The tongue on these is a complete dealbreaker. I have a two year old pair of Torin 4 that I feel in love with on the first try on. Too bad Altra is making it hard to upgrade. I ordered four pair of Altra shoes in one order to find the “New One” for me. I sent all four pair back the next day. Who approved the tongue on these shoes? You’re Fired. Thanks for having me do all this work to find a new pair of shoes because it is none of your offerings.

The show fit 1/2 size smaller than what I wear in Brooks. But the biggest problem was the tongue - it really rubbed on my ankle, and I'm sure the made material would really irritate that part of my foot

Running in my Torin 4 was the best road running experience I've had. I run mostly outdoors and an average of 8 - 25 miles a week depending on training status. I did not want to believe the reviews about how hard the tongue was made so I bough the Torin 5 and hoped that I could force them to work. Not only was the tongue hard it's also longer than the previous tongue and thin to boot with a slot where the laces can pop through the tongue on the top of your foot creating another spot for friction. As the Torin 4 was a killer road shoe - I see no reason to put in a harder/thinner tongue on this newer model aside from cost savings. I'm returning this pair of Torin 5s and praying that Altra reads all these reviews and brings back an amazing Torin 6 next season. I ended up buying Hokas because I needed new shoes quickly - but they are disappointing all around compared to the Torin 4. Altra - please make amends and get this amazing shoe back to its glory.

I started jogging and needed new shoes, so to the store I headed. I have troubles finding comfortable shoes, as my feet are kind of reverse pizza shaped, wide toe box, narrow heel, higher arch. I tried on everything. Then the Altra Torin plush 4.5. From the moment I put them on, I knew this was it. I found them. Perfect wide toe box, excellent cushion, arch support was there. Zero drop took some getting used to, but I did it. And then I ran those shoes into the ground. I finally headed back to the store this past weekend to start the process of getting a new pair. I wanted the same shoes, unfortunately, Altra had come out with another model and the reviews I had read were...not great. But, I decided to try them on myself. They were mostly right. The Torin 5 is very different. Not as much cushion, the toe box seems narrower, which is confusing because Altra is known for their wide toe boxes. This is what people love, why are they making their shoes more narrow?? Every single other brand of shoes caters to people with small/narrow/normal toe boxes. But the reason we're all into Altras is because of the foot shaped, wider toe box. *please take note, Altra people* The tongue, while the same material as the 4.5s, is a little longer, thus making it more of a possibility that it rubs your ankle during motion. I haven't had too much trouble, as I was expecting it, so wear a bit taller of a sock. But I could see it being ouchie for someone wearing short socks. The laces are too short. Also, it seems like there's not as much space between the top of the shoe and the sole, like when you lift your toes up, it seems way tighter. My toes now press the top of the shoe with each step. I got on the interwebs to see if there was anywhere in this country I could order my Torin plush 4.5s, but no go. I may head back to the store and see if I can go up a half size in the Torin 5s to account for the less space, and even with the narrower toe box, this is still one of the widest you can find. I need new running shoes, but I may just wait until the 6 comes out to see if they've fixed anything. If not, I'll have to try something else. I'm just so disappointed that they changed this shoe so much. Please, please Altra, go back. Please! P.S. if anyone knows where I can find a new pair of 4.5s in an 8.5, let me know! Any color will do!

Ok so I was recommend the Torrin because if my wide feet. I absolutely love the way the flat and very wide complete made for your foot to walk natural feel they have. BUT the shoe quality is HORRIBLE. The tongue is so painful right off the bat without any way for it to get better with how it's made. Also the bottom of the shoes came off first week. I decided to glue it thinking it was a fluck and guess what? NOPE. After 2-3 months of everyday where the bottoms basically fell off while holes in the top were easily made. Horrible quality for price and for what their reputation. Whoever runs Ultra now has run it into the ground.

I am a HUGE Altra fan and have run in them for years, but this shoe has changed my mind. The stiff tongue is so painful that I've had to figure out how to tie the shoe with the tongue down, which has caused lots of movement of my feet in the shoes. Unfortunately I'll be looking for a new shoe that can suite my feet and my running needs.

I always buy Altra Torins, I find they are the most comfortable for running and walking. However they seem to be getting worse with each edition. The tongue is uncomfortable and the bottoms are detaching after less than a year. For that price I am very disappointed. I miss the Torin 2.

I can't really tell you how this shoe fits and feels. The tongue was slicing into my leg. Had to return them and I'm so sad. I loved my 4.0's!

I am so disappointed in the Torin 5. I've been running in the Torin 4.5 Plush and love them. Sadly, the only "footshape" that the Torin 5 fits is a clown foot. The sole of the Torin 5 is a full 1/2 inch wider at the toe box than the 4.5 from my measurement. I do not have a narrow foot--I often return shoes because they are too narrow at the toe. These shoes are really wide at the toe, but still normal at the heel (I ordered a normal width). My foot was slipping laterally just walking around the house. Back to square one in finding a decent, cushioned lightweight running shoe (sigh).

OkayAltra shoes are my bread and butter. I have been wearing them for hiking, backpacking, trail running, and running since 2016. I easily have owned 12+ pairs and I have converted at least 5 other people to Altras. I've owned two other pairs of Torins, and fell in love. They replaced my Escalantes. The Torin 5 is a failure. Clearly the worst reviewed Altra. The Torin 5 has so much potential, but has two major flaws compared to previous models. The first is the ridiculously stiff tongue that has left many with cuts and abrasions on the front of their leg or near the ankles. I did not experience this, only because I knew as soon as I tried the shoe on that it would not be a good shoe for me. The second problem is the less voluminous toe box. The width of the toe box is great and similar to previous versions. It's the height that isn't so great. Depending on your toes, you may find that the top of your toes or toe nails rub the toe cap. I don't wear orthotics, but there certainly isn't much room for those who do. This is in contrast to earlier models of this shoe.
Aside from these issues, the shoe will be comfortable to many. I suspect that they might be great if you aren't running in them, or walking long distances.
Many of us are just sitting this model out and waiting for the new and improved model. There is no way that Altra will ignore all of this feedback on the next TorinAltra is very good about using customer feedbackwe've seen it with other models.
My only other comment is that the colors of the Torin 5 are very disappointing. Nothing fun. It's nice to have some muted options, but what about those of us who like to wear fun colors and add some "happy colors" to our runs? They just released two new color combos, that are better, but still aren't quite on the mark. But the colors don't matter as long as that tongue remains!

I loved the altra Torin's in 2019 and 2020. This years model has a skinny/sharp tongue that you have to wear protection over your ankle to prevent cuts. I'm bummed about the changes.

I love these shoes but the last two years has been a bust for me. As soon as I tried these on I immediately took them off. The tongue is so stiff and it cuts right into your skin. Just standing alone you can feel it and I can’t even imagine trying to run in it.

Although they are comfortable. The tongue is terrible, it cut into my ankle! After only owner them for a few months the sole started peeling off, when you pay that much you expect quality!

I've worn these shoes for a couple of months. The fit and cushion is great EXCEPT for the painful tongue everyone talks about. I wish I had read reviews before spending so much money on these shoes. I even trimmed it but got no relief. Altra, what are you doing to fix this??!?

I really feel bad for writing a negative review because I've been a huge fan of this specific type of shoe for years but recently that changed when I took my mom, who suffers from severe foot pain to get shoes, these were the shoes that fit her best.
But, later that day we discovered after she wore the shoes for an hour or so, the upper tongue of the shoe is defective. The length of the tongue is too long, pushing the stiff material into the ankle, actually tearing the skin as if not properly tested. .
The shoe is otherwise extremely comfortable..
She elected to continue wearing the shoes with large bandaids until we figure out a fix. I think we're going to try what others have said about sewing and cutting. Wish Altra would fix it and send it back to us. Maybe they will see this and help.

This will be the 5th pair of torin shoes I have owned. All the others I have loved. The tongue on this shoe cuts up my ankle. I literally have marks from where this repeatedly scratches at my skin. Everything else is great. I wish I could trade out the tongue for something better. I expect better for a shoe in this price range.

Shoe fits great and comfortable. Tongue is terrible. It is thin with a sharp edge that cuts into ankle. Even with higher socks, tongue is not cutting theough sock but still feels annoying pushing on ankle. Because of tongue, cannot wear shoe even to walk around the house. Would purchase again only if Altra redesigns the tongue.

I upgraded to the Torin 5 due to excessive mileage on my Torin 4.5. I was able to get about 20 miles in these shoes before the tongue wreaked havoc on my ankle. I didn't have outright bleeding as others have reported, but I did notice a wound at that site the day after my last run. Frustrating event for the price you pay for these shoes.

I LOVE the color of this shoe and was thrilled when the width was perfect. On the second week of having them the soles started to peel off. I purchased the same pair and they started peeling a couple of days of wearing them. I decided to keep the second pair because I loved how they felt but very disappointed. The tongue also does dig in the front of my ankle so I just wear thicker, taller socks.

I have been walking 5 miles 5 days per week for a couple years now. I started with the Torin and have continued to purchase. But this will be my last pair because of the tongue. I have to fold over and make sure the laces secure the fold or it would be impossible to walk one step without cutting my skin.

First let me say I have bought Altras exclusively as my running shoe now for many years. I love them for road, trail and off-trail. I do enjoy the EGO sole in a walking shoe but as a mature runner I really need more cushion. The EGO seems to compress quickly and I did not have that problem with the earlier Quantic.I think the EGO is great for the Luxe walking version but please please please bring back Quantic for the running Torin. Otherwise I will need to find a new brand. The EGO sole is just too not enough protection for my feet for running any serious distance.
