I have been purchasing these smart wool socks for many years. There is no question the quality of the socks I received has gone down in quality. The socks are no where as thick as the old socks. I still have my old smart wool socks so I could compare. Not to mention these socks are not cheap. But I don't mind paying for good quality. I won't be buying these socks any time in the future. Which is sad because I love the old smart wool socks I have.

they are "OK" but lack the value of their old sock hats

I wanted to love these socks as it appears so many others do, but unfortunately after my second wear they ripped at the toe seam. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to replace them. I'm bummed they didn't work out for me

There are two inherent design flaws with this sock. The first is a very tenuous and thin connection exactly where the collar at the top of the sock is joined to the body. While pulling this sock on without applying any unusual force, my finger actually popped through the sock at this juncture leaving a hole in the sock. The second flaw consists of a decided tendency for exterior pilling. At any area where there is any friction between the boot and sock while being worn, very noticeable pilling appears. This occurred after only three or four wash/wear cycles. I have other L.L. Bean socks (e.g., mid-weight hiking socks) that do NOT exhibit these flaws. Considering the price of these socks, their performance is disappointing.

The socks seem to be true to size but the heavy cushioning on the soles meant the shoes I usually wear with these socks now fit too tightly. I ordered two pair and am using just one. If the problem with the heavy cushioning does not resolve with additional wear I will return both pairs for a refund.

Unisex socks don't fit well. I have thin feet and these were way too loose, moved around in boots. Also pill badly. Please bring back woman's boot socks, have some that have lasted many years. I will continue to mend them, they fit perfectly and we're comfortable and durable.

I have 8 other pairs of these LL Bean socks, in varying colors. They all work fine, though definitely shrink with washings. This particular color, however, feels much coarser than the other colors and shrunk much more than the others.

Fancy looking but not much of a boot sock- more of a heavy crew sock weight. I've had substantial boots socks from Bean before. This sock is not like that.

Been buying these socks for many years. My husband purchased two pairs last week and the quality is not the same as his older pairs. The socks are thinner, less cushioning, less wool, definitely not the same sock. He will not be reordering these. If they do not hold up in the laundry, they will be returned. Bring back the old version LL Bean!

I write this review with a great deal of reluctance since I have always been totally satisfied with L.L.Bean quality and service.
I have a pair of Bean Boots with Boot Socks. Boots & socks are fine except socks are very tight but OK for occasional use. Socks ordered & received were labeled size "large" - recommended for my shoe size 9-9.5.
My feet tend to be cold in bed and I like to wear socks. It occurred to me that the boot socks in "extra large" size would be perfect. I ordered such a pair and received a pair marked "extra large". When I compared to the other pair - both pairs were exactly the same size and would be too tight. So called to get a return and was told that if I marked the reason for return as "defective" I would receive a full refund without a return charge. The refund in fact deducted return shipping.
I am not so much concerned about the return shipping charge for defective mdse but I am concerned that the sizing of the socks was incorrect.

Christmas gift for husband. The socks are great; thick, cuishiony, and warm. He works on his feet on concrete floor that gets really cold in winter. My reason for only 2stars is that first time through the laundry they came out with a hole in one of them...just along the arch area toward the heel gusset. He was so disappointed. I did a mend job so he could continue wearing, but at this price for a pair of socks I would expect better!

I purchased these socks along with Bean Boots! Followed the sizing chart for both. Love the boots but these were too small. I was hesitate to pay that much for socks and now, I really wish I had not because they are unwearable. Wish I had sized up!
They seem as though they would be warm however.

Bought these very expensive socks because of the positive reviews that they would not ride down when I wear my bean boots. Unfortunately for me that was not the case. After about 30 seconds of wear they started to ride down and bunch up. Too bad.
I actually like the material - it is substantial and still comfortable.

I ordered these socks for myself. I wear a woman's size 7.5 shoe, more or less, and ordered L.L. Bean sock size medium, as usual. These socks are too big, so I will hand them over to my husband. They are also way too thick for me; they wouldn't begin to fit in my shoes. I usually like L.L. Bean wool socks, so I will try another style next time.

I consider this sock not any better than any smart wool sock that you can buy for half the the price. I would not recommend that you wade fish with these.

If you live in a winter tundra, these socks are for you! They are very thick. Be sure to have plenty of room in your boots to fit them. They were too much for me and had to return them.

I purchased a pair of these socks for my son, who by the way is very slender, even his feet are. The mediums were too tight all over,so for another hefty price, we purchased the large. Same problem, overall too tight. He ended up keeping both pairs since he really needed them, but the biggest complaint is that after many wears, the socks remain far too tight, almost cutting off circulation. The warmth is great, but they leave HUGE indents in his skin. For the price, I would have hoped the socks were a better fit. This site was the only site that we found the item we needed and that we felt we could trust their merchandise.

I purchased these socks to keep my feet warm at high school football games. These are thick socks and your footwear need to be roomy to allow for this. I wear a size 9-9 1/2 shoe and ordered the medium and they fit perfect. My feet in these socks and inside my ugg fur lined boots were frozen after only 45 minutes in 40 degree weather. These keep feet warm inside and are very soft but for outdoor cold, I was extremely disappointed!

These socks are well made, but are a bit over-priced, and due to the sizing options, are not a good buy for someone with size 12 feet. The sizes are S, M, L, XL. L is intended for sizes 9-12, and XL for sizes 13-15, so I ordered size L. They stretched out to their maximum size and just barely fit on my foot, but stretching them also made them quite thin, so they likely won't insulate as well as they should. I suspect stepping up to size XL would have been too large and baggy. After cutting them apart and trying them on my bare feet, I didn't feel right about returning/exchanging them, so I kept them, but I wish I hadn't spent $20 on boot socks that don't fit well. If your feet happen to be in the middle of one of the size ranges, you might like these.

This sock is not what I was expecting. I ordered medium, according to size chart since I wear a women's 8-8.5 shoe. The socks are so huge I think a small would still be too large. They are also a little too snug at top. Going back.

These socks are not exceptionally warm, and most importantly, they can NOT be washed/dried in accordance with the catalog/website product information/instructions. Following the LLB washing instructions, mine shrunk at least three sizes!
As usual, however, LLB's service person was extraordinary and immediately sent a new pair - I'll hand wash the replacement pair and hang them on a clothesline - if I can find one!.

These socks are a lighter version of previous offerings with this description. Additionally they seem to have more synthetic fiber presumably to promote a more easily stretched sock. Although comfortable enough on initial wearing, after time the wool compresses and the synthetic fibers begin to make an impression in the skin. I would be reluctant to wear on a long hike. Unfortunate, as the socks purchased prior to these are quite nice.

I ordered two pairs of these socks to prepare for winter. When they arrived, I wore one pair out of the box for about four hours. When I took them off, I noticed that the stitching at the toe of one sock had unraveled by a quarter of an inch. For the price, I don't think that should have happened. I re-stitched them and will continue to wear them, but somewhat disappointed by the quality.

washed only twice and the threads are pulling apart, runs all over the socks, and threads fuzzing up?? size says 5-9, wear a 7 and they are too small.
