Of all the walking and hiking shoes I ever bought, this is the best. My bad feet do not hurt, with the proper insert. Unfortunately, shoes fall apart in a couple of months and cannot be repaired. This is my third pair in about a year. I would buy a more durable shoe if I could find one, but this is the best product available. New Balance used to have the highest quality shoes, but no company seems to be concerned about that anymore.

A good boot, pretty warm and waterproof. It's not as comfortable as I thought it would be.
I thought it would be more like a sneaker fit and feel broken in upon the first wear.
It's a bit stiff out of the box. We will see how the break in process goes.
Runs true to size.

Comfortable first time you put them on. Was expecting to a little wider as I order a wider. Thought they would be warmer with the 200 grams of insulation. Would buy them again.

At the SALE price, --25%, these are a good value, to me. Only 1 Real complaint: the little "loop", atop the heel area, to "pull up the boot ",...is worthless, unless you employ a hooked-device! My ManHands are unable to insert even a tip of the pinky finger into the RIDICULOUSLY --Tiny loop of fabric mounted here! Ugh!

Fits well, comfortable, waterproof BUT it's difficult to put on without a shoehorn because the opening is a bit too small to slip your foot in.

It is a good pair of men's boots but the comfort inside could have been softer like the regular new balance running shoes.

I primarily bought these boots to keep my feet dry when I'm walking in long grass during the rainy season. It's too early to be sure that they work properly but I'm relying on NB's reputation here. So for now I'm giving it 4 stars but I could easily upgrade to 5 after the rainy season starts.
I can say that feel comfortable for me to use for general hiking

I was deciding between the 978's and the 1400's. I chose the 1400's because they were more cushioned on the inside. The 978's got pretty pointy towards the front of shoe, causing a little pain in the toes; and that was with the x-wide shoe (4E). If the 1400's had come with the rock stop plate of the 978's, they would be absolutely perfect!

Great shoe for those who work on their feet, walk in the woods or splash in the rain.

I ordered a men's size 7 wide as ladies 8.5 wide has not been in stock for 6 months. I have a delicate foot problem and the NB 1400 are the only boots that my feet are comfortable in. I have worn NB 1400 for about 5 years. They only last about 6 months before they are no longer waterproof.
The men's boots are a bit big but my feet are happy. Sure wish the ladies 1400 were in stock. Great boots even though waterproofing does not last very long.

I use these boots for walking on and off trails.I like the support, the comfort, that they are waterproof, and seem to have good traction. I think they run a bit small, but I expected this and I worked with the salesman at Schuler Shoes in Woodbury, MN, and ended up getting boots a half size larger and the next width larger. They seem to fit fine over medium-thick socks. The only other thing is that the laces could be a bit longer, like 4 inches/10 centimeters more. I have only had these about 10 days or so. Assuming these hold up, I will definitely purchase them again when the time comes.

I've had a couple of pairs of the 1400s. A good shoe for walking after you break it in, but I probably wouldn't use it for a long hike. It does fit a little snug, but the 4E width is difficult to find with other brands. The shoe does keep you dry in a light rain, but I have ended up with soaked socks in a downpour.

When I ordered I received a discount (reason?). Wrong size so I had to return for refund and reorder. On the reorder there was no discount
Good comfortable boots but I wish we could get a light vibram sole

I liked the 1400 for its comfort and the fact that it is water proof. I used my first pair of 1400 for hiking and yard work and had several good years of use. Unfortunately, the sole separated from the top of the shoe of my first pair after all of this wear, but I just bought another pair and looking forward to several years of use.

The fit seemed a little small. The leather is very soft and seems thin. The soles on the bottom of the boot were much to be desired if you're looking for something with good traction

A very soft leather with little traction. Definitely too small considering I ordered the size I normally wear with new Balance. Considering the price these were disappointing.

These seem like nice boots, but they fit me too tight when I bought the size I always wear. I had to return them. I may try a wide width.

I own many pairs of New Balance shoes as my 4E feet have few manufacturers to choose from. These boots were not up to par in sizing. The length was short in both boots and the width was narrower than the 4E size. Design and manufacture both appeared satisfactory but these were built off a different last than any other NB footwear I own.

Light and warm boot for winter wear. Availability in wider sizes is a plus. Fit is fine. Had to buy a half size up (lengthwise) because half size was not available.

I bought these boots knowing I was going to put them through the wringer, since that's what I do.. They did take a whole bunch of miles of on and off road walking to break in properly.. I decided to really see what they were made of and took them as my backup boots on a six day Idaho Backcountry Elk hunt. I found the first day wearing them that they rolled way too much in steep terrain and that the foot box was not built for hardcore trekking like that so they became my camp shoes. They did hold up great in the icy conditions we faced there in the Idaho mountains and again on a more recent trip to Japan. Walking 10-12miles a day in comfort in the city or on a mild trail is not a problem for me in these boots. They are well built and will be getting another pair very soon.

I wear hiking boots 99.999% of the time, and these are nice. Fit might be a teeny bit narrow, but otherwise good. I like the fact they are smooth leather rather than the "rough-out" of many other hiking boots. I actually have 2 pairs; one for working and everyday wear, and a pair that I keep clean for going out in public. The only thing I don't like, and this is annoying enough to subtract one rating star is this : The leather loop on the back of the boot at the top - I'm guessing its purpose is to allow one to put a finger through and pull up to pull the boot on ? That's what I have alway done, anyway. Well, the loop is too small to put my finger through, so it is useless.

These boots are well built. However, they were heavy. Not for someone who is overweight and loves to walk..
