The loop handle on the top ripped the first day my daughter used the bag.

We purchased this backpack for my now 12 year old, it was used for the end of 5th grade and all of 6th grade. The small pocket zipper broke completely and Pinochet was held together by safety pins for the end of the school year. Purchase LL Bean because I still have packs from 20+ years ago in great condition, cannot believe that this only lasted for a year and a half. What a disappointment for an expensive backpack.

Bought this in February of this year and this is already happening to the water bottle pockets. Only used for water bottles. Expect more from a $50 bookbag.

My son never have books in his book bag only paper in the 4th grade. Strap broke. School started in august and the strap was broken in October. Very disappointed. Then expected me to send the book bag in, just to get another why. Why? You have proof that I just purchased it. That should be enough to just get it replaced from poor quality.

I was used to LL Bean's high quality for many years. My daughter used her backpack for 2 years, and the zipper is already broken. I understand it is over the 1 year return policy. But, extremely disappointed with the quality. LL Bean backpacks were great, reliable quality and would easily last for many, many years!

My elementary aged son used this backpack from August till December. First the waist strap came off then the shoulder strap came off from the bottom corner, making it unusable.
Customer service was not helpful.

I do not recommend purchasing these backpacks. This is the second I have owned that has broken in less than a year of owning it. LL Bean will repair but you have to send it in. These backpacks are for my kids during school so sending them in is not an option.

I have ordered and returned TWO of these backpacks in the span of 6 months. Both of the mesh side pockets ripped on the first one within 30 days of use. The bottom seam of the second one tore open within 4 months of use. Backpack was not overloaded nor poorly taken care of... What happened to the quality? I had a LLBean backpack when I was a kid that survived being run over by a car. This one couldn't handle normal use for a short period of time.

We purchased the two of these backpacks for our boys. Within weeks the backpack strap on one began to fray and break lose. I returned it to the store and they gave me a new one. Within two months it happened again in the same spot! After reading these review it appears this is an obvious construction flaw yet LL Bean continues to sell them.

We splurged on this bookbag for my fourth grader, thinking he would have it for years as I had mine for years as a kid. It's spacious and worked great for awhile, but the strap broke already in February, after less than a year of owning!!! I reached out to customer service and never heard back. Super disappointed, guess we need to look elsewhere for something that will hold up for a few years.

My son got this backpack in September for 3rd grade. He doesn't carry anything very heavy in it. One of the straps broke clear off on the bottom right side attachment in January (4 months of light daily use) and then I noticed the other was fraying too at the same spot. We have a smaller llbean backpack he has used since he was 3 and the straps are just fine on that one. I really hope this is not the direction LLbean is headed as it looks like this has happened to other people too!

We bought this backpack for our 9 year old grandson for school. It tore within two months of use. He is now using the LLBean backpack that he has had since he was four. He complains that the design is "babyish" but at least the backpack was of better quality five years ago. And the refund was a gift card which now obligates us to buy another LLBean item to get our money back.

So disappointed - one of the straps of this backpack started coming undone one week into use. This was for my second grader who carries almost no books to/ from school. I was expecting better quality from L.L.Bean.

I bought this backpack based on the good reviews. It is a very cute and spacious backpack, but it is flawed.
My 7th grader has used it for 3 months, and the zipper has already derailed. It's not fixable. What a shame. This is my first purchase from this company, and unfortunately, it'll be my last.

When my son's old backpack wore out, he really wanted the same backpack he got nine years ago. So, his grandma bought him the same bag in the new color.
He loved it, until nine days into the school year. On the ninth day, the top strap that allows picking up the backpack one-handed broke. Later that day, one of the shoulder straps broke. Since he doesn't carry his backpack with one strap, he cannot use it.
He is not rough with his backpack (although he was rough with the one that lasted nine years.) He carries one book, a lightweight laptop and a couple of small spiral notebooks. This is completely unacceptable! We've had discount backpacks that cost less than $20 that were better made.

The backpack has not been used more than three weeks today is the first day of the fourth week of school. It is already falling apart I would not be so upset but it is going to take up to six weeks or more to replace this. Reason I buy L.L. Bean is so I do not have to be buying backpacks All the time.

Purchased the deluxe version for my 3rd grader who needed a bigger backpack than his Original Book Pack. Quality isn't even close to what we purchased a few years ago or what I knew growing up. Fabric is incredibly stiff, which would be fine for durability purposes; but the straps are unbearable. Bulky, way too close together at the neck and my son complained about the discomfort when empty (I tested it too, just awful) - can't imagine what it would feel like when full. I'm not sure why LL Bean changed the formula but this is unwearable as is. Maybe it's this specific pattern and the solids are better.

We're only beginning the 3rd week of school and already the strap has tore. I guess maybe they don't make them like they use to.

This bag is a great size and I think my son would be able to use it for years, but the mesh pocket on the side is not durable enough. I have had two of these in a row both fail at the same spot, within a few months of using them. The first one I exchanged under the warranty, but the second one I didn't bother. I guess I'll just sew it. This is a 28oz water bottle and the backpack was used by my 3rd grader, so not unusual use. The other backpacks have cloth water bottle pockets and those hold up much better. I'm disappointed that something I bought to last a look time started looking trashy almost immediately.

I was really excited to purchase what I thought would be my 3rd grader's last backpack until middle school (or beyond). He was pumped about the pattern he chose and I was excited about the size and LL Bean quality. At first look the pack is nice but the quality is pretty terrible. The fabric is stiff and cheap feeling, doesn't feel at all like the original book packs we bought just a couple years ago. The straps are unwearable; they are thick, too close together at the neck and I can't imagine how uncomfortable it would be to carry when full. When compared to the original book pack we still own, it doesn't even seem like it's made by the same company. As much as I love the nostalgia of LL Bean's backpack, back it will go.

Strap broke on the first day of school. It was not sewn on properly. We will not be purchasing LL bean products going forward.
