Senseride4 is great; purchased my pair at REI (Sorry, Zappos!) as I'd anticipated buying a pair of low hiking shoes but was convinced by these for their stability, build quality, and was intrigued by the lacing system. They are great trail shoes, for sure, and potential 0.5mi-1 mi road to trail commuters (as I use them). My only minor issues with it are some minor heel slippage on my left foot only (?) even with tight lacing lock down, AND the fact that when you lace them snugly, you can't then easily store the lacing rubber grommet into the space in the tongue where it's supposed to go (because the laces are already over top. What to do, Salomon? Something to figure out for version 5 of the SenseRide Salomon! Otherwise, happy with my very first pair of Salomons and probably not my last. ;)
I'd also recommend:
Hoka, NB, Saucony and other Salomon trail shoes (obvi)

1/2 larger/longer than previous version. I’ve worn 10s in all Salomon and in all other running shoes. these 9.5.

I've owned the Sense Ride 2, 3, and now the 4. So far this shoe has been durable, notably cushioned, and adaptable. Contragrip has always been good to me and value is good too. It's worth noting that it fits quite different than the Sense Ride 3, and to me feels longer and narrower. My feet feel much less secure and supported in the 4's as a result, even though the 3's fit like a glove. I could see them being a great shoe if they fit though. Make sure to try on both.

First pair of Solomon trail shoes. The style is great, and the quick lacing system is strong and unique. I found the tread to be a good "all terrain" type of shoe. As someone who is an occasional hiker, these were light, grippy, and fit the bill. I will say that if you are looking for forefoot protection, you may want to look elsewhere...I don't believe there is a hard plate, and you can definitely sense roots, rocks, and terrain. They are EU designed and sized shoes, as someone related. They were on par with my running shoe size (Brooks size US 10.5). I considered going with a size 10 for length, but as someone stated, the shoes run narrow...to get the extra width, I went with a 10.5 and was happy...the extra length was helpful on the downhills.

If someone told me I was running in the Sense Ride 3, I would have believed them. Although looking at it side-by-side you can tell version 4 has trimmed down a bit. I am finding my right shoe upper makes an annoying popping sound as the mesh flexes & folders during toe-off. On the interior side along my big toe.

I'm really liking the Sense Ride 4. I have 50 miles in three runs now and I'm really enjoying the shoe. These are my first Salomon's but I am a member of the clicking toe box club. These would be a 5 star if the toe box didn't click.

Having a large feet almost any shoes cause me blisters. I am coming from the sense ride 2 wihich where good but cause me blisters as well. Did 4 hours straight with the ride 4 and they where perfect. Non blisters!!! Non pain! They are for me true to side and the toebox is large enough for those having large fit. Thank you salomon keep it up

It's a great shoe for off road trails soft only. Great build quality. Very unforgiving on road so not much of a transitional shoe. Feet get beat up on harder terrain.

This year my shoes have a clicking sound due to the support behind the fabric. Was going to order a pair in gtx for hiking but not now. Id buy the 3's if I was you. Could be 5 stars. -1 for clicking

This is my go-to shoe for daily trail runs. It has the perfect amount of cushion, traction, and stability for just about any trail situation. That said, I do think this version 4 is a step down from the previous version 3. The fit is slightly larger and feels a bit sloppy compared to the version 3 which was true to size. This along with the new upper material leads to a popping noise when the shoe flexes.

I have logged just over 20ish miles in these, and have been quite pleased with the performance. Thus far the miles have been mainly hard-packed dirt and some loose rocks. They have provided quite solid traction in the semi-varied terrain. They slip a bit on steep loose rocks, but that is expected in these moderate lugged shoes. I intend to use these for local hikes, and use a more serious lugged shoe (speedcross) for mountain ascents/off trail exploration. The fit is pretty consistent with my other Salomon shoe experience. I typically run a 9.5 in other brand running shoe but Salomon I can accommodate with a 9. The toe box and forefoot do run a bit narrow, but I do have a low volume shoe. I would recommend walking around in them prior to logging big runs, but quite comfortable out of the box. Haven't run in Salomons prior, but these shoes have been a great reintroduction to the brand. happy customer

First thing I'll note is that Salomon marks this as a "moderate" cushion shoe when it's really not. Stack is quite low. I can't really see doing long runs in these unless you really care about cushioning. That said, they give a good groundfeel. Just not for me, but I still use them as hiking shoes.

Felt a little stiff, like other Salomons I've tried, and I don't care for the nontraditional laces.

bought these to replace my speedcross, and purchased a size up for when i'm wearing thicker socks in the winter. comfy, roomy toe box- although i have narrow feet. have not used these as trail runners but more trail hiking and they are just right. not sure how long they will last though- the mesh upper does not look very durable over the long run (by comparison i had my speedcross for close to 4years).

I am a longtime Speedcross 5 user and lover, but let's face it, we don't really need massive lugs when out ripping dirt paths and mellow trail, so the sense rides caught my eye as a good inbetween for my days when I might start on road and transition to trail or just ripping more mellow trails in general. From day 1, I loved them, I traditionally like a suffer sole and they're a perfect balance of providing some cushioning without feeling like feet trampolines. I mostly used them as daily drivers and long runs with some speed mixed in. The shoe even looks good, which is a bonus more than anything. My main issue is with these shoes is that their durability was lacking for my use. After owning these shoes and using them in my rotation for 3 months, on one pretty mild 18 mile run on rolling trails resulted in both toe boxes blowing out along the mesh to goretex seam line. This feels like a major flaw that left me super dissatisfied since I am so used to the bombproof Speedcrosses. It has left me wanting another pair of these shoes but also questioning if they're worth it if they simply won't last more than 3-4 times a week use for 3 months.

I have been a devoted Speedcross wearer for more than 10 years but I decided to try something else because the tread wears out too fast in the newer versions (6 months instead of the 12 I used to get) and the color choices are horrendous. Just got the Sense Ride 4 and they were very comfortable walking around the house so I decided to take them for a spin. As soon as I started out, I realized these can't be 8 mm drop. It feels like the Hoka 5 mm drop on my foot which is too low for me. By the end of only 2 miles, my legs were tired and sore - didn't experience any of that energy return I was expecting. They were good on the flat but uphill was a slog. While the heal locks in, there's no ankle support or any structure to the shoe. There was no way I could do my usual 5 miles. So maybe my feet are just too accustomed to the Speedcross 10 mm drop and support. I would definitely return these if I could.

I've had these shoes a while and I thought the clicking sound when I walk/run was just me but apparently it's not! It's obnoxious enough to not buy these shoes.

I was hoping that popping sound that came with the Sense Ride 4 would dissapear after some wears. To my chagrin, that ain't the case. Bummer all around. I am a true dedicated Salomon wearer...these would have been my 7th pair of Salomon's in the last two years. Not due to wear but simply I love the designs.

I bought these after Christmas. I sent a pair back because the size was too big than what I typically run in Salomons. Like many of the reviews state, there is definitely a clicking sound from the shoe tongue material. At first I didn't think it was bad, but its annoying. I also agree with other reviews, the quick lace is oddly placed too far towards the heal. I have to pull the tongue back and up, cinch the quick lace, adjust the laces and cinch again to get a good feel. As far as running comfort, I think I may buy insoles. It feels like there is not enough cushion on the balls of my feet. I used to run in X Missions, but I think Salomon got rid of them as a running shoe and reincarnated them as something else. These days I run more roads than dirt trails. So I may have to switch to another brand... been running in Salomons for almost 20 years. Too bad.

I have used the Sense Ride 2, 3, Max, and Pro shoes and loved them all!
So, it was without question to purchase the Sense Ride 4, due to my previous experience.
the placement of the pocket on the Ride 4 makes it impossible to tuck in the extra laces...just bad design. Additionally, the tongue has been constructed differently. While the shoe seems to perform as the previous models, there are some annoyances with the Sense Ride 4:
The bottom/opening of the garage is sealed shut by the lacing system when tightened, making it a challenge to tuck the lacing in the garage.
The top of the tongue is a bit stiff and tends to dig into the top of my ankle (a bit uncomfortable) for a while before sliding off to the side.
The shoe's new fabric in the toe box area has a "popping" sound with each step taken. (I thought this would go away after some use, but it has not)

These looked like well-made shoes, and I liked the unusual lacing mechanism, but even though I ordered a half-size larger than my usual shoe size, these shoes were so narrow that I couldn't even think of wearing them, and returned them.

I've put about 30 miles of trail running on these shoes so far. My local trail conditions are generally lots of small hills, tons of exposed roots and small rocks, a mixture of muddy areas, sandy areas, hardpack, slippery boardwalks over wetland sections, and, since the weather has been cold, some icy and frozen mud areas. Here are my impressions thus far:
I'm new to Salomon shoes, so I wasn't used to the speed lace system. It's been a mixed bag for me. I was surprised to see how quickly and evenly it tightens the shoe. But, tucking the little plastic end in at the top can be tricky since the top section of lacing tightens against the little pocket in the tongue. On the flip side, once it's tucked in it isn't coming out by itself. The lacing system slowly loosens up a bit for me, though, and I have to stop mid-way through my run to tighten it back up a little. The outsole is grippy and has thus far handled the mixed terrain and conditions very well. The shoe is overall comfortable for my foot (normal width) and fits true-to-size for me.
My biggest issue with the Sense Ride 4 is the stack height. It just feels a bit squirrely on more technical sections of trail. On flatter sections and on pavement it's great. But when faced with small rocks and exposed roots, the high stack means I have less sensitivity. On those sections, I often feel like an ankle roll is just a moment's loss of concentration away.
If your running is on mixed pavement and non-technical trails, then I think the Sense Rides are great. For me though, I just don't love the instability they give me on sections where the trail has lots of roots and rocks.

Sense Rides have been my go-to shoe since I started trail running. I've always gone with size 9.5 US. I find my forefoot swims around a bit in the toe box with this model. I'm on my second pair of SR4's in 3 months (heel on outsole peeled off - warranty claim made and honoured). The first pair was a bit more roomy than I remember, but not too bad. But the second pair is a clear half-size bigger than my SR3s. I've measured them.
My experience is corroborated by bob33's review here.
