I have been running with one of the LP5.0 on one foot and the LP 4.5 on the other foot. I can't feel any difference in a run up to 10 miles, on trail/pavement/gravel. Maybe a strange (but effective!) way to evaluate a product, but it works. I like both shoes, maybe they are just a bit wide for my feet but easily remedied by tighter lacing. Very comfortable shoe, good traction on loose surfaces.

Agree that the laces should go down a little lower to help secure further down distal. The shoes do feel great but could work on making them lighter! Need to either make them a trail run shoe or a hike shoe not in between. I think they run 1/4 to 1/2 size big but that's ok for trail so I don't jam toes downhill. First pair of lone peaks and I'm a fan overall!

Lone Peak 5 is a good shoe, but hard to get heel lock down in, because the heel and its padding is a bit floppy. Great tread, decent cushioning, go anywhere shoe but just so that people know... Also, the toebox is wider than you think it is. So while it's True to Size for the length, some might find the box a little wide in its normal sizing. Good luck!

I am a long time Altra customer. In non-Altra shoes, I wear a 10.5 4E. With self-proclaimed duck feet, I'm a huge fan of a wider forefoot and toe box in the Lone Peak 5. I own the previous model Lone Peak as well and when I ordered them in size 11 to give my toes more room. I notice they are snug at the widest part of my foot and the base feels sloppy (my foot underpronates easily in them). I was not happy with the fit and rarely wore the shoes. Once I found the new Lone Peak was available in a wide, I gave it a try. The new Lone Peak in Wide is 3E/4E (according to Customer Service) in width. My take is it's closer to 3E, but still very comfortable on my feet. The base seems much more stable as a result of the wider width as well. These shoes are touted as neutral. I tend to underpronate, but stay pretty centered in these. Again, I think this is a result of the wider base. I recommend these if you felt (like I did) that Altras were getting narrower throughout the last few years and need a little more width. And I highly recommend Altra expanding this to other products and don't be afraid to cheat them closer to 4E!

Having a wide forefoot which is made even wider by bunions made me eager to try the "wide" version. In my first attempt the shoe I received was overall too large even though the marked size was at the lower end of what fits my in Altras. The second attempt was the correct length, and felt very comfortable for casual wear. But on steep trails, especially with sideslope, my feet slid around inside the shoes. No amount of lace-tightening made them feel secure. Overall these "wide" version shoes, like those of most manufacturers, are not so much wide as ultra high volume. Unless your foot has enough volume to fill the available space the fit is sloppy everywhere -- heel, midfoot and forefoot. The King Mountain has worked extremely well for me, and I plan to continue using this model so long as the fit doesn't change.

I needed a shoe with room to wiggle my toes and help with my Morton's neuropathy. Alta shoes fit the bill. No squeezing no punching. Could use more in the cushion department, feels like walking on a board after a while. With the shoe running a little larger than normal, probably due to extra wide toe box, I added an extra soft footpad and have never looked back. Since this is my first experience with Altra, I stuck with a basic shoe and have been pleased. I am ready to try another shoe style, maybe something more casual or business casual for work.

I was glad to find out that the dimensions of the Lone Peak 5.0 WIDE are exactly the same than those of my beloved Lone Peak 4.0 (see picture below). I was initially concerned that the new Ego midsole would be as bouncy as that used in the Escalante, but Altra's engineers did a great job regarding the integration of this road-oriented technology in their flagship trail runners. As in the previous version, the Maxtrac outsole provides great traction on all types of trail. In my opinion they don't deserve 5/5 stars for 3 reasons: 1) The sole is still too rigid and the shoes are too heavy. Even though I understand that they are not minimalist shoes, greater flexibility and lightness would be appreciated. 2) The wide version comes in a single color (lime/blue), which is by far the ugliest color combination I have ever seen. 3) The Lone Peak 5.0 are manufactured in Vietnam. This is still better than the Lone Peak 4.0 that used to be manufactured in China, yet I wouldn't mind paying them 30 additional dollars if they were to be made in the USA (and I speak as a EU citizen). Outlook: As a wide-footed guy, I would love if all Altra's would come in both regular and wide sizes!

I have been using the Lone Peak shoes for several years and have highly recommended them for trail running and backpacking. No more foot or joint pain with these shoes. My only complaint is the soles do not provide good traction on wet rock (with a bit of moss or other slippery growth) and as I live in the Pacific Northwest, I encounter these surfaces regularly. Traction is great otherwise. Hoping next version will have soles made of rubber that is better on these surfaces.

I have worn 12 5 for years. Ordered Wide Lone Peak 12.5. Surprise, they are too big. So I was able to order 12.0 in wide. Good fit. I now am able to a shoe that fits my foot. Thanks.

Bought these for an up coming Grand Canyon rim to rim hike. Straight out of shoebox the fit & finish of these babys is spot on. 5 or 6 runs / hikes out at White Tanks proves an extremely comfortable experience ,top notch. The outsole bit that wraps up at the front of the shoe is now stiched in however , that stich came loose a little. To stay ahead out that issue I pulled it tight from the inside then smeared some shoe goo over the toe. Great version of the lone peak !

For starters I'm 6'3" and 220 lbs with a size 15. Been running in Paradigm 4.5 and need a wide toe box and zero drop for neuromas in my forefoot, along with all that cushion to carry my size. I am sold on Altra so I picked up these to try hiking because my go-to hiking boots are about worn out and I wanted to give trail runners a whirl for long hikes. Got these yesterday, opened the box like a kid on Christmas morning and was immediately impressed with the new Lone Peak. Very nice looking shoe and appeared to be well built, not worried about durability. I laced 'em up and went on a 4 mile walk around the 'hood. I knew immediately that the cushioning wasn't going to be substantial enough for me to run in them. I'm used to that because I'm a big guy. So I didn't want to judge them based on this walk. The whole shoe was super comfy otherwise. Today, I took them on a 4 mile hike with a lot of rocks and elevation changes. Man I wanted so bad to love these shoes. Awesome traction, comfy upper, laces that stay tied, and obviously the zero drop wide toebox Altra is known for. Just not quite enough cushion for me. I could definitely make these work but I have no doubt they'd break down on me pretty quickly. Hey Altra, can I get the Lone Peak 5 with more cushion and a Guide Rail like my Paradigms? In summary, this is definitely a top notch shoe but just not for those of us giant footed larger dudes who need a nice pillow under foot to stop earth shaking sasquatch footsteps. Maybe I need to try the Timp or Olympus.

I'm coming back to the Lone Peak (my original Altras were the Lone Peak 2.0s) after a few years of tending toward either Superiors or Timps. I have to admit, that these definitely feel heavier that those other two options even while still in the box, and I do think the weight is noticeable in my runs. That being said, these are the first shoes I've put on in a while that felt like they had plenty of room in every spot I could wish for, and they were comfortable from the first strides. The uppers give the impression of being more durable than the recent Timps, which developed a hole in the upper at the arch before I had worn down the midsole. Also, the outsole feels more grippy to the touch, so I'm hoping for a good surprise when I'm off of snow and onto rainy rocks and roots. These new Lone Peaks aren't nimble enough for me to say there somewhere close to the perfect shoes, but I think I will end up liking them quite a bit.

I'm a huge altra fan. Own escalate racers, cayd's, and Torin 5 leather. All shoes I'm happy with. This shoe fell short on mid foot width. I purchased the lime with M width. I'm 6'2 and require a size 14. I'm an overpronator and the midfoot section cut into my foot. making them too narrow overall. The toe box was fine for me. Wide Width wasn't available, if it were I would've done an exchange for the wide width instead of a return. Bring more wide widths of your shoe inventory and watch how many of us buy them up.

Felt great when I first got them. Still feel really comfortable, however the soles are wearing out prematurely. I owned 2 pair of the Lone Peak 4 and each lasted me 6 months. These showed pretty significant wear on the soles after 3. The uppers are holding up great. Look practically new. I don’t know what changed in the material in the sole but if Altra made these with a Vibram sole they would be the unicorn of trail runners.

I really love the wide toe box and overall the shoe is so comfortable to wear. I just cannot do the zero drop. I am a supinator with high arches and these have caused back and nerve pain while walking. I’m so bummed bc if they didn’t have a zero drop I think they’d work great for me.

I am thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. I stockpiled the Lone Peak 3.5s prior to my start since they were replaced by the 4.0 and 4.5s which did not fit me as well. Unfortunately, my feet grew more than I expected and the 3.5s were no longer available on the aftermarket in the size I needed. Therefore, I was forced to try to 5.0. I have been pleasantly surprised with the fit and all aspects of the shoe except for the durability of the fabric used in the uppers. I put 600 miles on the 3.5s and after washing, the uppers still looked brand new. On the 5.0's, the upper fabric was severely abraded by 100 miles and was totally blown out on the sides at 150 miles. The warranty replacement is about to blow out at 200 miles. Please go back to using the bomb-proof fabric that you used in the earlier models and you will have a great shoe.

I have LP3 shoes for a few years. Great shoe. I just bought the new LP5. Shoe looks good and fits well. However, first time out I was on wet tile pavement and it was like on ice. Zero traction.

I just finished a section of the John Muir Trail, Mammoth to Whitney Portal, 177 miles. I wore the Lone Peak 3s last year on an 80 mile section of the JMT and was satisfied with their performance. This year I tried the Lone Peak 5s. I wore a size 12 in the 3s but the 12 in the 5's were huge! almost 2" of space between my toe and the front of the shoe. I sized down to 11.5 which still left over 1" of space and the width was ok, but not like the 3s. During my hike I noticed that despite using the "runner's loop" to lock my heel in place my foot was still sliding all over the place in the shoe. The shoe offers no stability. This caused my foot to shift alot on down hills and eventually caused my foot to jam into the front of the shoe despite the ample room. I also got a blister for the first time on top of my fourth left toe. I never get blisters. I did use SOL insoles in my shoes which I have used in all my shoes for the pass 6 years. The insoles definitely helped but could not over come the shoe's issues. The shoes is not as stabile as the 3. Durability. Well the shoes defiantly took a beating. The color peeled off of the toecap, the stitching came out of the sole on the toe cap and the shoes EGO foam lost it's spring. The heel cups on both shoes wore through which was surprising. Laces held up great and it did vent water fast. The soles still have tread but I wouldn't start another long distance hike in these shoes. They're done after 15 days and 180 miles. I did see many other hikers with this shoe, the yellow is unique. Well done on the marketing! Bottom line I would not hike in these again. Not long distance and not with a pack over 20lbs. They are probably great for trail running and "ultra light" back packing but for the JMT I wouldn't recommend them. Height 5'10" Weight 200lbs. Pack weight 25lbs. base, 30-35lbs. with bearcan, food and water.

I've had the lone peaks since the 4's and they haven't gotten any better since in fact they've gotten worse, rubber doesn't seem to hold up and they've gotten sloppier/looser where you need it to hold your feet. I still have a pair of fours that I still like to wear because they're more comfortable but I can't use them for any serious trail runs anymore because of the loss of grip. I got the 4.5's and they wore down quickly and had some separation. Got the 5's shortly after and the outer sole wore out, no kidding, In 2 months. Like flat. Not a nub.. but legit flat. Soooo I got the Olympus as warranty replacements hoping the vibram rubber would be better see my review on that shoe

I have issues with my achilles. Shoes, for some reason, always have a high back which serves literally no purpose to the fit of the shoe, but it digs into my achilles anytime I'm running downhill. Bought these after trying them on in the store and loving how supple the back of the heel of the shoe was. Figured there was no way these would cause achilles pain. I was wrong. I'm not sure how they managed to pull it off, but the back of the shoe digs into my achilles as bad as any other brand. I'm sure it's just my weird food anatomy, but I honestly don't understand the reason for putting a high back on a running shoe, especially one where you're going to be wearing to run downhill. It doesn't help secure your foot and just puts extra material against a fairly vulnerable part of your foot. Absolutely fantastic shoe otherwise and I'll likely take a knife to the back of the shoe to make them usable.

I'll start by saying that I'm a pretty enthusiastic Altra fan. I love the shoes this company puts out more often than not, and I've had dozens of pairs over the past few years. And I like the LP5, too. I just don't think it's a trail running shoe. The EGO midsole is extremely comfortable and bouncy, and it's great to see this foam implemented in an offroad shoe. The outsole is super grippy and doesn't hold mud when conditions take a turn for the worse. Overall the ride of the shoe is very good, however it fits maybe a half size too big for me. I normally never size down except in shoes like the Escalante 2.5, where the knit upper requires a bit more of a restrictive fit. My biggest issue with the LP5 as a trail running shoe is the upper. It's simply too sloppy to inspire confidence on anything but the most buffed out trails. In fact, the upper feels like a total afterthought in terms of how it's designed to fit the foot. I can tell a ton of consideration went into the LP5 from the insole down, but what sits on top of that is a loose, poorly fitting mess. I think it's a tremendous shoe for hiking, and the popularity of the LP5 with the thru hiker community is probably what drove the development of this latest version. Because this right here folks is straight up not a trail running shoe.

I liked the fit and comfort - worked well for my feet. I did a very gentle 10 miles and before the end threads were coming out of the toes. I've seen a couple of other reviews with this issue as well. I can't foresee doing a real hike if the shoes fall apart at the first sign of a trail. I'm disappointed because I had been very eager to start a long-term relationship with these shoes.
