This backpack is big enough to hold my middle schooler's binder, folders and computer (they aren't allowed to use lockers), so that's a plus. This is the second time I've purchased this style of backpack because of the roominess and quality. The last one I purchased lasted throughout the entirety of elementary school, multiple washings in the wash machine. It was very durable. This backpack has lasted about 2 weeks before the stitching on the loop on top of the backpack has come out on one side. Other than that, the functionality everywhere else on the backpack has held up thus far in this new middle school era.

Great backpack, the two sections don't work for my kid. She needs all books/notebooks all in one

Beautiful purple backpack that I bought for granddaughter, which she loved. Unfortunately,, it arrived with the handle ripped- it appears that it was possibly cut when a box containing back packs was cut open.

Quality of fabric not as thick as previous years. Had it been it would deserve 5 stars.

Great book bag with lots of storage room and great pockets for organization!! The only problem is that my middle schooler's hanging loop at the top broke within a month of using it. My high schooler is on his second book bag and hasn't had any problems, so this one may have just been defective.

This bag has held up well during daily use from 5th-8th grade. BUT, I'm now going to buy my child the smaller-sized medium (24L) bag for high school. Why? This backpack is so large, my child carries WAY too much to and from school, never learning how to manage what actually *needs* to be carried, never going through and filtering out old papers. It's over 25 pounds when filled with books, papers, pencils, etc. (I don't think they even know what's truly in there!) I don't think a student truly needs a 37L backpack to use daily, even with a laptop.

My kids loved this backpack in high school and now in college. It can fit a ridiculous amount of stuff (even works as a bag for a weekend away). Their only complaint is the lack of straps on the side that could tighten up the load... This is a common feature on hiking packs, and on the Comfort Carry Portable Locker Pack, so why not on this one? Depending on how you have the different pockets stuffed, the pack can try to pull you over backwards - it would be perfect if it just had straps to help keep the load close to your back. LL Bean - please take notice!

Absolutely love LL Bean backpacks. I have bought numerous ones over the years for both myself and three kids. They typically last for several years. This is the first one I've had an issue with. I bought this bag for my son who is in 3rd grade. We have only had this backpack for one month and the water bottle holder on both sides has torn and I'm already having to return it. Very frustrating. Love the bag, dislike the mesh material for the water bottle.

Mostly perfectly organized for school-based use. I docked a star because the side mesh pocket are a little too shallow for water bottles (they fall out).

My kids love it and I like that it'll hold up for at least two years before they need a new one. Their school has them max out the capacity with all the books, so the durability really comes in handy. I do wish the side pockets weren't mesh, they seem to get caught on other things and break. Would be better if this backpack had the side pockets be of that same material. Then it would easily last the kids way longer.

EDIT: The strap broke the first time we used the backpack! The sewing was clearly faulty; one strap is totally fine and the other literally snapped the first time we picked it up. It was holding maybe 5-7 lbs. I truly hope LL Bean makes this right because my son won't have his backpack on the first day of school. ***LL Bean is sending my son a new bag! He's disappointed because they are out of the color he chose, but we are glad to have a new bag. This one was clearly just a fluke. We had the smaller backpack for all of elementary school, and it is still in great condition. My son wanted something larger for middle school, since he has more books and school supplies to schlep around. We didn't even shop around, we knew this was what we would buy because his old one (and mine from elementary school in the 1990's) is still in such good shape. This bag is clearly good quality, and it holds 100% of his back to school supplies, including 7 3-ring binders. This will easily hold any homework, PE uniform, etc.

Just what I was looking for to replace my 30 year old leather backpack which I still love, but it is heavy when empty. This one has just the right number of compartments, zippered pockets and exterior water bottle holders for overnight or weekend travel. I will not completely retire my leather bag, but when weight is an issue, this bag is light and roomie and will be my go to.

Great except whimpy side water bottle pockets. This is actually the second one I purchased. The first one is perfect with all the zippered pockets and compartments. The problem was the elastic gave out on the side pockets and no longer holds a water bottle. Also the pockets are shallow so only hold the shorter hydro flask bottle. If the bottle is not secure, then there is the danger of it falling out - hopefully not on the head of your child!

It's a very nice back pack but the strap that goes around the waist is too short. Needs to be longer and adjustable.

It is too early to tell how durable the backpack is. It looks good. I was disappointed that it didn't come monogrammed. I entered the monogram information, but then saw my discount code wasn't captured and had to go back and enter it again. I must have forgotten to re-enter the monogram information, because I wasn't billed for it, but I didn't get it either. A small disappointment.

Empty the straps bothered my neck & I thought maybe it's designed for children, not adults, so almost sent it back, but the other backpack I'd bought for a trip to Scotland was a bit too small for what I'd packed & whatever things I'd acquire through the trip. This trouper was enchanted, no matter what I put in it, there was still room on the way home to cram more in and it's ultra sturdy for the abuse the zippers, straps & bottom took. Yes, it was crazy heavy, but once on my back was surprisingly not a strain! Fully loaded was still able to stuff into the overhead or under a seat. The only issue was I will use a waterproofing spray for next trip. A day exploring Glasgow in the rain things closest to the top were damp-not wet, which I suppose is actually a positive point. It's a keeper.

I have 4 kids and since they started preschool I have always bought LLBean backpacks (my youngest is in 4th grade and my oldest is now in 10th grade). I never felt like I had to buy a new backpack every year because they hold up so well. The only time I buy a new one is when they have outgrown it. And, L.L. Bean has always provided a variety of sizes. I'm only giving this backpack 4 stars because the main zipper continually gets stuck on the flap that is supposed to cover the zipper. I know this can be pretty common when it comes to zippers, however, I feel like the flap is too long and catches the zipper too easily. My nine year old has to constantly be reminded to be careful when he zips up his backpack, but I'd prefer he not have to think about it at all. We've had to "unstick" it numerous times and it has dislodged the zipper track many times as well. It's still a great backpack, just wish we didn't have to mess with the zipper so much.

Great backpack, but please fix the key fob! This backpack is perfect for my kid's high school needs. Lots of pockets and zippered pouches so he can stay organized. The only problem we have encountered so far is the key fob. It broke the first time we used it. Otherwise, it is a very solid, sturdy product that I would recommend to others.
