I liked the sole on this - a good medium thickness with good support. Not too soft, not too hard. But the laces are NOT stretchy which is disappointing. And the material at the forefoot folds inward and pnches my feet when I walk.

I bought these a year ago. They are very comfortable for walking/hiking. I bought 1/2 size up and they fit well. My issue is that the glued seams are coming undone.

I have another pair of Altra (Escalante 3) of the same size that are very soft, wide and comfortable. Compared to them, Timp 5 are extremely tight on the front. The textile doesn`t stretch. They are definitely not a good fit for the wide feet.
The visual design is great though.

I appreciate the upgrade to a Vibram sole and the issue with the tongue has been fixed, but as others noted, they feel narrower in the toe box. This may be because the lacing doesn't extend down as far as previous versions (see photo for comparison). Also agree with other commenters that the color ways could use improving. Blah or pinkyuck.

I did a 9 mile mountain hike to break these in. The grip is excellent - lots of rock scrambles at the mountain top and I did not slip. And they did dry pretty fast once wet. They are a bit stiff. The older version I bought ~4 years ago was more mesh upper, while these uppers feel more hard plasticy. That's my only complaint so far.

Had to put my Timp4s to rest and purchased Timp5s, which now have about 100 miles of running and hiking on them. Appreciate the upgrade to vibram sole on the 5; however, the upper feels stiffer than the 4 so there was a longer break in time. Also, Altra seems to be narrowing the toeboxes. KEEP OUR TOEBOXES WIDE, that is why we love you (despite your horrible colorways), Altra! Altra is the reason I sacrificed aesthetics for comfort, and my feet have never looked back. I am an Altra fan for life and don't even try on other brands, my feet crave the wide toe box.
That being said, I would appreciate an all black shoe- black with hints of blue and teal don't count. Altra finally made an all black lonepeak for men, would appreciate the same. Less is more with the colors.

I've tried the Superiors, Timps, and Olympus and the Timps are my favorite by far - just enough cushioning to feel supported, but not so much that I lose foot feel or feel like I'm running in platforms. Tongue is much improved from Timp 4 (that one was stiff and cut into the ankle until it softened up a bit) - it's cushioned and much softer. Otherwise, the toe box feels more rigid and less comfortable than the Timp 4's. It sounds like a small thing, but I really miss the pull tab on the back of Timp 4's - big enough to loop a finger into easily to slip the shoe on and off while standing. Not a huge deal, but the pull tab on the 5's is small (though still big enough to put a carabiner through, thankfully).

I love that this shoe was upgraded to a vibram sole, my last pair wore down in 100 miles on the PCT, due to the Timp 4's lack of lug depth. I also think I prefer the fit of the Timp 4, these feel a bit narrow in the toe box compared to the 4s.
And the tongue kind of digs in weird on the arch of my foot where the shoe laces press it down? Hmmmmm. No shoe is perfect!
Overall, I enjoy the shoe and like that they are sturdier/grippier for trail running than the previous model. And I am hopeful the tongue will break in more.
Oh and the colors are fun!!!!

I got Timps looking for a trail shoe with more cushion than my beloved Lone Peaks but still with their toe room and grippy soles. At first I was worried since the toe box is definitely more narrow. But a couple trail runs and my feet felt happy and had enough room. Also love that they have a gaiter loop. I put in 50+ miles a week on trails in them and no issues. But the Bloodroot Ultra was the test and they passed!

I've been purchasing Altras for about 10 years and what I love most about them is knowing they will be comfortable on day one. Unfortunately, these do not follow suit. The uppers are so tight on the top of my feet the really hurt. I'm hoping shoe stretchers will help.

The lighter shoe, tongue change (finally), and color is amazing! However, this model is small and more narrow than previous models. I had to up half a size (I'm usually an 8.5) for a 9 and the toe box still feels too narrow. After breaking the shoes in for a couple weeks, I wore them on a 22 mile run and ended up with a blister. I've never had rubbing with Altras before , so I'm really sad about this. This is almost a perfect show.

I am a long time devotee of the Timp 2. They are my go to shoe for 50k and 50 mile distance and I still have a pair in my rotation that I got on the second hand market. That said, I was not a huge fan of the Timp 3 and the Timp 4. I am also not a fan of the old Maxtrac outsole. It wore down pretty fast (my kiddo had a pair of Lone Peak kids that also wore down really fast). I was super excited to see a Vibram outsole on the Timp 5, hopefully it proves more durable. I wore these out of the box on a 20 mile run on the Ice Age Trail. They feel like a lot of shoe! Like a tank, even in comparison with my pair of Timp 2. They are certainly stiffer? than the Timp 2. I just wore them for another run yesterday (~6 miles) and they still feel stiff and like a lot of shoe, but they are really protective but maybe run a little hot. I'm interested to see if the flexibility improves a bit with more break in. I like them, but I'm not sure if I love them. That said, I'm hoping to wear to wear them for at least part of a 100k this year. For point of reference, I'm average build and run ultras recreationally. I also am a long time planter fasciitis sufferer but these do not seem to aggravate it.

I like these shoes. As a runner, they are the closest shoes that give that no-shoe feel and foot strike. Positively, they provide just enough comfort and grip to feel stable but also give that no-shoe feel. The cons: I'm not too fond of small-toe boxes; they feel very tight, about a half size too snug. And I'm a TTS women's size 8. I wish they had more color arrays, and overall, the feel is excellent. I prefer these for my trail runs, but overall, they're great for all running. They helped ease my stability when running on rougher terrain trails.

I received these shoes at no cost in exchange for a honest review. I like these shoes but there are a couple of things that I would change. They seem to run about a half size too small but there is plenty of toe room otherwise. The tops look a little wide but they serve their purpose. They are a little squeaky when you are indoors but I think it will dissipate with more use. They have plenty of cushioning for hiking and walking and provide plenty of support. The colors are cute and I will continue to wear these on my hikes.

I like the shoe overall. I ordered my normal size and they are really snug with regular socks. I recommend going up a size. Outer material seems sturdy and bottom grips would be great for hiking and the shoe is light weight. I was looking forward to wearing these up Stone Mountain, I would definitely buy in a bigger size

I've never tried this brand before but thanks to Altra I received the Timp 5 for free in exchange of my honest opinion. This shoe does seem to run half a size too small in my opinion, I do have wide feet and they were snug on the widest part of my foot and a bit painful there. Otherwise my toes had a nice amount of room and weren't cramped and the shoe itself has a lot of cushion and it felt like I was walking on pillows the whole time I wore them. After trying them and realizing that I could probably benefit from a slightly bigger size I passed these down to my daughter and they fit her perfectly. I plan on going to try other sizes and buy myself a pair.

At this time of year I've found it can be easy for my regular running shoes to slip on the leaves on our running trails. Wearing the Altra Timp 5 was a completely different experience. They had great grip and I felt much more comfortable and confident running the trails! They're also super comfy and have excellent support. These are now my go-to running shoes!

Walked my first Camino in Timp2s with zero blisters and no foot pain. These 5s took a long time to break in and would randomly cause a blister on top of my 4th toe at the base from the tongue rubbing- finally solved it with duct tape to over that part of the inside of the shoe. Decided to go with them anyway for my 2nd Camino and the only god thing I can say is the new vibram sole held up well. Had to spend way too much time & thought adjusting during the day to avoid pain.

Super disappointed, I have never had an Altra not fit in the toe box in the 5 years I've been wearing their shoes. Sadly returning these and hoping that Altra will return back to their wide toe box soon.

I have worn Altras exclusively for 10 years. I've been wearing these shoes for about a month now. Still trying to find a way to tie them comfortably. Feels disappointing after loving these shoes for so long. Not exactly sure what has changed but my feet prefer previous models.

The shoe feels more snug than is typical of this brand, but that isn't what bothers me. They rub up against my ankle bone and that is painful on trail runs. Too bad bc they are great, otherwise.

I have a worn out my pair of Timp 2's that I loved!! Both myself and my husband have been big fans of Altra up until recently. He loved his Timp 1.5 and his current Timp 5's, and I loved my Timp 2's and Long Peak's but I need more cushion now as I am 49 and apparently your feet lose fat as you age, or at least women's do. I tried the Timp 5's, but they are two narrow, I don't know what Altra have done or why, but they are tight across the top of the foot and rub my toes. I tried my usual 9.5 and even tried the 10, but it was too big. I'm so bummed, I tried everything over the last few weeks that Altra has in a trail runner desperately trying to replace my Timp 2's, but nothing fit like the Altra's of 5 years ago. The quality in materials has also declined and they feel cheap. Hopefully Altra will listen to all the feedback from other women who have found the Timp 5 to narrow and go back to Altra's roots to design the next iteration. Until then, I'm going to have to try another brand. The Topo's have more room in the toe box than the Altra's!
