I had been pondering just picking up a military surplus wool sweater for cheap but the women's specific cut on this sweater is what sold me. This is the only women's specific version of this style of sweater I've come across and it works well for me. Based on others reviews, I got an extra small since I like a close fit. I typically wear a small or occasionally a medium but in this case the fabric has enough stretch over my boobs to be as flattering as a sweater this thick can realistically be. It is scratchy but I don't mind as I typically have it over at least at T-shirt. I use it for outdoorsy activities (sledding, hiking, bushwhacking, general adventuring etc) and find it warm but breathable. I love the classic UK 'jumper' look and find that I can dress it up or down depending on the rest of the outfit.

Wanted this sweater for winter sporting clay adventures and it delivered beautifully. Wore today for its first outing - clear, windy & chilly January afternoon and it kept me toasty. Paired it with a slim fit long sleeve tee, skinny jeans, Bean's cotton ragg camp socks, duck boots and their Signature quilted packable jacket and was very comfortable enjoying the outdoors for a few hours. Even with the sweater/jacket combo I could still zip my shooting vest and had full range of motion. Fits true to size with room to spare.

I used to be a big fan of wool sweaters, but they got cheap and thin until I found this one. This is a tightly woven sweater, so it takes a lot of wear to have pilling as opposed to sweaters that look old after one wear. I have worn it several days and have almost no pilling. Yes it is somewhat scratchy, but I've had cashmere that is worse than this and you get used to it. I can't believe how warm it is. It feels like I'm wearing a blanket. Honestly, I can't believe it's not more expensive. I bought the grey and would buy another but the dark red and black aren't good colors for me. Please made these in other colors such as Ivory, Navy, Olive, and Mustard. I would buy more!

I love this sweater! It fits very nicely - snug but not tight, and very flattering. Perfect for chilly or drafty buildings. Great for layering under a winter coat for an extended period in cold weather -- like a dog walk!

This sweater is perfect for outdoor activity on a chilly day.
The fit is close to the body. Wearing an under-layer is good bc this is straight up merino wool and it is WARM. Also: looks fierce!

I bought this in black last year and waited for it in gray and dark red this year. It is so warm and cozy without being too heavy-a tiny bit itchy but I don't mind! I love the weight of the wool, yet it is light, and the shaping is flattering. Length is perfect for me (I am 5'8"). I would buy this again if it came in other colors, like green or navy. Love it!

I tried this on in the store and it was hands-down the best-fitting sweater I have ever had on me. I have what I lovingly call monkey arms. Very long. This sweater was actually perfect, even with rolled sleeves like in the photo. So immediately once I got home I tossed it in the washing machine (as anyone that's worked retail does) on the hand wash setting, cold. Shrank like 3+ inches. I am an idiot. Do not be like me. Get this amazing sweater and take care of it the way it asks you to. I am undeterred, I will end up re-buying and buying all other colors.
If you're reading this Bean, I'd love it in a forest/olive drab green too :)

Love this sweater!! Owned it for just a week so far but I just tried it in 27 deg F in a snowstorm while walking the dog with a 250 mg merino wool base layer (considered mid weight) and a summer hard shell rain jacket and I was perfectly warm. I'm one of those people whose cold all the time so this is impressive to me for a sweater.

I love this sweater! I wear it on the weekends snowshoeing and then to work on Monday. Warm, functional and stylish - runs a little large, but that's part of its charm.

I bought this sweater for a trip to Finland and it kept me warm without feeling too bulky. Easily layered with tee shirt or silk underwear. Fit very well and dressy enough for dinner out.

This is my favorite wool sweater on LLB. Some of the other styles are bulky around the middle, but the ribbing on this sweater makes it more flattering. Besides, it is incredibly functional and warm.
I normally wear a Large, but the medium with a tee underneath fits me well. (I have broad shoulders, and I need an x-large in some styles.) The fit is nice and snug without being tight, so I could have taken a large for a little roomier fit. The sizing seems forgiving.
I also have this sweater in the men's Henley style. The men's medium is a little larger than the women's, but the arms are quite a bit longer. So any ladies who have longer arms may consider the men's.

To start, I am VERY picky when it comes to a clothing purchase. In most cases, for the price, the quality is far from worth it. - I meticulously examine every potential purchase before I hit the "submit order" button. So... I purchased the "black" two winters ago, which has become a layer under my ski jacket. Bought the "wine" recently, for warmth & good looks! Plan to buy the charcoal most likely next winter. My husband has one also. (Got it for him as a b-day gift, looks very handsome on him!) We live in the Adirondack Park & these sweaters are an "essential". Although they were originally for the men, Bean has done an excellent job structuring this sweater for the women's version. It owns a rich & practical quality. Can be dressed up over a thin layer or casual, such as I use one for skiing. Seems to good to wear as a layer out on the hill, but the warmth can't be beat. The fit is perfect; Bean - Don't change a single thing!

I miss solid color wool sweaters - why are they so hard to find these days? The Commando crewneck is super warm and fits well. I bought a small and it fits just right. I love the shoulder and elbow patches - they add a bit of contrast. You need to wear a shirt under it so it's not scratchy, but if it's that cold, you need that layer anyway. I would love to see L.L. Bean revive the classic hunting attire that my grandparents wore: fitted wool sweaters, tweed jackets, etc.

This sweater was a Christmas gift from my son. I love the weight and look of this item. Its getting hard to find wool sweaters - let alone merino wool - and this one is a winner. It looks and feels great and the commando fabric patches add a bit of style.
I spend lots of time outdoors in the winter, working with and training bird dogs. This sweater going to get a lot of use this winter!

I love everything about this sweater. It is stylish & classy while still having an outdoor, rustic look. The overall ribbing is slimming for this over 65 year old body. Would highly recommend.

I love this sweater in black... and decided to go for the Wine color... and am so pleased. The color wine, also called maroon goes well with my somewhat pale complexion bringing out some of the pink and tan tones... and goes well with brown eyes and brown hair.... Growing up in the 40's and 50's maroon and wine were colors more for men... then in the early 60's I had a wool maroon jacket and skirt... and since then have loved the color. The sweater keeps me at the right temp all day. I had been concerned that it might be to hot at times... but no.. I have worn both the black and wine commando sweaters from morning to night in comfort. Excellent quality of wool and construction.

I love the Commando style sweaters and am happy to find a model for women. This sweater fits true to the size chart with ample room to layer without looking sloppy. The grey is a nice medium grey and the shoulder and elbow patches are a soft canvas and add a little extra styling. The sweater is made of soft wool and "itchiness" is the nature of the natural fiber. There is ample room in the sizing to allow for a collared shirt which I always wear under wool sweaters. Itchiness solved. Wonderful, simple sweater, ideal for casual and outdoor wear. Love it ! Very nice for the price point!

The small size commando sweater in Black arrived today and I put it on immediately and it fits just great!!!
It is not as long as the medium which I loved but returned. Now I am contemplating getting it in the dark red... color too.... The wool is warm, thick and lies flat, does not look bulky, but is smooth.
I do wear an LL Bean cotton turtle neck under it and that keeps the wool from being itchy.
I am around five ft. three inches... give or take,
around 140 pounds, more of a pear... This sweater is flat on the chest... so not for showing off feminine endowments.. but i am well past that age and love its quiet dignity as well as how it keeps me warm.
