For years I've hiked in a pair of heavy, sturdy leather boots (Merrell Blast); I was looking for something lighter, but just as well constructed and high enough on the ankle to provide protection and support. These are perfect. They fit like a dream right out of the box and never required any "breaking in." They make moving feel good. So far I've only tested their waterproofing briefly, in a half-hour slog through slightly slushy snow on Mt. Rainier. They kept my feet completely dry. I do recommend buying a half-size above your street shoe size: I normally wear a 6.5, and the 7 Targhee II Mid fits me well with one medium-thick sock layer.
I'd also recommend:
Merrell, Brooks, Chaco, Teva, Dansko

I went with Keen because I have another pair of their boots that I really enjoy. Their size 9 is perfect for my foot. This boot fits really well with a good hiking sock. The only complaint I would have is their arch support isn\'t the best.

These boots are great. I ordered them for day hiking in the canyons out west. Wanted a supportive, comfortable boot that would protect my ankles. I ordered 1\/2 size larger as advised and they are perfect with a cushy pair of socks. Nice wide toe bed (which is important to me as I have Reynauds syndrome and need the circulation space). Needed to wear a few times so my ankles weren\'t sore, but they broke in quite easily and are very supportive.

This is a great hiking boot, I live in them for weeks at a time during my field season. They were comfortable from the start and broke in very quickly. I usually don't like hiking shoes that go above the ankle, but these provide great all-around support and don't make my ankles feel constricted. My feet are snug and comfortable, and the boots feel true to size. The only negative is that I'll need to add some sort of waterproofing to them and after walking through a dewy, grassy field at dawn they were pretty much soaked through. However, they dried quickly and I've worked on wet mornings since without a problem. Overall a great shoe, and I anticipate getting another pair of these when I wear them out in a year or two.

I just wrote a review for my son's pair of size 8.5 same shoe. We loved the comfort and waterproofing. I think my feet look kind of bulky in these shoes, but it was worth it for the many hours we spent in them. A little bulky too for climbing (not technical climbing of course).

No break in time needed. Waterproof and comfortable according to my son who wore these due to inabilty to find the right shoe for him in boys. We did a 28 day trip out west with a lot of rock scrambling, hiking and a bit of climbing.

Very comfortable hiking shoe! Hardly needed to break it in. Good ankle support. Shoe laces remained tied.

These shoes are like butter! I ordered them a half size up as recommended. The first time I wore them, I walked about 4 miles and no issues at all. Then I used them the next weekend to walk 12.4 miles, no problem. I am not a shoe person, but when I see these lined up with my other shoes, I just smile. Maybe it's the color combination (laurel oak/peppercorn). I haven't checked out the waterproof yet, but will soon. Couldn't be happier with the shoes or with Zappos service.

I just walked 10 miles in these shoes yesterday and my feet don't hurt a bit. I love them. I barely even notice I'm wearing hiking boots, even though they look HUGE on my skinny legs. :P Also, they're a really pretty color (monument/iguana)!

Love this shoe! Comfortable from day one. Sturdy, waterproof, lightweight, easy to take on and off, super easy to lace up. Super cute, too. Keens run fairly wide, which is why I like them.

These are the most comfortable, supportive hiking boots that have ever been on my feet! I have a wide foot and and it was suggested to go up a half size - I was hesitant because I wear a 9 - you know, the giant foot look. They look great, feel great and I wore them for 9 hours hiking 3 days in a row without any aches! Love, love, love them!!!!

I have very difficult to fit feet; still testing these boots at home, but they feel very good. They are light weight, heaviness being a negative with many boots. Although my feet are somewhat wide, they seem roomy enough. Order at least a 1/2 size larger than regular shoes, possibly a full size if your feet are wide. They do seem to run small. It seems like these are going to be keepers.

I bought these hikers partly based on some reviews here and elsewhere that were pretty positive and am in the process of breaking them in. They've seen snow and ice and some mud, then lots of rain and stream stomping and not a single bit of moisture got inside, even after an entire weekend of downpours. Toe box is wide, much nicer than most women's boots/shoes, but I still have one toe on my right foot that rubs. This isn't the only shoe/boot that affects me this way. I like them, and they will be going to Spain with me in May for the Picos de Europa!

So comfortable right out of the box! Light weight, yet good support and traction - love the extra toe cover for easy cleaning and extra protection. Like that the tongue is not a separate piece so it will not shift as you wear the boot - plus better water protection if you step into puddle. I put these on even for going to the store as they are so fun to wear and look really cute in a clunky, sporty way - nice color combo! THX

I tried these on at a local store to get the correct fit but I wasn't wild about the color they had in stock so I ordered these from Zappos where the color selection is much better. I normally wear a 6 in regular shoes, but order a 6.5 in hiking and tennis shoes because of foot swelling and they fit perfectly. They are super comfy even though I haven't worn high tops in quite some time. I plan on wearing these on a 3 week trip to Australia, New Zealand later this year. They don't need any break in period and look fabulous. Zappos is great. I ordered these on a Tuesday night and they were delivered on Wednesday.

I loved these boots, but for me they do not need to be 1/2 a size bigger. Zappos efficiently exchanged it for a 7.5 size. I am super happy; the shoes are not only cute, but very comfortable. The hike became much easier.

Another great pair of Keens! These were a bit stiffer at first (but not uncomfortable) than other Keens I’ve had, but they broke in quickly. Nice ankle support and great for trail walking/light hiking - shoe provides really good stability. Unlike other reviewers, I do not find them to be too hot. I haven’t worn them in the summer yet, but winters here are mild and so far so good.

My first pair of Keens and I love them. I have a wide, square foot and this footbed is a great fit for me. Boots were comfortable immediately and did not ever chafe at the ankles as so many hiking boots I have tried do. They have the rather odd sensation of being both incredibly supportive and as light as a running shoe. Don’t know how Keen did that, but it feels great! I also find the little lace cleat at the top of the shoe to be very useful for getting shoes on and off quickly. Wore the shoes hiking in rain forests in Central America and they functioned very well.

I am very happy with my new boots. I did have a problem with the first pair sent. My left inside heel hit just wrong. Zappos sent me another pair in the same size that were much better. Then I replaced the insole with inserts I have and everything is great. I have wide feet (with narrow ankles) and the wide toe box is wonderful. I also like the shoelace locks and the way the laces pull around the ankle instead of the foot. The pinkish brown color is great. I always order my boots a size larger because of thick socks. My foot measures 7.5 and I ordered 8.5.

I’ve only had my new Keen boots for a few weeks, but so far I can say that they are great looking and very comfortable... the first time I wore them, it was like putting on slippers! Of course, after a few hours of hiking, I did have some Sorenes in the back of my lower calves, but I suspect that breaking them in a bit will help with that! I got them a half-size bigger than my usual size since I wear thicker socks with them - glad I did that because they fit comfortably with my hiking socks where they might have otherwise felt too snug. I am a longtime fan of Keens and, with these boots, they’ve won me over yet again!

I love these shoes! I’ve been wearing the Keen Voyageur Mids for years, but the soles wear out quickly, so I upgraded to these - and I love them. They are just as comfortable right out of the box as the Voyageur Mid, but are also waterproof, and they seem a bit more sturdy.

These shoes are great! They look good, they feel good and I’ve ordered 2 of the same pair since my initial order. I figure if you find shoes you like, you may as well stock up because next time you need new shoes they may not make that style anymore. I should be set for the next few years! These felt fine right out of the box, and I, too, ordered a half-size larger than I’d normally wear. I’ve worn them almost every day since they arrived and have jumped through puddles and saturated grass... no leaks or damp socks! Fabulous! Keens rock!

Keens are the best thing that ever happened to my feet, and this shoe is the most comfortable of the Keen’s shoes and sandals I’ve worn. I agree with the reviewer who said the style makes feet look smaller. I love the gray/iguana color combination--looks great and goes with everything. The shoes are easy to lace up, and I especially appreciate the prongs at the top that hold the laces in place while you tie them. As always, Zappos’ service is amazing. I ordered these one evening after dinner, was notified that they’d shipped before I went to bed, and found them at my door the very next afternoon. Wow!

I had been wearing these shoes for over 2 years. I really like this type of shoe. Good for walking on snow, and I wear it to work on my feet for 12 hours. It surely keeps your feet warm and water proof, very sturdy. I would recommend it to anyone. I like Keen products, they are quality.

This shoe rocks! Superb quality. Very comfortable right out of the box. Had to get used to padding around ankles - a little hurtful there for a short while. Like the clips at the top which keep laces from coming untied. Ordered up half a size after reading the other reviews. So glad I did - comfortable, no break-in period, great quality. What more could you want? Yes, well, maybe the price could be lower... but worth it.
