I was looking for a waterproof multi-surface walking/light hiking shoe for travel. I found these and saw all of the great reviews, but after wearing them for over a week while traveling and walking over 10 miles a day in them through Paris and Berlin, I'm not impressed. They certainly don't meet my expectations for comfort and stability under 'real world' and urban use (compared to the reviews of other owners of this model). I wore the shoes casually around town for several weeks to break them in (and I'm on my feet all day walking as part of my job), but after a few days I had blisters on both heels and on some other spots that were rubbed by the inside of the shoe. These shoes pinched in weird places across the top of the foot after extended walking. I don't usually have problems with blisters - I walked all over Iceland in a pair of Adidas street mids and they were more comfortable (but not waterproof). My regular Nike 6.0s are more comfortable for extended wear, and just about as stable. Whenever I stepped on wet metal (sewer grates, manhole covers, the stairs of the Eiffel Tower) I had to double check my footing and slipped several times in these shoes, even after scraping the 'new' off the soles on rough concrete in the break in period - again, not something I've ever had an issue with in shoes half the price that aren't even designed for that kind of use, so that was pretty disappointing (and dangerous). Basically I expected a lot more comfort and support for the price, especially after the glowing reviews here on Zappos, and won't be going with Merrell next time. These might be a good choice if you're walking around in a forest, or only using these on a trail, but I can't recommend them for urban/crossover use when there are better options out there. The tread tended to pick up and pack in any mud or soft earth that I tracked through when walking off the sidewalk or in parks. The plus is that they are waterproof as advertised - my feet never got wet, even when standing in more than an inch of water.

I've had 2 pair, they tend to wear out after roughly a year. My last pair was bought 10-18-2012, today is 11-03-2013 and I'm ordering a replacement. If they were a bit more durable, I'd give them more than 3 stars. But for that 1 year, they are warm, dry, comfortable, and are just phenomenal shoes.

This Merrell Moab is an excellent all terrain shoe, this is my second pair. However, I have found this recent shoe to be slightly not true to size, it is smaller and not as comfortable as the early pair.

I have owned two pairs of these Gore-Tex Moabs and I have to say the experience between the two was very different. The first pair I bought and the very next day broke them in on an 8 mile round trip to the summit of mount Algonquin in the Adirondacks. The moabs were amazing. Grip that never failed. Comfort that never disappointed. The Gore-tex kept my feet dry in the numerous stream crossings. This first pair went on to perform amazingly for about a year. I wore the tread down to the point that it was practically polished smooth.
The 2nd pair is a different story... The construction integrity of the upper was sub-par at best. I began seeing fraying and other seam strains within a month. I would not have been surprised if some one had told me that I had been given a non-Gore-Tex version as I never once experienced any water-resistance with the shoes. The support was also short lived in this pair. As was the tread. Now I will say that at the time I was working as a videojournalist in Western NY, so the tread likely had it rough with extensive time spent on pavement/concrete. I have read reviews on other shoes with Vibram treading that mentioned a substantially shortened lifespan due to such "terrain." This hard ground could also be attributed to the issues with insole support.
Regardless of these last two issues, I was disappointed to find myself looking for a new shoe in less than 6 months... The overall impression was one of degradation in build quality.
I do still recommend people to check out these shoes, but I do so with extensive explanation on my experiences. I still feel that if you are going to be spending your time in these shoes on the trails, they should be amazing (though unsure about the Gore-tex now), but if you are planning to use them as everyday shoes on all surfaces... I'd say you should expect a short life-cycle.

I bought this shoes for my trip to the Peruvian Andes. I had to exchange it for a half size larger and didn't wear them until I was there. What a mistake, the fit was tight and uncomfortable, it felt like a wide shoe, no adequate support, etc. I took them off and wore my North Face boots instead. Originally I wanted to buy The North Face shoes but apparently, they have discontinued them. I wouldn't recommend this Merrell to anyone.

I bought the Moabs for a change as I wore down the Chameleon3 Stretch as I really loved the form and functionality of the shoes. I bought the same size as my Chameleon, after wearing the Moabs for a day my feet hurt. The width was a tad tighter than the Chameleons so I had to change to thinner socks. The first thing I noticed versus my old pair was the weight of the Moabs, they are so light and felt like the sole was so thin that twigs would puncture them anytime. Anyway, the most annoying thing about these shoes are the laces. They never fail to untie themselves every 30 minutes or so however tight you tie them.

Great shoe but I wish it fit a little better. I felt shoe was true to width but my toes are scrunched a little, and I felt it was true to size though my heel slips a little. Shoes are uncomfortable over long durations but tolerable enough for rainy days when warm, dry feet are a must.

A decent shoe for the money, could have lasted longer. They have been really comfortable but the laces broke about a month into them and they are beginning to hurt my feet. I've had them a few months now and wear them daily.

I bought a pair of these a couple years ago and they were great, except for one thing. The soles kept coming unattached from the uppers. Within a couple of weeks after purchasing them, I had to glue the sole back on at the big toes with "Shoe Goo". I had to do that two more times until I finally gave up and bought a replacement pair of shoes. I hope this problem is not common for this shoe, but just in case it is, I bought something else to replace mine.

These otherwise terrific shoes did not hold up. Both shoes experienced separation of the sole from the uppers after only about 4 months of wear. Other than that, they were terrific. I was specifically looking for a shoe made with Gore-Tex, and this was one of the few I found that fit the requirements. If they had held up, they would have been absolutely perfect, but their unfortunate disintegration is not offset by their other stellar qualities.

I found the shoe initially very comfortable, since these were the widest shoes I have ever owned. After wear, however, I discovered that the excess width in the heel and forefoot resulted in sliding side to side and front to rear, for a very uncomfortable result. If I try this shoe again it will be in a D width - given the E width felt wider than any 4E I have ever tried, the D width might be right for my 2E wide feet.

A nine month review. Pros: Fits well, waterproof, great traction, nice style, and not terribly heavy, and not as hot as I expected. Cons: Laces come undone frequently, Toe rubber coming undone, squeaks when walking. I sent the first two pairs back as the sole and upper on the right shoe weren't glued on straight. Quality control must be weak. After receiving a properly assembled pair, they served me well for eight months. The rubber on the toe is peeling off of the left shoe and the right shoe has now developed a squeak with every step, which would be fine for a clown, but not me. These shoes are now the shoes I wear when I ride my mountain bike that has the pinned platform pedals, which turns out to be an excellent use for them. They grip the pedals well, have the traction needed for the terrain in which I bike. Cleans easily, too. I wanted to like these shoes, but there are just too many shoes in this price-point to deal with quality this low. My experience with these shoes kept me from buying some Tough Gloves, which I really wanted to try. Ecco got the nod as replacements for these less than one-year-old shoes.

I love the way these shoes look, but after hiking in them for an hour, I very much regretted my purchase. They hurt my feet to the point that I had to stop my hike, go back to the car and change shoes. Most of the reviews on these shoes are very good, so maybe it\'s just my feet that don\'t do well in them.

Really wanted to like these shoes. But, unfortunately, they hurt my feet. Don't really understand why. I guess my feet and these shoes are just not meant for each other.

Very comfortable from the first time I put shoe on. Was replacing my Timberlands of similar style, and they no longer make my previous shoe, so had to shop around. Hope they last as long as my Timberlands did! Only negative is the Gore-tex lining from the toe area is a bit crinkly and loud sounding when I walk. I never been able to hear this with any other brands lined with Gore-tex. Had to go up 1/2 size from what I usually wear which puts the shoe slightly to large in length as I apparently in between sizes with this brand.

Good shoes. They don’t wick as well as I hoped. My feet stay a little damp all the time. The Patagonias I bought at the same time have been much better.

This shoe looks good and so far is waterproof, but is not the most comfortable hiking/walking shoe I have bought. It is somewhat stiff and is taking a long time to break in. It feels a little small for my normal size, and maybe a 1/2 larger size would feel better, but then it might be sloppy. I should have sent it back right away, but without wearing it for a few days, it is hard to tell if it is too small.

I purchased these shoes in March 2009 and was initially satisfied with them. They are comfortable, and the fact that they were lined with Gore-Tex was even better. For a while they seemed great. After a few months of daily use, I noticed that water would penetrate the shoe very easily, and they gained a very annoying squeak when walking. Cut to October 2009, and the upper is starting to detach from the sole of the right shoe, which lets plenty of water in at the toe box. They still squeak, and the laces tend to untie themselves on occasion. Now, they are still comfortable, but the feature that convinced me to buy them (waterproof) has been defeated, and they are just a regular pair of shoes. These are probably not worth the price that is asked. I have other pairs of Merrell shoes, and they are fantastic, even after lots of wear. These just do not stand up in the long term. Just my two cents' worth: I have a 3-year-old pair of Nike Gore-Tex shoes that still maintain their original waterproof abilities. I guess I'll stick with those for a little longer.

Really wanted to love these shoes because they are light weight and nice looking - they run at least one whole size small and my toes were still scrunched when I ordered a larger size. Because I had worn them I could not send back. I gave them to a friend. Probably good for people with a narrower foot. My feet are pretty normal, not wide nor narrow.

A follow up to my June 10 post June. Well folks here I am ordering a new pair to replace these. Here are my findings. The laces were some of the worst that I have ever had. I had to double knot them several times a day or trip on them. The factory insole did not last a month. Buy what you like. For me it will not be Merrel again.

These did not last a year. The sole almost completely detached on the right shoe. Usually, after a year or two, I retire the old light hikers to gardening duty. These did not last that long. Also, they were never waterproof. From day one, they leaked somewhat. I had to change socks after walking the dog in the morning. Holes appeared in the side of the shoes (where the foot bends at the ball off the toe), and then they leaked even more. My suede converse sneakers leaked less and held up better. I would not recommend these. Which is a shame, because there are not many light hikers that come in widths. And New Balance keeps changing/discontinuing theirs. I just want to walk the dog a mile or so in the morning (and go on a few hikes) without springing a leak or my feet sweating too much. Oh well.

Warning: the website doesn't properly represent the true color of the Dark Chocolate shoes.
I only learned this after asking for an exchange and the second pair were exactly the same. While the image seems to suggest a warm brown color with popping red flair, the dark brown is almost black, and the mesh is a plain grey. The popping red flair is a blah orange. My guess is the photographer used too much light. Too bad, because they were pretty comfortable for my wide feet.

Bought these shoes to wear to work in loved the fact that they were Gore-Tex to keep my feet dry in the morning that only lasted about 2 weeks then the waterproof wore off and I love these shoes but they don't last long or the pair I bought didn't 3 months in the bottom of the shoe started to peel away from the body I bought another pair and hope they last longer but for the first pair I was not satisfied.

I bought these for walking my dog in the early morning. I needed a pair of shoes that could keep my feet dry when we walk through the large field of short grass covered in morning dew. I thought with the Gore-tex these would keep my feet dry but I was way off. they worked for about 1-2 months and then slowly water seeped through and my feet would get more wet with every walk. Maybe it was a bad shoe? but I won't be buying another pair to find out. I'll be looking for something else.

Am an avid hiker who loved this shoe initially, but was disappointed by the lack of durability over a short period of time. After a summer on the trails, the front part of the shoe disintegrated. This is the only pair of Merrell hiking shoes that have not held up for at least a couple years of peak bagging. Would recommend another style of this brand and hope that Merrell won't let me down.
