I first heard about ALTRA after listening to Zach Bitter. I'm an avid backcountry fisherman/hiker and needed to replace my old boots, but I never figured they would be this good. These are AMAZING!!!

I had to get a full size larger. Normally wear an 8 but needed a 9 in this shoe. I have been wearing them for three weeks doing landscaping. I love the extra cushion and have stayed waterproof. I have worked in rain and snow and no wet feet. Also, I have been walking on all kinds of different terrain. Pavement, gravel, rocks... I have not had any part of the sole rip off as previous reviewers claimed. I am thinking that problem has been remedied. I certainly will order these again. I am a woman and purchased the men's version in brown because the color combination was much better than the women's options. Altra please make better, darker colors the women's. I have had horrible planter fasciitis and Altra shoes have been one of the key components of my recovery.

I have Olympus 4 and 5 trail shoes and took a chance on these GTX Mid Boots based on my enjoyment of those other shoes. The Boots have been great...still too early to tell on durability, but after a few mid length hikes they are holding up well, keep my foot warm and dry (only been in snow so far), and fit is great. I had to be sure and cinch up the ankle collar to lock down the heel well, but that did the trick. Locked down heel and wide forefoot makes for a happy guy. Size wise..I went up a half size compared to my Olympus 4 and 5 trail shoes, if that helps. Since I wear boot socks with these and they have the GTX lining, I'm glad I went up half size. Plenty of toe room and not too sloppy. Weight wise..these feel so light compared to normal hiking boots, but heavy compared to trail shoes.Thats what I expected. It's be best if you can find them on sale as I know shows/boots are getting so pricey these days. But I'm digging these and wearing them a lot.

I usually were 10.5 but got 10 in altra 6 running shoe so I ordered 10 in this. Sent back exchange for 10.5 and they fit perfectly. They are so comfortable. Also I have flat feet and the arch is next to nothing which is great for me.

I'm a ups delivery driver @ Mt. Raineer. The Best dry shoe with amazing depth in the sole with extra pad for cushion. I really dig the traction on theVibram; although a couple of ball pad black rubber strips have come off in three weeks. I still will try and Finnish the winter in them. Awesome shoe

Since I retired, I have probably bought 6 or 7 size 14 lone peak men's hiking shoes along with other Altra shoes. Love em. Between walking the neighborhood and long distance hiking trips in Europe, I probably walk about 2,500 to 3,000 miles a year. I thought I would try the Olympus. I like the comfort of it a lot and it looks like it might have more durability for hikes pushing 1,000 miles. My only complaint about the Olympus is the length of the shoelace. They need to be about 6 inches longer. Even though the laces are longer than lone peak, they are not long enough. I am 72 years old and have learned over time what various shoe inserts will do for the health of my feet. Even without inserts, laces are not long enough Plenty of extra shoelace length on lone Peaks though.

I hike the woodlands and forests of Pennsylvania (aka Rocksylvania) frequently. Usually 4 to 12 mile treks. Rain is no deterrent. I rely on waterproof, traction, comfort. Altra stands behind them.

These are great, very plush feeling inside. The lacing is great, the upper has hooks which allow for easy entry/removal. I have only had these for a couple weeks, but they still look new. I have used them on two mid length hikes and they are great. Lots of grip, not bulky, and breathable. All the things I like in a hiking boot/shoe.

Short version: I highly recommend these boots if you're looking to balance comfort with ankle and arch support. Very pleasing, if conservative, design and colorways. Vibram outsole grip is excellent on a variety of surfaces, but tread a little light for heavy mud. Great weight to performance ratio. Tested over the course of two weeks on a variety of backpacking trips and day hikes in Mendocino National Forest, and Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. Long version: Comfort/Support 5/5: Flat out one of the most comfortable hiking boots I've ever worn. I'm guessing this owes to Altra's heritage as a running shoe maker where much of their secret sauce lies in their biomechanics research into foot shapes. Most boots I've had, both hiking-specific and work-style boots, tend to favor traditional designs (justified from a time-tested durability standpoint), but require significantly longer break-in periods, especially leather boots, than the Olympus 5. No blisters or arch cramps or pinched toes even out of the box. Note that they run about a half size small in my experience. Design 4/5: Also, ankle support is the best thing in a hiking boot, period. You will step on a loose rock and roll your ankle, and when you do, you'll be glad this shoe has the mid-rise upper design. What is especially nice about the Olympus 5's upper is the choice of a soft cushioned material; it provides a good balance of support for your ankle without restricting your range of motion or irritating/rubbing your anklebone like some stiffer uppers can. The shoe's design itself is perfectly pleasing to look at it, but not especially inspired. The two colorways feature your usual "outdoorsy" fare of blues, greys, and browns. With the comeback of 90's colors, I would have liked to see some more funky and bright colors, or at least, an international red/orange colorway. Durability 5/5: In the roughly 10 days of hiking I've done in the shoes, I'm pleased to report that there is no noticeable damage or wear of any kind besides the usual light scuffs and scrapes. I am slightly bow-legged so the way I walk and run is especially abusive to the outer heels of my soles, and in this regard, the Vibram outsole leaves me convinced it will last thousands of miles before it wears down. I was a little worried about the suede outer lining holding up compared to a leather toebox, but so far so good, and it cleaned up easily. Performance 5/5: I'm not a weight weenie or ultralight backpacker by any means, but every ounce you save even on your feet can make a big difference. Given the absence of thick leather, these boots feel incredibly light and agile, even after hours of hiking. You could conceivably do some trail running in these boots and not be worried about the weight penalty. Grip is outstanding, as would be expected from Vibram, on everything from hardpacked dirt to loose gravel. The only time I felt the boots get slippery was when we trekked through some heavy mud, but most boots would suffer the same fate, even with larger lugs in the tread.

This boot is probably the best hiking boot that I have worn. The toe box has plenty of room and doesn't squeeze my toes. The laces tighten in the right places so there is no rubbing. I was able to go out on a difficult 10 mile hike with them right out of the box and they were awesome. I would definitely buy these shoes and would recommend them to my friends and family!

I really like the quality put into this shoe. It feels good and give great stability when on rocks and dirt. Great traction and comfortable to wear. Like that it has goretex and vibram in combination with good feeling all around. Love trail running in these.

I hike several times a week and do longer hikes on weekends in Colorado Mountains These shoes were great from day 1. Currently in AZ hiking canyons and the Grand Canyon. More support and under foot protection then lone peaks. The mid top keeps the sand out. No size issue s. Will get another pair in case Altria changes them or discontinues them

I've had these since the week they came out. They felt a little to tight on the ankle for the first two wears but now feel great. Love the amount of cushioning, most comfy pair of boots I've had. Unlike some others I see on here I have not had any problems with the outsoles falling apart. I have approx. 150 miles on these and about 50 of that is on the Ozark Trail where it is just sharp rocks of every size you can think of. I don't know if I got lucky with my pair or if it's a model issue. As I have the black pair, whereas all the photos with the soles falling off are of the brown pairs.

I've had these boots for a couple weeks now, and have grown to really like them. They feel a little tight in the toe heighth-wise compared to Lone Peaks, but they have plenty of length and feel good overall. The soles are very sticky, and the only complaint I have is that the orange laces are very bright. I actually replaced mine with a light brown/black lace that matches the upper colors. I will say in reference to other reviews that the gusset where the tongue joins the boot is a little uncomfortable for a day or so, but it feels fine after several wearings.
