I went on a few short pleasure trips and a few hiking treks and this Surge bag was perfect .. Very lightweight and great for the back .. Feels like you caring nothing on your back .. Plus very roomy for everything I needed .. I must tell you all , get the Surge backpack , you will not regret it .. It will serve for all your needs .. Strong construction as well .. Pockets Galour .. Too bad there are no TNF stores in Florida , I do visit the stores throughout the States ..

I bought this pack because my previous laptop backpack was on the way out and I'm headed overseas a couple of times in the next few months and wanted something that would be useful. Pack is extremely comfortable and functional. It should serve me well in the Andes.

I use it every day to bring my laptop to/from work. Also plenty of space to use as a carry-on, I love that I don't have to take my laptop out, I just have to unzip it. Also has tons of room for my school books and supplies as I get ready to go back to school!

After years of having the world's most uncomfortable laptop bag, I started traveling for work a few months ago. One trip through the Orlando airport and I was done with my old bag. After an extended research period, I decided on the Surge and it was a great decision. The shoulder straps align perfectly for me. The loop handle on front is extremely handy when getthe the bag out of the back seat. The back laptop compartment has plenty of room below the laptop sleeve for my charging cables. The next compartment has more room for client files than I'll ever be able to use and the front compartment has enough zippers and sleeves to keep all my stuff (ie, my junk) from rolling around. But my favorite component are the straps on the two corners that binds everything up to keep the bag nice and tight on my back. This thing is a breeze to travel with and I have no doubt that, based on the durable design, I'll have this thing for years to come with no trouble at all.

The compartments are too small/tight. I carry a 3 subject notebook, a slim folder & a paperback to read on my commute in one compartment & I can barely fit my hand into it to get things in & out. Same w/ the main from compartment w/ all of the pockets - the contents of my purse go in there (hand sanitizer, small iPhone charger, gum, Kleenex, compact, lip balm, sunglasses) & there is almost no room for my smaller than most wallet. Again, I can barely reach in to find things & take them out. So frustrating! And if I take my laptop to class in its compartment, there's no room for anything else in that one. Even more frustrating is that it doesn't keep my water bottle snug & it falls out constantly. Makes me crazy. Also, the thin straps that hang from the arm straps (which are uncomfortable) get caught on the desks at my college. I never thought a backpack could be so poorly designed & fraught with issues.

I am a college student and I use it daily for classes and what not. Honestly, I think that this backpack is not big enough. The pocket for the laptop sleeve is GREAT! The only thing about that pocket is that if your laptop is in that pocket then there isn't room for anything else in this pocket. The second pocket is great size and can fit a lot... as long as you don't put anything in the back pocket or the very front. All the pockets seem to run into each other and take up space in another area. You can't really fit much into the backpack. Poor design.

I work overseas for a non-profit, so I end up flying or traveling by train a lot. This backpack is really ideal for me since the design is really focused on travel, and also has a laptop compartment (a must for my job). It works perfectly when I am running out the door, grabbing a train or bus on a weekend trip. So far it has served me really well, and I can't wait to see how it holds up over the long-run of my traveling lifestyle!

Love this bag so much I bought 2! First bought one for my girlfriend whose in law school and saw how great it was and how much she enjoyed it I bought myself one for work. Absolutely worth the price and will probably be the last backpack you buy because it's the only one you'll ever need! Can fit a lot of different things in there and it feels like it's empty! Love it!

I use this for carrying my books and laptop around at college. The structure is great and it's very spacious. I docked one star because the bag isn't as comfortable as other reviews promised.

I bought this back for my daughter who decided to go back to college to earn her PHD in climate change studies. We had already bought two other NF backpacks a few months earlier for our twin grandsons who had graduated from high school last spring and they too have gone off to college, all three are outdoor people and the choice of North Face in other clothing and gear purchased in the past made this purchase easy, so we knew that North Face makes an outstanding product with so many options to choose from it is not hard to find one that is just right for your needs.

I use this backpack for school and trips, and it is fantastic. It has plenty of pockets, so everything stays organized as I run across campus, and it is comfortable to carry for long periods of time. There is a surprising amount of room to books, or anything else you have. All-around great backpack.

I'm using the backpack for school right now. It works great for a few textbooks, but more than 3 or 4, won't work. I've used it for day travel a couple of times, and it has worked great. The straps are amazing for a backpack, I've only really seen straps that good on a more rucksack type of backpack. The laptop area is very nice and padded on all sides, including bottom! It can hold a lot of weight without being uncomfortable. Overall it is just a very sexy backpack, that is the reason I bought it. The extra colors are amazing and I couldn't find them on any other backpack!

I use this backpack for daily use, going to and from campus, and carrying all of my books and supplies. The amount of pockets are great for the variety of things I have to take with me. I can fit notebooks for four classes, my laptop, planner, a pair of shoes, scrubs, and much more. The only thing is that the straps don't always stay the same length, but that is easily fixable.

I purchased the Surge backpack online for my son for school. We have had them before and they are excellent backpacks. However, the one we received had a faulty zipper, which we discovered when we tried to zip it shut the first day of school. I didn't have any of the info that came with the bag, not even the order number. I called Customer Service. They looked up my order by my name, sent me a FedEx mailing label and put a new one in the mail within one day. The new backpack arrived within a week, and has the usual NF quality. Easiest exchange I have EVER made.

My friend was super excited to pack his new backpack for a trip to NY and for other traveling needs. He has always wanted one but he hadn't found one that is as practical and efficient as this one. Also, being that it's NorthFace he is sure he will have it for years to come. I got massive brownie points for this gift!

I wanted to love this bag. It has so many good reviews and The North Face is known for their great quality. It definitely is well built and could easily last for many years....but it is way too uncomfortable for me to wear. The back panel of the bag is stiff....which means when I put the bag on it hits right at my lower back area. I have had lower back problems for years, I am sure partly due to my constant use of backpacks. But anyway, since it hits right in that area, it literally hurts to wear this bag. I have fiddled with the straps and all and cannot seem to find a position where it is not in a bad place. I tried so hard to make it work, but I have realized it just isn't a good fit for me. I guess next time I will make a trip to a store and try them on in person before purchasing.
