size up, the shoe looks too long, although it feel "ok", but somehow maintains the "pinch" feeling, but not has bad as the 8's. There are only a few styles that have wide widths and then they only offer ONE color in it. Somehow, this brand has fallen into that "grey" area of fit that I can't handle. It's a great shoe, but Hoka One One needs to re-examine their fitting lasts, because I appear not to be the only one complaining about this.

This shoe is described as "wide" whereas the Clifton 3 is "medium". I love the Clifton 3. Very disappointed the 4 is definitely not wider. It's nice looking & light as a feather but it's going back.

I love this shoe but have to completely skip toe box laces as they are too narrow! I have received 2 emails from you stating that the Clifton 4 is now available in wides!?? I try to purchases and there are no wide selection tabs in the purchase selections! What is with that? Why are you sending out emails with false information?

I love the shoe but after about a month of minimum use (3-4 miles walking/week), the rubber part of the sole started coming off. I tried to superglue to no avail. I can no longer wear the shoes due to the annoying flapping of the sole.

I wanted this shoe so bad! Unfortunately it is too narrow in the toebox. I do not have a wide foot and medium works for me in Brooks Ghost and Asics Nimbus. I had to send it back.
I'd also recommend:
I would recommend Brooks Ghost if you are a neutral runner

The size was on the large size of true. I wouldn’t go up a size but it was definitely bigger. If I could go up a quarter size I would...
I was not impressed, sadly, with these shoes. I broke them in twice before a “longer” 5 mile run. The thick sole affected my stride enough make it uncomfortable, and also, I had some structural foot pain after that I am still tending too. The soles are just too much for me and I wouldn’t recommend this style.
They were lightweight though, so that was nice.
I won’t be buying this brand again.

These shoes do not fit me well in the arch. My feet are sore after wearing them. I have Hoka One One Clifton 3 and they are a dream shoe. I will search for that number.

I really tried to give these shoes a chance. They hurt my feet as soon as I started walking. Looking for a good walking shoe.

Cute shoes, but the shanks are really stiff and create pain on inside arch. This is the third pair I have tried and all were a fail!! Disappointed, love the cushioning for work. Unfortunately it has caused some inflammation and fasciitis on my feet.

The difference in the toe box between the 3 and the 4 is significant. I feel that I have a narrow foot and the 4's rub my toes until they are numb. I have heard others complain about the toe box being too narrow. I contacted Hoka directly and was told that the 5's had "no change" to the width of the toe box as they followed their reviews to make "other" changes. So here I am--leaving this review hoping you will give the next version a roomier toe box. For now I will have to switch brands to find what I need, though I doubt I will find any cushioning to be as good as a Hoka.

I loved my Clifton 3 and was very disappointed to hear they had been discontinued. Even though the Clifton 4 did not get rave reviews I thought I'd try them anyway. I was disappointed. The cushioning was not as good - I did NOT feel like I was running on clouds - and the arch hit me in the wrong place

This style is really hard on my arch? I usually like the Hoka cliftons or Mach for my long runs for comfort and cushioning. These make my arches hurt? It seems hard. Only in this area

My forefoot hurt after 2.5 miles and I had to stop and take breaks so my feet could recover. I had to return them because they hurt so much! These were the first Hoka's I have tried and I am not impressed. I have never ran in a pair of shoes that made me not want to run. After talking to a couple people and reading more reviews, these issues are exclusive to the Clifton 4's... I will be trying the Napali and hopefully this will change my view on Hoka's.

Super disappointed in the Clifton 4. Please bring back the Clifton 3! I've been wearing the Clifton for a long time and have loved every one, until now. This shoe doesn't have the same comfort, lightness or support I am used to. Hoping Hoka One One will go back to their previous design.

I have slightly wide feet. I don't always need to get wide shoes, but I did get these in wide. My pinky toes still rub against the sides uncomfortably, I think because the sides of these shoes get narrower too quickly going towards the toes. When I have run in these more than ~8 miles, the bottoms of my feet start to hurt. They also feel bulky and heavy, and I don't feel the pillowy feeling I loved in my older Hokas. I'm going to try more Altras, because I'm starting to feel like having that foot shape is important since Hokas aren't delivering the comfort I thought they provided.

Very disappointed in this new revamp of the Clifton series. I got the original Cliftons a couple years ago on the recommendation of my podiatrist after major injuries to my leg, hip & a badly broken ankle. They made the difference between walking and sitting on the couch. The new model is nothing like the old. Arch is moved into a strange place in the shoe which immediately caused me issues. Fleet feet told me that they have had numerous complaints about this & hoka is losing customers who relied on this shoe (instead of buying 2 pairs of hokas as I intended I bought a brooks.) The sole is hard and inflexible like a trail shoe, and gone is the wonderful cushioning in the heel. Basically everything that made this shoe worth buying despite its slightly orthopedic look has been eliminated. Thankfully they found an old unsold pair of Clifton 3s in the back so I exchanged them for those and bought a pair of brooks. What a bummer to change something that was so great! I've gotten a ton of friends and family to try out and convert to hokas. Please go back to the old design- they now feel like wearing the speedgoats with the arch in the wrong place.
