This backpack is well made and the perfect size for my second grader. However the thick inflexible shoulder straps really dig in to his neck and leave red marks, even when his backpack is packed light. The fabric is too rough and inflexible for rubbing on skin. Add some softer material on the upper shoulder straps and this backpack would be perfect.

I wish they had more colors like they use to have!

Great quality. Love LLBean backpacks. Ordered a Jr backpack 2 yrs ago. Still in good shape, just dirty. Ordered a new Jr Backpack to start 2nd grade fresh. It is SMALLER than the one from 2 yrs ago. I didn't pay attention to the dimensions since it was the same thing. Luckily, still big enough for her and since it was personalized decided to keep it. When choosing thread colors for embroidery probably best to stick with the recommended. We chose based on the online samples. Not quite the same in reality.

I loved the quality and print of this bag but returned it because it was smaller than I expected and I would've liked an extra side pocket (there's only one side pocket). The size is perfect for a preschooler and kindergartner, but I could see my kid growing out of it size-wise beyond those years, and wanted a backpack that would last longer.

My 5yo just finished his second day of kindergarten and his backpack already has a hole in it and significant signs of wear! For context - he is only carrying a water bottle in the side pocket and a folder in the main section. The durability is really disappointing.

Used for our first grader. Probably should've bought the bigger size to fit his matching lunchbox and folders in it a bit easier, but it worked fine. Our seven year old is small for his age and this bag fit him great. The print is vibrant and super cute. Overall, the fabric seems sturdy. The reflective part scratches easily. My main complaint is that the zippers didn't even last one whole school year!! How can that be? We've had LLBean backpacks that were used several years without problem. Disappointed in the drop in quality!

My son had used this for preschool just 3 days a week, and it has a hole in it in just 6 months. I was hoping this would last him years.. or at least one full school year. I'm disappointed in the quality.

I had the larger size of this backpack as a kid and I loved it for 22 years. When getting a first backpack for my child I knew immediately I had to get this bag. Disappointed and will not purchase again. The bag's seams aren't sewn tight enough and are separating. I'm worried if I put too much in, it will just bust apart. The cost is also too high for such a basic backpack, not to mention it's made unsustainably. Going elsewhere for the next backpack.

We bought this for our kindergartener thinking we could rely on the LL Bean brand and quality to last us a few years. Sadly, by the end of the school year, we had a hole in the water bottle pocket and frayed corners. Our kid isn't particularly destructive- the backpack spends a fair portion of the day on a hook.

I bought this bag for my son when he started pre-k in 2020. It held up as expected for the first year. This past school year, it didn't survive. It has holes, significant wear, and a couple broken zippers. I'm very disappointed. I was hoping to use it with both my sons (4 school years), but now I have to do significant repairs for it to be able to continue being used. (I've had no issues with the water bottle pocket.)
I bought it originally because I remember the 20 year warranty from when I was growing up. I still have one of my old backpacks that it is in great condition. I bought L.L Bean because I believed they were committed to quality. I was mistaken. They now only offer a one year warranty and their backpacks survive just beyond that.
I don't mind paying a bit ($5-$10) more if it means the backpack will survive long enough.
After everything, I still plan on buying my daughter a (used) L.L. Bean backpack. Even if I can only get a couple years out of $35 on a backpack, that's still better than having to buy several cheaper backpacks. I have already told several people about my experience, and suggest they only buy older pre-owned backpacks. The point of buying new (for me) was a decent warranty.

I gave this as a gift to a kid. After one day the zippers broke. I am getting ready to return/exchange it.

My daughter used this book bag for one single school year, kindergarten. and the strap is already hanging by a few threads at the seam. I now have to go buy her a new book bag to use for the rest of her elementary years. The bag is in clean pristine condition and we can't even use it anymore. We thought buying from LL Bean would mean great quality and would last for many years. Super disappointed!

We've generally had good experiences with LL Bean backpacks, so was looking forward to another multi year backpack for my littlest one. Strap broke after 15 months, unfortunately outside the return window with very normal school use. I think the solid color ones do seem to have better craftsmanship so would still recommend those but these aren't up to quality.

I've been purchasing LLBean backpacks for many years for my 4 children (now grown). This backpack is perfect for my little grandson. The weight of the backpack is good and the adjustable straps will mean he can continue using it as he grows.

Too small for my kindergarten kids. After trying them on I tried to return to exchange and I would have had to pay 6.50 per bag to exchange plus I used a coupon. After learning about the $13 charge, I decided to just buy the next size and return at a later time. Now I have to pay to return and lost my coupon.

We had this backpack for less than three months (and less than two of daily use) before the strap simply snapped in half right above the seam. We will not be purchasing an LL Bean backpack again.

The bag itself is really cute, but the water bottle pocket started ripping the first week of school and is now not attached to the gray part at all. Not a good bag choice if you want to pack a water bottle.

I have been using LL Bean backpacks for 30 years- since I was in K5 myself. I purchased two for my son and they both had the same issue. The zipper got stuck zipping up the material. Bean replaced the first one, but the second one is outside the 1 year return policy (we are at about 16 months). Originally I was told this was a user error, but it has now happened three times (once I was able to fix) and his teachers did it twice (two different teachers). I do expect better quality from Bean. I think maybe the kid's version of this pack is not quite as good as the bigger version. I ended up cutting the material out of the zipper and we are down to one usable zipper. I recommend trying the next size up (not 4-7).
