I have many pairs of these and they never disappoint. Orthotics fit in them perfectly. My only wish is for better colors.

I have 2 pair of NB 1080s that I bought years ago and I have worn them happily every day even as they began to wear out. Bought NB 840 this past month, tried them on at the store, ordered them online, wore them around the house for a few hours with plastic bags on them to keep them clean. Then wore them for the first time out of the house for my daily walk and was almost hobbling by the time I got home, heals , ankles and shins hurt. Wore them day two with same response. A day of rest then wore them again, same painful experience. I guess I'm done with NB, these will have to sit on my shelf since I'm sure they can't be returned now that I have worn them outside. Just sad.

I am not as happy with the 840v5 as I have been with the previous versions (3 & 4). There was something missing in the style and fit of these that I had with the earlier versions.

I like these shoes a lot. They fit my foot well, I can use my orthotics with no problem and they are comfortable. I used to have a New Balance shoe many years ago and I'm not sure why I changed brands. Lesson learned!

These shoes are great for people with a wider toe boot but who do not necessarily have overly wide feet. I need more room to wiggle my toes and these shoes do the trick. The cushioning is excellent. You can tighten the laces to get more support on the foot arch as well. A very flexible shoe sole too.

I also have a pair of the New Balance 840, version 4. I actually like the version 5 a little better, especially the longer tongue. I would prefer the sole color to be something other than white with the black shoe. I have a very hard-to-fit foot because of a bunion and a heel insert required in one shoe. I am very happy to find the 840, both versions, that actually fit my difficult foot.

I've always loved the fit of New Balance. These fit well in the toe, but they put something plastic around the upper lace hole and it rubs my ankle. Also, this pair is noisy when I walk. Overall not as good as my old ones. I would not buy these again.

the shoes look great...the wide toe box makes your foot look shorter
I am disappointed in the smaller fit and inner seams which seem to rub against the outer sides of my feet
the 840 v4 model seemed to be a better fit for me If the shoe has these issues , why am I keeping them? It is almost impossible lately to get stylish shoes in size 8EE. Although companies like Brooks and NewBalance advertize that they have this size, none of their sites actually have them.
I will use the shoes , but probably not for the 5 mile walks I intended them for.
I'd also recommend:
my brands of choice used to be Brooks and New Balance because they seem to be the only companies tha

There's too much padding in the heel and tongue of the v5. I purchased the v5 to replace my v4s and prefer the heel & tongue of the v4s.

My feet were absolutely killing me and I desperately needed these shoes. Had been calling customer service and the shoe store near me. Finally customer service found one pair on line and walked me through purchasing it. They arrive two days later. In the meant8m3 I called the store yup they had so I asked for ALL that they had to be put away. Went in later ONLY two pairs of the same color so I took them. Decided to call the other store in town who Carrie's this shoe and he said no, but I'll call u when they come in. Great. As the other store wouldn't do that. Couple days later the shoes in the black came in and so I bought them. I am set for a couple of years I hope in case new balance has difficulty once again manufacturing them. All in all happy I got my shoes at long last

Bingo! After trying on (and returning) 4 other pairs of sneakers from other brands, I think I finally found The One. I have extra wide feet (thanks, bunions), so while I was going for fit vs. appearance, these satisfy both criteria for me. One small complaint- I don’t feel like the laces will last too long. They don’t strike me as very strong. If there is one thing I have learned, it’s that if by some miracle a shoe actually fits you, buy more than one because you KNOW that manufacturer is going to change them up one day, and they will not fit. I will never understand why they do this because it forces their current customers to go seek out another brand when they were so happy in the first place. But whatever. At least I will have a spare even though they are not cheap. At this point, I’ll pay for what fits.

This shoe has a high and wide toe box that can accommodate my custom orthotics without causing extra pain at mid foot from arthritis.

At the collar the shoes rub against my ankle bones - they come up the ankle too high. Loved the version 4, but this version 5 has some kind of wire right around the tongue which doesn't allow for flexibility. Also, my big toe rubs against the toe of the shoe so I'd have to order a 1/2 size larger.

I have a short very wide foot, as a result of years of shoes that are too narrow, I also have bunions on each foot.
The 840 is a close fit but I have to insert 'shoe trees' to allow for the bunions.
The 840v4 is a great fit in all regards, but I cannot find a store that carries a 7 2E. the shoe I got was the last one I could find.
I have not tried v5.
If you have any 7 2E v4 I would be interested in knowing the price and color.
If the 7 2E v5 is comparable to the v4 I would be interested to know the return policy if the fit is not good.
Thanks for your interest.

I need this shoe in a narrow and have not able to find. I need the narrow and this style. Yes there are people in this world with narrow feet. I have worn New Balance for years and was able to do so because of the narrow width and the ability to wear my orthotics.

I'm always wary when New Balance releases a new version of an old favorite, but in this case, everything seems to be the same as the 840v4 which makes me happy. This is my "go to" walking shoe and I am happy that the only change seems to be the colors which are nice (I got the light gray). I believe they did change the shape of the eyelet holes which should help with keeping the laces from twisting which was always a problem for me with the 840's. Overall, I am still very happy with this shoe and it will continue to be my favorite walking shoe.

But she likes the shoes.
She was disappointed that she couldn't purchase the ultra arch supports online that she could in the store. She has very high arches.

These shoes were to replace 840v4’s which fit well with its wide toe box. The v5’s are a half inch shorter and the toe box was narrower than the v4’s so I had to return.
