I have narrow heels and it's not unusual for shoes to slip on my heels. These were no exception. I had to return them, unfortunately, because they slipped so badly.

This is a great looking hiking shoe, and it felt wonderful on my foot except for being too wide in the heel. Happily, thanks to Zappos returns policy I was able to return these and try another hiking shoe -- the Merrell Moab Waterproof -- and I am delighted with the Merrell's!

This is my second pair. I truly love these shoes. I ordered them recently to go on a trip to the country of Jordan. They were perfect. Great for walking/hiking.Now that I have the new pair I can turn my other pair into the comfortable pair of shoes I needed to mow the lawn in!

These shoes didn't fit right out of the box like other Keens have for me. As other reviewers have commented, the heel slipped quite a lot at first. I don't think it's the result of a wide heel though, I think it's more because the shoe was stiff - like a hiking boot instead of a tennis shoe. The toe box is pretty wide, so my problem was more about the fact that my foot slid forward in the shoe, there wasn't a lot of movement in the shoe to accommodate the action of my foot as I moved. Once I re-laced them and made sure to crank down on the toe and tie lace stops into the lacing (Google "Hiking Boot Lacing Tips") I haven't had a problem. My feet stay in place, and my heels don't slip. I feel like stability of the sole and boot leather is a good indicator of the quality - these boots seem very sturdy so I hope they're worth the trouble of breaking them in!

I knew that the Keen brand usually runs small and bought a size bigger. Everyone has different feet and I have narrow feet. I found the length to fit perfect but still have a problem with the heel slipping as I was hiking the Grand Canyon. I also had a hard time cinching up the laces to get a tight fit without cutting off my circulation. Narrow feet with plenty of toe room still had the heel slip on one foot. If I had purchased these at the store, I probably would have been able to seek a different style of Keen brand. After wearing them down the Grand Canyon I am now stuck with an expensive pair of Keens that I will use again but will always regret that I did not have time to return them before hiking the Grand Canyon.

I have owned these for almost a year now and wrote a review in August 2011. It turned out to be the top positive review (to my surprise!). Glad I could help. They are now officially Adirondack Mountain tested. As I mentioned in my original review, I like everything about the Targhee II except for the lacing system and the heel cup that was too wide for me. They have broken in so the wide heel issue is a little better because the shoe is bending with the flexing movement of my foot better; however, I need to stop frequently to adjust the laces...too loose and the heel slips, too tight and the pressure is too much on my instep. A real annoyance. Switching my orthotics has not helped. But, on the positive side, I love how my toes feel and the look of the shoe. I had initial concerns about durability concerning the lacing, but they are holding up fine especially considering that I probably give them more tugging than they would usually receive. So, as I said a year ago, if you have an issue with narrow heels, try a different shoe. I am now shopping again for a pair with a better fit for hiking and will use these as a good pair of water resistant winter shoes for general purposes. We get plenty of snowy, mucky weather here in the wonderful ADKs and I'll get lots more wear out of these Targhee IIs.

These are the best fitting hiking shoes I ever had. All other brands are too narrow in the toe box causing me pain and blisters. Keen in general seems to agree with my wide feet better than other brands. Targhee II are a bit on a heavier side, but I like that - they are sturdy, supportive stable and give good protection to my feet. There are only 2 things I would like improved in this shoe: 1) Lining - I wore it down surprisingly quick. After just one season of hiking the lining at the heel developed holes, and that gave me blisters. I wish Keen used leather or other more durable material to line the shoe in this spot. 2) I had trouble lacing the shoes properly. The laces tended to dig into my foot at the one point where there is no leather under the lace, where the lace go through a loop at the second crossing from the top. I wish Keen used continues strip of leather to go under the lacing. While I am taking 1 star off the overall rating because of those 2 issues, they will not prevent me from getting another pair of Targhee II - as a matter of fact I just placed an order.

This is a super comfortable shoe, but make sure you get the right size. I am an 8 1/2 in most everything and I ordered a 9 because I read it was small. Well, I should have ordered the 8 1/2. I have blisters now!

I really like the shoes they have great traction and keep my feet dry and warm in the wet cold weather in England. My only complaint is that I ordered a 7 which felt good but would slip off my heal when I walked so I sent them back and got a 6.5 which is really tight and not as comfortable. They seem to be stretching out a little and I think after wearing a few more times they should be more comfortable. They just seem to fit differently than the other similar styles of Keen.

At first my right heel pumped up in the shoe and I thought I was going to have to return them, but after a few times wearing them it seemed to feel more comfortable. I love the styling as in most Keen's I have worn they are durable and supportive all day. Eager to see how water proof they truly are for Michigan winter walking. So far I have been happy with these! Oh and the Targhee ll do seem to run true to size.

I really wanted to love this shoe. It looks nice and felt great, all except for the tongue. It wouldn't lay flat when I laced them up and I wasn't going to chance having a sore foot on a long hike, so back they went. I feel that this shoe is true to size. I took the advice and ordered 1/2 size larger, but didn't need it. Kudos to Zappos for fast shipping, easy return process and account crediting. It's great!

These shoes were ALMOST perfect! They were so incredibly comfortable--in both a cushiony AND supportive way. I usually order a 7 or 7.5, and even the 8.5 was too short, as my toe hit the end. I'm so sad to have to return them, as they were perfect in every other way!

Liked em, but couldn't keep em -
I love Keen's. I needed a pair of walking shoes and tried these (and Keen Voyager) out. I have a narrow heel. Although these fit in every other way and I like the look, the heel slipped a lot and I didn't think I would be able to walk far without discomfort. So I'm returning them. Still love Keen's and will try again. My sandals fit perfectly although I always order a half size larger with Keen's.

Love!
I just received my new Targhee II's in the mail today. I love them! They are very comfortable and rugged; I can tell that they'll be a great help to me walking to and from the bus stop up here in the Northeast (we just got another snow-storm, I can't wait to give these a whirl). They are the first pair of Keens I've ever owned, and really the first pair of performance shoes I've owned, so I'm excited to see where they'll take me. All I know is that I'm all-around pleased. I just wish they didn't cost so much!
My one tiny issue is that the top is so wide-looking...I have wide feet, and granted, the shoes are very cute and almost cartoony (I have the purple and greys), but it certainly doesn't do anything to make your feet look any narrower. Quite the contrary. Still, I feel pretty B.A. in them. :) I would definitely recommend.
Also, I listened to the others on here who said to order a half-size up, and I'm very glad I did.

The footbed and cut of the shoe around the foot is excellent, but not where it meets the ankle. The leather is stiffer than most, and even with lightweight socks it cuts into the ankle.

Just a little snug -
I love the shoes, but if you're a half-size like me, you might want to order the next size up.

Not as happy as I had hoped -
Though these are also well made shoes, they are not as comfortable as the Wasatch Crest model which I had before. Still breaking them in in the hopes that they will do some more molding to my foot and provide the support I expected. Though all the Keens of the same size seem to fit me uniformly, these seem to be just slightly larger than the other types of Keens I have already (3 other prs).

Love em -
These shoes feel great. I prefer a "boot" feel to my athletic foot wear so these are perfect. I suffer with many foot issues but these were comfortable from the start. The only issue I have is that they seem a 1/4 - 1/2 size shorter than my usual size "bozo" 11's! They are so comfortable I opted to keep them and use lighter socks.

Very comfortable, but only a 3 hour shoe -
I love Keens, I love the comfort they provide and I am planning to walk all over Europe with them on, but these particular ones will begin to add pressure to the top of my foot after long periods so I have to loosen them a bit. They do run small as others have said- buy a half size larger than your normal shoe size. Other than that, they are made with super quality and will continue to recommend them in a heartbeat.

Light, comfortable -
I have wide feet and these shoes fit nicely right out of the box. They're light-weight and sturdy. Soles are very inflexible and heel is wide, too. Rubbed blisters on my little toe and pressed hard across the balls of my feet, even with the third wearing. Don't know if I'll be able to take them on the hiking trip thru Turkey I have planned.

Somewhat Disappointed -
I absolutely LOVE the Keen Targhee for style, comfort, looks, and grip. My disappointment comes in the fact that in less than a year, the stitching has come undone on the pair and a few of the rubber grips have lifted off the sole. I have really enjoyed wearing my Keens and maybe I've simply worn them out, I'm not sure. I have many other styles of Keen shoes and really overall love the brand.

Not my favorite Keen -
I love Keen shoes -- this one is just a wee bit squished in the toe (from the top down, not side to side) but otherwise it's as great as my other Keens.

Not for a Narrow Heel -
These shoes look to be a tough, rugged shoe with decent styling. The laces were a little shorter than many of my hiking shoes. I am normally a 9.5, but I ordered the 10. I think these run a little shorter than what I'm used to. The width was fine throughout the shoe EXCEPT FOR THE HEEL. Those with narrow heels will get slipping. I thought I might be able to put an insert in to make them stay put, but that would have meant ordering up one size, which would have made the shoe too wide for the rest of the foot.
If you have narrow heels, pass on these. I should have paid more attention to these comments before ordering, but I didn't. I thought the shoes were very comfortable until I took a step, then the slippage was very apparent. What a shame since these would have otherwise been perfect for me. This is the first pair I've had to return to Zappos.

I bought this shoe in the fall (now Feb.) and have loved it. The heel is a bit loose (but after Dansko I was used to it and didn't think about it. I did need to add orthotic supports (small ones at the shoe store) for comfort. The water proofing and the great sole made for a nice between shoe and boot choice this winter. They can get warm!

Overall comfortable, stylish, and original shoe -
I love the look of these shoes. They are very comfortable and waterproof, perfect for Chicago weather! They are also good on the ice. Only problem I had is they feel about a half size smaller than marked. Otherwise, I am completely satisfied!
