First pair of altras I've ever returned. Vamp of the shoe really bit into my foot (top, side, where the shoelace part ends). Otherwise the shoe felt amazing, had the same wide toe box and springy cushioning I like about altras. If they work for you, they're probably 5 star, but may want to try these on first instead of ordering.

Fit much better than Timp 2, which had my toes rubbing against the top. These are much roomier without feeling sloppy, but may still be too tight for some. Only took on one, 10k run with mixed road/dirt surfaces and ride felt great. They did OK on pavement, but were great on trails. Unfortunately, the overlay on the side came off during first run. Hopefully, just a bad batch. My retailer was out of stock in my size so they replaced with Olympus 4.0.

I've never been able to get more than 250 miles on a pair of Timps without the upper blowing up on me, and with these, first 4.5m run out of the box the slick upper on both sides is already coming off... I want so much to love the TIMP, but it seems like I'm gonna finally have to accept going in a different direction

This review isn't much different than others. I have a half dozen pairs of Altra and love them, but with this redesign of the TIMP, Altra lost their way. Wide in the heel, and narrow in the mid foot, and at the toes. It's a reasonably comfortable pair of shoes but not the Altra design that you need if you have foot problems. Can't recommend these.

I loved the Timp 1/1.5, My favorite shoes!! I prefer the additional cushion over the lone peak, which I also like.
Sadly, Timp 2 became a tight, narrow shoe, losing the whole point of Altra's brilliant design. I waited, hoping the Timp 3 would be better. There are minor improvements with Timp 3, but still tight and low cut. My foot aches as I write this and I've decided that I have to be done with a relatively new pair of Timp 3's. Frustrating!
Please bring back the good qualities of the earlier Timps.

I am an Altra-ite through and through. In the last three years I've purchased and used at least 8 of their shoes. Primarily I run trails but also some road work here and there. I mostly use superiors, but also some Rivera, Escalante racer, and Lone peaks. I have run a 50k in their lone peaks and wanted a little more cushion once I got past mile 25 so I thought I'd try the timps. I had read a lot of reviews on different sites and had mixed feelings about them. I really wanted this shoe to work.
To give it credit, walking in it feels fine so hiking might be good. My feet definitely felt less of the rocks and roots and I think it would have done well for the distance in that regard. But there are other issues like my feet going numb (despite different lacing styles and tensions) and it just feeling tight. I tried them on in a store and it didn't seem to bother me, went with the larger size of the two I tried, but ordered from altra directly since The store didn't have the color I wanted. Out of the box they are nice looking and I was eager to use them.
In the end I hated running in them. Felt too tight and feet rejected them within just a few miles.
If the lone peak came in a slightly thicker version that would be incredible. For now I'm experimenting with adding the new skinny rock guards in my lone peaks and that seems to be good so far.

I bought women's 8 1/2 sized Timp 3's and men's Timp 3's size 7. The women's has a nice roomy toe box but the men's is so much smaller and tight in the toe box area. Makes no sense. I sent the Men's Timp 3 back. So confusing.

Use these for trail runs and OCR races. Timp 2s were good so excited for next version. But now get new design is taut across the top of the foot. Quality dropped off - first pair showed up with sides peeling off. Altra quickly sent a replacement. After moderate use already sides are wearing and separating. Will not buy again.

I own altras of all styles. Leather work shoes, gym, casual hiking, triathlons and trail running. I've met more people that miss the Timp 1.5 than have liked any model since. Heavy toe box pinch right at the first MTP joint. Firmer cushion than the 1.5 in my opinion. Both have same durability issues. Just a bummer I buy these to encourage a splayed toe lifestyle and now they're progressing towards every other generic brand of shoes toe box fit. How bout a wider toe box option for the OG altra fans? Maybe the voices will be heard one day instead of being forced to encourage new brands.

I have a pair of Altra Timp 2 shoes that I love, but this new model is too narrow across the lower lace area, making my feet hurt after several hours of wear. I have enjoyed Altra shoes for many years, but I cannot wear these again.

I bought this shoe because the lone peaks don't meet my needs anymore. I thought this would be a good fit for me. However the shoe runs narrow. If they would have a wide version of it his shoe it would be great.

These are incredibly comfortable trail shoes that can also be used on the road. I fell in love right away. Ran 100 miles and they started falling apart. Returned them. I hope they can fix this!

I have run in the Timp 2 for all my training runs and a 50 mile race. Love the shoe! Thought I would give the Timp 3 a try for my upcoming 100 but after 12 miles the shoe is coming apart! I have the Superior 4.0, Escalante, Timp 2, and Lone Peak Mid with hundreds of miles on them and no issues. What happened?!?! Seems like you all rushed out a product with poor testing and quality control. Emailed Altra and hopefully they will do their part in making this right.

Just cancel the 3.0s and update the Timps so they don't fall apart and delaminate. Gotta work on the quality control and durability Altra! Shouldn't be shipping shoes with these issues....

The Timp 2 was my all time favorite running shoe but the Timp 3 was a big disappointment. Too narrow, decrease in quality, and even the looks got worse.

My first Altras and I'm impressed enough to absolutely invest in more Altras! PROS: -- I got these about a month before racing a 50K (already used to 0-Low drop shoes). Broke them in beautifully after 2-3 short runs. My best review I could leave is to say that these feel like fitted slippers, mile after mile, without producing any hot spots or uncomfortable results from 'squish' I've found with other high cushion shoes and brands. -- Great fit, really comfortable, the ride just makes you feel like you can keep going! ... While they last. -- The tread pattern and material is impressive! Really, I didn't expect a lot and they have performed very well on all kinds of varied mountain terrain. That's a plus that I hope Altra applies to other shoe lines. CONS: -- There is definitely not a rock plate. Trails in most areas will be just fine but my feet started to feet beat up from the rock on jeeps roads and trails in south western Colorado (Silverton/Ourey) during a race in that area. Having run in other shoes without this being an issue, I thought I'd mention it. -- Something ultra runners might not care about: these are not fast shoes. They're amazing for the long days up and down mountains, back to back long training days, but I would not recommend them for uptempo efforts faster than race pace. -- It could be very easy to highly recommend the Timp 3 to just about anyone, for a lot of reasons. HOWEVER, for the price (at the time of purchase) I expected more life. Almost to the mile, when I hit the 150 mile mark they suddenly felt like they went flat and broke down (I'm 5'10, 150lbs, if that is of interest). They're still ok for short runs but sadly these feel like they've run their course (pun intended). -- I expected a longer life. My biggest qualm for a shoe at this price. -- If you get them on sale and aren't putting in a lot of miles per week, they would be a good shoe. If you log a lot of miles, consider one of the other awesome Altra models.

Trail runner and backpacker. Altra loyalist. Inventor of the slogan "Altra: best trail runner for indoor use." These Timp3 are a step back from the Timp 2. It is too narrow. It started too desalination on the sides right away. Bottom line is that I scoured the web and bought as many Timp 2 as possible.

I bought these after having a couple of other pairs of Altras that I liked. After a max of 5 runs and maybe 20 miles they started to delaminate. I ended up returning them for another brand. Not impressed with the quality.

It seems there is a collapse or lack of material only on left shoe, outside edge of left heel area. Have removed insole to inspect and can't tell visually where the issue is. I own another pair of Altra, different model that do not have this issue and feel great and equal from left to right shoe. It's odd as it's only one shoe that has the problem. Manufacturing defect maybe? Too late to return as I went ahead and wore them outside before realizing the issue with the left shoe.

I was so excited to buy these shoes, even thought I had never heard of Altra.. But, the "side skin" is already starting to pull away after wearing them only 15 days. I am a service advisor at a automotive dealership so I am on my feet, on concrete, all day long... If the would held up better, these woulda been my favorite shoes.. Unfortunately, these are going back to the store today.

I run a mix of single-track and crushed-lime rail-trail. I initially loved the fit and feel of the timp 3 but, the soles feel flat and the shoes are falling apart after 70 miles. Better fit than timp 2 but the durability leaves a lot to be desired.

Hiking/in town walking. These have reduced width in the toe box from the TIMP 1.5, that reduce comfort & adaptability. Slightly shorter. Big toe cut is curved inward more than TIMP 1.5, please restore.

The Timp 1.5 was the best-fitting shoe I ever put on my feet. The 2.0 and 3.0 are just too narrow in the forefoot and I can no longer wear them. Altra did something similar to the Escalante, but then they made the 2.5 wider again. I can only hope they do the same with the Timp.

Pros:
Effortless lockdown
Improved toebox fit over 2.0
Excellent grip
Firmer underfoot than 2.0
Cons:
Tongue is difficult to keep in place
Heavier than 2.0
Firmer underfoot than 2.0
Overlays delaminated in under 10 miles
The lockdown and fit is really dialed in on this new Timp. Additional toebox height is noticeable and appreciated. While the ride feels a little firmer, it's not unpleasant and might even be preferable to the slightly softer 2.0
Unfortunately, the upper's overlays began to delaminate after the first run. Less important, but still notable: the tongue requires some lacing voodoo to keep it in place.
Overall, a fine update to 2.0 is spoiled by some unpleasant surprises that make this pair, at least, a no-go.
