Give it a try -
I have worn a pair of white mountain sandals in this style to bits and couldn't find a replacement anywhere. I wear a 36 in the Birkenstocks but the mephisto sizing and other reviews said the mephisto runs a bit large and stretches so I got the 35.(i also didn't want to pay $100 for the shoes and the sale price was only in 35) I got these in the mail, tried them on at the PO counter and thought OH TOO tight. I then adjusted the instep buckle and walked around the carpet. they felt snug and had more instep/arch support than I get from the birkis. they felt different, but nice. Tried them the next day indoors and then said, ok they'll do. The suede is slowly giving more and the sandal is very well-made.

Thanks to the Zappo terrific customer service I was able to buy a pair of Mephisto sandals. It took a lot of effort however, as I had to send back 3 pairs and am keeping the 4th. I know my size but all the different colors (red waxy leather, red patent leather, camel waxy leather and light beige nubuck fit differently in the same size. They were either made in France or in Portugal so that might account for the irregularity. I am keeping the best of the bunch but still find the piece between the toes on one foot digs in. I love the look though, and am glad I was able to return the others easily.

Funky and comfy -
Helen is a great shoe. I am a long time Birk fan and find that the Mephistos are more supportive--and I was psyched to finf them in fashion forward colors. I got the silver and they are hot--people are stopping me on the street and asking me where I got them.
I originally tried on the pink and I have to admit that the pink was more comfortable. The leather on the silver is very hard, I think because it's the way it was dyed, and they take a bit to break in.
I love them and recommed them to anyone.

I was looking for a comfortable walking shoe that wasn't ugly and clunky looking. This shoe fit the bill. I have a slightly wider foot (usually wear a D) and a high arch. The shoe has good arch support but is a wee bit narrow so my wide foot is a little snug. But otherwise it's great. And I think it's very cute.

I had to return this item because it is far too stiff between the toes and was digging in. I really loved the look, but could not deal with the stiffness of the straps.

Mephisto Helens were my go-to sandals for years. Took a couple yrs' break from them & was ready for new ones – but these are a lot less comfortable than I remember. On one of the feet, the leather over the arch & the toe loop have rubbed the skin raw. Seems the leather is less soft or pliable than before, or the cut is off. Never had this trouble before with them – even tho I usually don't like thongs between my toes, the old Helens were always the exception, so I expected the same now. Disappointing! I hope they will soften with more wear but meanwhile I'm needing bandaids on my feet to protect them.

Would have been the perfect sandal. Excellent fit, very comfortable footbed (softer than my Birks) but the piece between the big and next toe was so stiff and rough it would have caused blisters and bleeding in no time flat. For this price point I don't expect to have to spend weeks or months breaking in the leather!

This sandal, while pretty and seems; would be comfortable - had a very small toe opening. Length and width of whole shoe was fine; it was just the toe opening that was small. I would have kept except I don't want to rub a blister into my foot while breaking the leather in. Oh well. Returning.
