I used to wear Escalantes, then Torins but the latest model just doesn’t fit me well and I hate that tongue.
So I tried the Rivera in a 9 (my normal size for running shoes) but am ordering a 9.5 to see if that gives me more room. My toes look like they are about to poke through the top.

I left a review prior to my first run in these, having done a week's worth of dog walks (3x/day) and wanted to update. The fact that the toe box on the Rivera isn't as wide as is typical for the Altra, it turns out, is a real bummer. These are walking shoes for me (which will save my Torins, Toru plushes, and Timps so it's okay) and I likely won't buy updated versions to run in unless Altra gives us the toe box width we all know and love. Still a solid shoe, I'd guess, for those who work on their feet! Light and comfy but not fast, nor spicy, and just too cramped.

I have just gotten over Cancer and my feet are numb from my chemo. My balance is not the greatest and the Paradigm feels better for working all day on my feet. The Rivera are pretty but not as comfortable. I have just ordered my fourth pair of Altra's because I love the way my feet feel at the end of the day.

Too small! There is a gap between the tongue and the edge of the upper when I have these laced up. I’m on my third pair of Lone Peak for trail and was hoping this Altra would be my new road shoe. Bummed out.

I love my torrins and purchased riveria for an extra pair, i wear a 7.5, these are at least a full size too small in length as well as not wide enough. returned them to get another pair of torrins, and was greatly disappointed for the same reason, the ones im wearing are 7.5, the same shoe repurchased only 6 months later is too small in length and width. I was hoping to make this my new brand as my feet are..odd. however these is no consistency to sizing in the same brand, or even the same shoe. Returns take weeks to process as well. Very inconvenient. in total ive purchased and returned 4 pairs.

The size 7 felt a bit too small, the size 7.5 a bit too big. They were too wide around the ankle and there's somthing about the cushioning I didn't like. I sent them back.

I've always worn a size 10 in Altras and this style felt like a 9.5. My toes hit the end of the shoe unfortunately. But still love them for the support and feel I always get from Altras.

I run 2-3 times a week. I was looking for new running shoes as my others were getting worn and causing blisters. When I fell upon these, I found that they felt good when I tried them on. After a few runs, I realized that a half size bigger would feel more comfortable. The size I ordered were just a hair too small. I contacted the website as instructed in the returns department, but have yet to hear back besides receiving an automated response about how "the email volume is high". I am apprehensive about stating that I would buy again from a company that dismisses my efforts to contact them according to their site directions.

They were ok for walking (I only tried around the house though) and a workout with weights but for running on a treadmill they were very uncomfortable for me and it was noticeable immediately. Had to return.

I loved the Torin 4. I also use the Esclante. With the end of the Torin I decided to try these. I like the soles, but the the extra puffy tongue is odd and makes the fit across my midfoot feel insecure but also too tight over the top of my foot when I try to lock it in with the laces. I also found it ran about a half a size smaller than the Escalante 2.5 and the Torin 4. I need to return for a half size large. My long second and third toes were bumping against the end and also rubbing against the top, since they don't seem to be quite as foot shaped as usual. A few tweaks and this can be a great shoe.

I am so sad that you don't offer wide width. Your Rivera is too narrow for us narrow-heeled, wide forefoot peeps. One of my feet is D, the other almost E.

These are my fourth pair of Altra shoes: Rivera, Olympus (2), Superior. The moderately cushioned sole is just what I wanted for street running. However, the width is narrower and toe box is less foot shaped and more pointy than my previous Altras. Has there been a design change? I have wide, boxy feet and I chose Altra primarily for the footshape. Also, in the Riveras, the contour of my big toe is visable on the top of the shoe, which has not been the case in other Altra styles. The shoes are well made generally, but the fit is not like it used to be.

Good cushion feels good on the run. Nice heel fit. Toe box feels small. I would be willing to try up 1/2 size, but not happy with the narrower toe box. The wider fit is why I run in Altra to begin with! Fix it Altra!

Since the discontinued Torrin4, I thought this would be equivalent and it wasn't. Nothing compares to the perfection of the Torrin & I hope Altra will bring it back!

I was originally not a fan of the shoe, but after wearing it around the house for a bit, I came to appreciate it more. My love of the paradigm 4.5 is still strong and I will always love that shoe but overall the new Rivera does a good job to help somewhat fill the gap. I don't feel like the shoe has quite the cushion I am used to but it's comfortable and more stylish, which we women are always looking for, aren't we?

These are my 6th pair of Altra's and my first disappointment. The material feels lower quality including the mesh upper and all aspects of the sole. I believe this shoe is designed to be a snugger fit, which is fine since I have a narrow foot. However, I've come to appreciate the wider toe box from this brand. This shoe almost feels like the cheaply constructed brand that shall remain nameless (think swoosh). Also, not sure why, but when I run in this show my left knee bothers me a bit. Doesn't happen with any other shoes in my rotation right now.

I really liked the color and style of these shoes. They provide good room in the toe box which is hard to find. They were comfortable as well and had good cushioning. I just felt they did not have any support and after wearing them all day (14 hours) at work, I was ready to take them off. This brand is very different from any other sneaker I have worn and it felt strange walking in them.

Not a shoe for feet with high arches. The arch support was surprisingly good, but when I tried to tie the shoes closed, the tongue rode up on the top of my foot so high I could see my socks between the tongue and the shoe, all the way to the base of the tongue. Even tied as loosely as I could make them they were too tight across my arches. The toe box was nice and wide but too short, rubbing on the tips of my toes. A larger size might solve the short toe box, but not the issue with my high arches.

I went to an Altra shoe demo at ELM store to see what the hype was about with these shoes, and the Altra rep recommended the Rivera and in a half size larger than I normally buy. I do about 30 miles a week. First 5 mile run in these shoes, my feet were sore by the 2nd mile. They feel too wide that my foot slides around too much. There is not much forefoot support. I have Morton's neuroma and require firm support in the front of the shoe for maximum support. This shoe is definitely not good for my condition, maybe as a walking/casual shoe. But not worth the money. Highly disappointed with this purchase. I was very dissatisfied with the customer service as well, which is typically very poor at ELM to begin with. Wish I could return this shoe but ELM doesn't accept returns after being worn once.

Went a half size up and while it fit overall, the toe area was unexpectedly cramped for Altra. Returned.

I bought this shoe for asphalt (road) race. It was disappointing in the sole and cushioning.
I normally purchase another brand and felt that I would try this brand (Altra). Disappointing to see similar $$ for this and poor performance

This style runs small! I ordered the same size that I get for the Escalante and Superior and my toes are hitting the front. I'll be sticking with the other Altra styles.
