I gave this base layer a good trial today. Walked approx. 5-6 miles in 30- 40 degree F weather. I had a Smartwool medium weight sweater on top of this base layer, and a light jacket over the two. As you can see by the pictures, the base layer collected and held quite a bit of perspiration. I was not running, only briskly walking on the trail which is for the most part flat. I like the fit and feel of this, but am a little disappointed by the dampness that it retained. Had I stopped for any length of time, perhaps a chill would have set in. It really would not be a good choice for vigorous workout, only an activity that is more sedentary. It is a nice underlayer for casual wear.

I bought this crew 250 base layer to primarily wear on a March snowboarding trip to Vail, but also to serve on early summer hiking trips, as well as to wear around the house on cold days.
The base layer worked well across a wide range of temps while I was at Vail. On +5F cold temps paired with a mid layer zip up and snowboarding jacket and +55F warm temps paired with a light softshell, this base layer performed spectacularly. Breathed well, managed sweat well on heavy output runs, and left a 5 day trip (worn every day) completely stink free.
Another big plus is that it looks acceptable enough on surprise video calls (you know, when your boss randomly says "Hey can you chat real quick?" and you have to follow-suit and turn on your camera?...) during WFH. Can't wait to put it through it's paces further on the trail and mountains this spring and fall.
The only slight complaint that I have it is just slightly oversized in the sleeves and general fit (for a base layer). Not too big of a deal, but the wool fabric gets stretched out a little bit after the first wear too, however I have read that it bounces back after the rare wash.

Our son recommended this top to go with the bottoms. The fit is perfect (my usual size) and the quality is the best!

I bought these for upcoming trips to Europe in winter and late spring, though ive tried them out already. Perfect fit, can wear under a dress shirt if I need to, and they pack well. 2 to 3 weeks carry-on only, and I can air them out overnight or wash them in a hotel sink if needed.

I use it as a base layer at work when it's chilly. It wears well. If it gets warm I don't get hot. Helps with the windchill. Usually operate in the 50s with some wind in the SF Bay Area which has alot of micro-climates with wide varying temperatures.

This shirt is soft, not at all itchy and wonderfully warm for our cold climate and inability to stay warm in our advancing age.

I've been wearing the classis wool base layers for several years because they keep me warm in the cold MN winters. The reasons I've been sticking with them is that they are the most comfortable and warm and the fact that they are 100% merino wool. I wear them for skiing, walking the dogs, hiking, and basically any activity outdoors in the winter. I own multiple pairs of tops and bottoms and wear them every day during the winter.

Base layer while golfing in 40-50F weather. Kept me warm in the morning chill. And wicked away the sweat when it warmed up a bit. Awesome piece. Want a bunch more.

Although listed as a base layer I wear this as outerwear (sweater). This is my second of this series and the quality is identical but I think the fit is a bit smaller than my previous sweater.

I'm a skier. I've tried base layers from other brands. Smartwool is the softest and most durable I've ever used and looks great.

Smartwool makes the best fitting & durable base layers I own. Wash after wash they never change. It's all I wear now in 150 wt as my everyday base layer or undershirt.

The Smartwool Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew is an outstanding addition to any outdoor enthusiast's wardrobe. From the moment I put it on, I was impressed by the softness of the merino wool, which feels luxurious against the skin. This base layer does an excellent job of regulating temperature, keeping me warm during cold weather while also wicking away moisture when I get active.
One of the standout features is its breathability; I've worn it during long hikes and never felt overheated. The fit is greatit's snug but allows for ease of movement, making it perfect for layering under other clothing. I also appreciate the durability of the material; it holds up well after multiple washes without losing its shape or softness.
Overall, I highly recommend the Smartwool Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable base layer for winter activities or everyday wear. It truly combines comfort, functionality, and style!
