I bought these boots to wear on daily hikes with our dog. At first I found them to be really stiff but as I got used to them I appreciate how supportive they are and how much they protect my feet and ankles on rugged terrain. However they are NOT waterproof - after hiking through a pasture the morning after a rainy night the boots and my socks were soaked through. It took several days for the boots to dry out and I had to wear sneakers in the meantime. This was a big disappointment since the waterproof claim was a big selling point for me.

There isn't enough padding at the top of the tongue and it hurts my ankle when I walk. I'm hoping they will break in with use?

This is a great boot for fit, comfort and support, but definitely not waterproof. The second time I wore them I walked through wet grass and found that out.

I was replacing my old l l bean hiking boots that I love, when the soles became loose after many years. My feet are wide. These boots seemed similar, and they cost less. But I could not get my right foot into the new boot. So I returned them.

I got these for work. I go into people's backyards all day as part of my job. Lots of walking on uneven ground. It took a couple weeks of painful blisters on my heels for these to break in, but now they feel fine. They are comfortable, (I use inserts for added cushion), but they are not waterproof. They resisted water the first day, but after that, no. Walking in the morning dew-covered grass, or if someone had their sprinklers on, the boots get soaked, my socks get soaked, and stay like that all day. I have to put them on a boot dryer almost every day. But if you don't plan on walking in wet conditions, these aren't too bad.

I bought these for hiking around Mt. Desert Island this summer. I decided to wear them this winter to break them in. I would suggest wearing with only thick socks at first. First wear, I wore thick boot socks. Second wear, I wore thinner socks on a warm winter day and ended up with a cut on one ankle and bruising on the other. I hope after the break-in period that these become five star boots, because the traction, warmth, and waterproof aspect of these boots is very appealing.

They are pretty comfortable. Occasionally rubs on ankles even with socks. Keeps my feet warm in cold weather.

Looked like a ski boot on my foot. The sides and back were too high for my leg and dug into my skin. Could barely walk in them. Not the first time I have worn hiking boots. Expected a better fit.

I purchased these hiking boots with the hope that they would be as comfortable as a pair I purchased previously. Unfortunately, the boot, even in medium width, was much too roomy. I will look for another pair, just not through mail order. LL Bean continues to have high quality merchandise and I love shopping with them.

These hiking boots are a bit narrow for being a Wide size. I can only wear thin socks or they are just too tight. They also come untied often and I have to resort to "double knots". They are just OK. Don't know yet how waterproof they are, but I would not order these boots again. Not returning them as I really needed hiking boots and am hoping they will break in a bit.

i was disappointed that they only have one eyelet at the top - you have to keep tying them - they become loose -

These are comfortable boots, but I've only worn them around the house so far. I will have to wear thinner socks than I like to wear with hiking boots, as they are a little narrow (and I bought the wide width).

Color and size are great; however, boots are heavy and clunky.

I bought these based on customer reviews confirming what LL Bean claims - that they're waterproof. They might survive a quick trek across a creek, but they did not perform on a day of hunting in Eastern Montana. Walking all day in a couple inches of snow, with gaiters, resulted in soaking wet feet. The boots are really comfortable. That's why I'm torn. I haven't decided whether to keep them. I like them, but they do not serve the purpose for which I bought them. I did get my first cow elk with them, though, so maybe they are lucky.

Wanted to order a specific boot which I really really like. Of course those have been discontinued and this boot replaces it. I ordered the same specs, width, size etc.as the now discontinued ones but these are very uncomfortable as they are very narrow. I will be returning and may try the wide width instead.

Boot seems well-made and lightweight. I have a very high instep and very wide foot. Laces didn't go far enough down towards the toe box to give me the width adjustment I need. I generally use my own custom insole or superfeet, and with those, there just wasn't volume I needed. Ordered 8 1/2 Wide, Length was fine.

I ordered and received size 8 1/2, which is the size I always wear. I wore the boots for about an hour and a half and found that they were too big, both in length and height, which made them very uncomfortable. I compared them to my Oboz shoes, and the boots were about half an inch longer. I recalled reading a review by a woman who said the boots felt uncomfortable at first, but after a while felt fine. However, my other pair of hiking boots felt wonderful from the moment I first put them on, so I brought the boots back to the store and got a pair of Merrells that felt great from the start. Thank you for making it easy, L.L. Bean!

they were a great looking boot but just didn't fit me very well - ankle was a little high and stiff - I had to return them and had no problems taking them back to the store in Marlton even though I had purchased them on line - was able to trade them for a different boot that fit me much better

This L.L. Bean Trail Hiker 4 Water Resistant Boot was a huge disappointment. It felt like you were wearing a rock and the ankles were so stiff just walking around here from room to room that I was hurting bad and could not wait to get them off! I have a narrow foot-2 or 3 AA and this was just such an ill fit. I would never recommend this L.L. Bean hiker.
I'd also recommend:
Love OBOZ for hiking and Vaneli and Donald Pliner and certain Naots for casual/dress!

Nicely made boot in terms of construction, but not comfortable above the front part of the ankle - the boot is too high and stiff.

Even though I had ordered the wide shoe, it was still too narrow, so returned it. Unfortunately, shoe/boot sizing is never consistent.Last boot I ordered was the Four Season sneaker which is no longer available. Had lasted over ten years.

I hurt my ankle and my doctor told me to wear some supportive boots. My boots didn't fit due to swelling. I decided to try some boots from Beans. I bought these. There was a spot on the back that wasn't comfortable, it felt really stiff. I brought them home and walked around the house for about an hour. I looked up how to break in the back of Bean boots and then read the reviews (I should have read them prior to the purchase (I wouldn't have bought them)). They will definitely be going back.

I ended up returning these. Even though they were supposed to be a wide width, the toe box was still too narrow for me.
