The quality is good. My granddaughter usually wears a 1 in shoes. I bought these in a size 2 so they would last awhile but they ran small and she would outgrow them very quickly. I exchanged them for a size 3. Am waiting to get them.

Fit was a little too big for my 12 year old that wears a youth size 5.5, but they fit my daughter that wears a women size 6 without any issue.

There very nice but a little small would be better if they made them slightly longer

Waterproof and durable material, good for hiking. Hooks are unnecessary.

This is probably the 6th pair of these boots that I've owned. They are very comfortable, can wear them all day without problems. The reason for so many pairs is because they always fail in the same area...where the rubber toe piece meets the fabric portion. They last about 2 years. I am an adult female. I purchase the kid's size because they are less expensive than the woman's size.

Bought in early September, in November one of the top hooks broke for the laces. My daughter wears these every day. Luckily I was able to order a new pair online, but on the other hand, I had to return the defective ones to the store (there were no more available in store). These are great, I hope they last (and they keep making them) as we have a hard time finding hikers that fit and look nice.

My 5 year old daughter had a tricky time with these at first. Getting them on, taking them off, and the general wear of them was very different for her. They're the most structural shoes she has ever worn. But we replaced the laces with stretchy cinch ones and with some practice and a few weeks of wearing she has started to really love them.

We really wish there was a kids size 7 in these shoes. Why must a 7th grader not have colorful shoes? We had to go up to adult sizes and saved these for the 5th grader.

Overall these boots seem like a good value. I actually bought two pair for two kids. They fit well, are comfortable and seem to have good traction and support. My kids are very happy with them. Unfortunately, on one pair (the size 3) one of the lace loops pulled out when we were lacing them up at the trailhead on their first use. We made due just and had to continue with the hike. Of course LL Bean was great and very quickly and easily replaced them. That was good but the same thing happened again with the replacement. I couldn't be bothered again so we just kept them and just tie the laces around the back of the boot. It's nit a huge deal just annoying and the quality of that piece of the manufacturing process does not seem very good. Otherwise they have been great. The size 5 pair has had no issues and they seem to work well on the trails. Kids hiking boot options are limited and these still fell like a good choice.

I purchased these as my daughter's first pair of hiking boots. We're on Lake Michigan for spring break and they have been fabulous for her exploring the shoreline. The shoe strings do seem to come untied fairly easily, even when double knotted. That is my only compliant, though!

These boots were a hit with the six-year-old recipient, and the mom liked them too. I can't report much beyond that at this point--it's too soon to discuss things like durability. But they are nice-looking.

My first purchase of these boots was for my oldest son, after wearing through too many less expensive brands whose lack of quality and support was negatively affecting my son's feet & ankles. He quickly fell in love with them, and continued to wear these boots nearly everyday as long as they fit . . . hiking, school, gym days (when he could get away with it), yardwork and play, rain, sleet, snow. L.L.Bean's claim that these are waterproof was definitely tested and very happily held true. Amazingly, on top of all this near daily and extreme wear, the boots held up so well that we were able to pass them down to his younger brother looking still almost new! Our only "complaint" is that the laces are much too long, and drag on the ground if not triple knotted. Thank you L.L.Bean for such a high quality, enduring product!

I am a woman with tiny feet. I have searched endlessly for hiking boots that fit and are well made. These boots are well made, supportive, and have a last that fits my low volume feet and narrow heels while not scrunching my toes. I walked in them for 3 miles the day I took them out of the box. No breaking in was necessary. I was in rainy Portland for a holiday and the boots kept my feet dry and warm. I have not yet tried them in the Michigan snow but think they will do well. To me, the boots may run a little small but since there was no 1/2 size I am not sure. I wear ladies 4 in shoes so I ordered a kids' size 2. My other children's shoes are size 2.5 or sometimes size 2. However, my toes hit the end of these hikers so I returned them for a size 4. A size 3 might have worked but I wanted room for a soft innersole and a heel lift for one foot. I now have the extra cushioning I need and room for my feet if they swell in summer heat. I have walked up to 6 miles in these boots and will be using them for longer summer hikes. Some reviewers said the tongue is narrow and that is true but it hasn't been a problem for my skinny ankles. A few customers also said they didn't hold up well but I can't imagine that mine will not hold up. They seem to be made well. In fact, I just ordered a second pair to have a back up and I will order a third pair when these go on sale again. Lastly, the boots are not heavy like some size five adult hikers (to which I need to add 2 innersoles to even get a sloppy fit). I hope LL Bean makes these in a shoe or lower hiker style for summer wear. Shoes in this style would be great for walking while sightseeing and using on cobblestones.

My son said the hiking boots are very comfortable and a great fit. He is a Boy Scout and will wear the boots on hikes and camping trips.

These look like really nice boots and I hope they last, but it was frustrating having to purchase and exchange TWICE before getting the right size. My 11 year old wears a size 3 in most shoes and he measures a size 3 as well. Before purchasing the boots, I checked the LL Bean sizing guide. It instructed to outline the foot on a piece of paper and measure from the heel to the longest toe. In doing so, my son measured a size 2. Figuring they run big, I still went with the size 3 so he would have room to grow. The 3's were really tight, so I exchanged them for a size 4 - which according to the sizing chart should be huge on him. The size 4s were also too small. His toes were right up against the top. So we exchanged again for a size 5. They fit! Not a lot of room, but ok. So, he has a closet full of size 3 shoes and ONE size 5 from LL Bean. Sizing chart or the shoe is definitely off.

These are great boots. They keep the feet warm and dry, but they seem to run small now. My son has the shock mocs in a size 4, and the Bean's Multisport Sneakers in a size 4. Both fit him comfortably with wiggle room. We bought these boots in a size 4 and his toes go to the very end and the boot is too tight. We had these same boots in a smaller size earlier this year and they seemed true to size at the time, meaning he was in the same size 3 versions of these boots, shock mocs, and multisport sneakers all at the same time.

Ordered for my 9 year old son who will NOT wear rubber rain boots. We ordered the shoes that are orange and red. Luckily I read the reviews so made sure I ordered the color I wanted. My son will wear these when it is wet or rainy outside to school. He does ask for help lacing the top of the boot and tying them. They were a bit on the pricey side, and we hope to hand them down or sell them after they do not fit him.

I thought the photos were mixed up similar to other reviewers, so I called Customer Service to make my order. The rep said that the Marine blue is really dark with yellow laces and the Dove gray has gray accents below a blue top. It turns out the photos are correct, it's just the names that are a bit odd. We ordered the Dove gray because we wanted the blue top ones. I thought the blue was too bright but my daughter liked the color so all is well. She's only worn them on 2 hikes so far but they seem to be a good kid's boot. My daughter's only complaint is that they make her feet too warm, but it is summer time now. Should be good the rest of the year.

My daughter has used these boots on a few family backpacking trips and they still look brand new top and bottom. Granted we were traversing some pretty wet terrain on some long days, but her feet end up wet if there are puddles involved. It's to be expected I suppose, but even with gaiters her feet are wetter than her parents. Perhaps her feet are too hot?

Very nice looking, sturdy boot. I have owned Bean hiking boots that have lasted for years and years and I'm sure my son will outgrow these before he wears them out. These will be perfect for hiking and camping in. Everyone knows that little boys are so hard on their clothes so I knew I needed to get him a quality boot. These defenitly fit the bill. Well worth the money.

These were heavier and clunkier than most of the kid's hiking boots my daughter tried on. I do not think they would stay dry on wet hikes (and they only claim to be water resistant). There are a few places near the sole of the boot that are nylon instead of suede/leather - same on the top of the toe. For that reason, these seem best for fair weather hiking. The boot fit more snugly than Merrell, Keen, or Columbia boots. Daughter did not have room for a thick wool sock in size 2.
I'd also recommend:
Keen, Columbia, Merrell

I have been purchasing Trail Model Hikers for years. Well over a decade. Everyone in my family has owned many pairs. Unfortunately, the quality and craftsmanship has gone down on these, as well as the LL Bean guarantee. We only use these boots for Hiking- they are not for daily wear. When lacing up the boot for my son to hike Mt Pierce in NH yesterday, the metal eye hook popped out. I have a log of how many hikes we've done and how many miles these have gone. It's about 20 miles. These boots lasted 20 miles before having a quality issue. I called LL Bean Customer Service, unfortunately we're a week or so over their new guarantee guideline - even for what is obvious to me a quality issue (the metal eye hook popped out) and got a perfunctory explanation of how to have a quality review done- mail them in and wait for a response? In the meantime, it's hiking season and my son needs boots. Which means I'll need to buy a new pair. I don't have time to wait for a review- so I'll buy a new pair, but it probably won't be the Trail Model Hiker.
