Like other Altras that I own, the tongue of this shoe is rather long. But unlike the others, this tongue is stiff and inflexible. It digs into my ankle and is so uncomfortable that I am returning the shoes. It's so sad, because otherwise this shoe is perfect for my low volume sensitive toe foot.

Great shoe with one fatal flaw. The tongue is so stiff that it digs into my ankle. Why in the world would they use such a thick inflexible plastic overlay for the logo on the tongue? Otherwise this shoe is perfect for my low volume sensitive toe foot. So sad.

Usually, when I'm trying to decide on a pair of ultras, it's between a half size up and my normal size. With these I experienced tightness across the toes that resulted in small blisters, I tried running and walking on trail.

I love Timps. I have had many pairs over the years. What I love about these is the new sole. It's grippy and doesn't wear out so fast. I also like the new tongue. But the uppers are SO uncomfortable. I still have scabs weeks later from them rubbing wrong. The uppers are very stiff. One hot spot is on my ankle and the others are my toes where the protective front meets the mesh. If the new soles and tongue were paired with the Timp 4 uppers, these would be perfect. But I've had to try other brands because these never have broken in, even after 50 miles of hiking.

I don't know if it's just the pair I purchased, but there is a hard knot where the seam meets on the inside of the tongue of the Timp 5s. It rubs into your foot. My foot was turning red in that spot just walking around the house. The tongue on the tip is nice and smooth in the Timp 4s. While the vibram bottom is an awesome upgrade, the tongue needs to be worked out. Unfortunately, I will have to return and find a different shoe altogether.

I bought these because I already have other Altra shoes that I love, but this one needs a width adjustment, the toes feel comfortable but the base of the toes get squeezed. Shoe fits too narrow.

Have 60 light miles on these shoes & the heel wore. Contacted warranty & said it was my fault - improper size, wrong lacing, etc. Even though I got them fitted at a RR. Heel tab = pressure point.

I had bought this pair of sneakers from REI over a year ago. Wore it for the first timeon a trip to Portugal in October this year.
I noticed wear and tear starting on the pink material after wearing them for day. It didn't take more than a week for the material to start wearing off. What these pictures show are the wear and tear after 4 weeks. It is pretty disappointing. I am expecting better quality and thatthis would not happen so soon.
Unfortunately Altra customer service decided it is outside the warranty period and offered nothing, no discounts/store credit. So I will explore other options when the time comes for a replacement.

I've had several pairs of Timp's over the years and they've been great but this new version is way too narrow! The toe box while "foot shaped", is very narrow and hurts my foot. Not a good improvement

Fits smaller and narrower than the torin. I miss the wide toe box.

This shoe is a little tight between the toe and the bridge. Everything else is good.

10 year exclusive Altra wearer here. I had the timp 4. Perfection. Timp 5 not so good. Only wearing the Timp 5 one month. already hole on the inside of heel at top, and hole at the top of laces. Timp 4 had different heel at top. it never wore out and i wore the soles off those shoes over about 5/6 months. The loop at top of Timp 4, very helpful. The loop on the heel of Timp 5 is worthless. I have skinny fingers and cannot even get finger in at the angle you do this at. It is very frustrating getting holes at the top of heel inside. It is very frustrating having a worthless heel loop. This has happened on many of my Altra shoes. They fixed it with Timp 4 and Mont Blanc. Why did they go back??? not good!

I wish I could love this product. The Timp 5 offers great traction going up/down steep granite slabs, it offers the perfect amount of cushioning on various terrains (talus fields, gravel road, packed dirt, etc), and it looks great. But my biggest complaint is the outsole. If you look at the outsole, you will see there is a combination of soft foam and Vibram rubber. After four trail runs, totalling 125km, the lugs of the rubber were peeling off where it meets the foam - bad design! If the outsole was all rubber, like the Lone Peak, then it wouldn't have that issue.
Another complaint is the fit. The stitching that holds the tongue sits right ON TOP of my first metatarsophalangeal joint. (I do have a rather large first metatarsophalangeal joint on both feet because I used to wear tight rock climbing shoes.) So the stitching digs in and at the end of each run my first metatarsophalangeal joints would be red and swollen. I do not have that issue at all with the many Lone Peak shoes I have gone through. I love how the stitching for the tongue in the Lone Peak sits lower, just below where my first metatarsophalangeal joints are so it doesn't dig in.
Altra, I hope you improve the Timp because it can be such a great pair of trail runners.

I wanted to love these shoes. I have the Timp 4s and aside from the annoying tongue, they were just the right amount of cushion for feet that had been beat up by rocky trails. I was excited that the Timp 5s had a different tongue but the toe box and upper are definitely worse on this model. The upper is quite stiff and the toe box is much more narrow. By mile 7 of trail run, my pinky toes were red and sore from how much they were rubbing. It would be great if there were more styles that came in wide, but it seems like Altra is getting away from that. I may just have to make the switch to Topo.

I loved the Timps - until I didn't. Incredible fit and comfort but a 2-inch long hole formed in the side of the mesh fabric. Turns out this is so common my local running store stopped carrying them.

Timps were weird not typical Altra feel. They felt to long and narrower than typical, several hot spots on top of foot and footbed. I was told they are more of a road shoe that you can run trails in, which is what I was kinda looking for, a hybrid so to speak. The sizing and feel was just really weird. Probably didn't help that one of the shoes had obviously been tried on, and left with the laces really tight which left the shoe a bit misformed right out of the box. Tried to size down but those were definitely too small. Got a pair of the Olympus, been pretty happy with those.

Lacing area for me on the right foot was too tight at the top. So you cannot just loosen the laces the whole contruction is constricted. What happen to Altra where I had all this freedom to roam years ago and now seems to me and my feet we are being contricted. Ugh!

Very narrow and uncomfortable. Creates foot and knee pain that I've never experienced with my other Altras. Just hiked 15 miles in my Lone Peaks and can't walk a block on these. I Do not recommend this style.

Nice looking shoe and well cushioned, but will return. Size 10 was too small, 10.5 too big. Toe box is shallow. The rocker sole provides cushioning for the ball of foot, but caused pressure on knees.

I had high hopes for the new version of Timp.I communicated with customer service before my purchase because my last Timps practically disintegrated as I walked. After hearing about the improvements I decided to go for it. I purchased March 6. I'm traveling outside the US at the moment and had a friend bring them to me. Not even a hundred miles or 2 months and the foam has collapsed! This has put me in a really bad situation as I'm headed to do the Camino de Santiago. Many miles ahead and the shoes are folding in on itself. Left AND right shoe! And I don't have a way to get different shoes at the moment. This is causing very weird rubbing and blisters on the side of my foot and big toe. Also causing pain in my knees. Right when I first put them on, they were very tight and painful..it's like the material is tighter around the foot. I know timps are more narrow that the standard fit, but that's not exactly the issue.. like there should be more material to create more space between top and bottom of foot and toe area, it's weird. I thought maybe they just needed breaking in, but nope, it didn't get better. I have had several pairs and different models (lone peaks, timps, torin- lone peaks and torin don't seem to have the same quality issues) I love the fit and feel but can't keep spending this type of money on shoes that are defective this quick!! I wish I would have followed the other reviews advice and not gone with these. Wasted money and worried about injury:( I was walking with friends and they even took video of me from behind while I was walking because they were shocked how bad it was (this was before I knew or had noticed it).

First of all I swear by altra's because of the wide toe box and ease of wearing the shoe. These however have a tighter toe box (not sure why), the cushioning feels off? Not sure if anyone else experienced this but it feels like my feet are sliding inwards when I run or walk. Also the back loop is way too small to even fit my finger into to pull them on, which is strange.

So bummed I didn't return these. Had high hopes they would break in, but after a few hundred miles they are still stiff, give me foot pain, and have hot spots - running more than 10 miles in these is painful. I ran in my old timp 4's today while I wait for a different brand of shoes to be delivered, and although there is not much traction left, my feet were so happy. Bring back the old version please.

Would love to see every shoe come in a wide. It used to be the regular standard in altras, nowhere near where they once were. I need more cushion than my beloved lone peaks.

These shoes look cute, but they're really stiff, narrower than usual, and have too much sole. They're so stiff that they're hard to put on and take off. My feet feel trapped and sweaty, and the flexible yet padded have been replaced with stiff regular soles you could get from Nike, Brooks, Solomon, etc. I run about 1,000 miles a year, mostly on trails, and adored the Timp 2 and especially the Timp 3. These shoes are nothing like the Timps of the past, and I think it may be time switch brands. They're the first pair of Altras to give me blisters. The Superiors have also lost a lot of comfort and quality, so don't waste your time buying those either.

On my 3rd or 4th pair of Temps and the 5s are absolute worst. (Sorry Altra). Past versions of temps have never given me blisters but these did. They're stiff and feel cheaply made despite the price tag. I won't buy them again and am hesitant to stay with Altra. Pretty disappointed to say the least.
